Former Georgia swimmer Coole dies
Lisa Ann Coole, former Georgia swimmer and 1997 NCAA Woman of the Year, died in a car accident May 16 in Champaign, Illinois. She was 23.
In four years at Georgia, Coole was a two-time NCAA champion. She won the 100-yard butterfly in 1996 and was a member of Georgia's champion 200-yard freestyle relay team in 1995. Additionally, Coole was a 26-time all-American and a 10-time Southeastern Conference champion. She also captured gold, silver and bronze medals in the 1995 World University Games.
Academically, Coole garnered recognition as an GTE Academic All-American in 1997. Twice she was an all-College Swimming Coaches Association of America academic selection.
Coole served as secretary and vice-president of the Student Athletic Council at Georgia and was a two-time National Student-Athlete Day volunteer. She also participated in a mentoring program and volunteered at a homeless shelter for three years.
Coole earned a degree in biology from Georgia in 1997 and had completed her first year in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Illinois.
At the time of the accident, she was on her way to adopt a greyhound. Investigators speculated she may have been blinded by the sun and unable to see the garbage truck that struck her car.
