Music City Bowl is one of 22 approved by subcommittee
The Music City Bowl to be played December 29 in Nashville, Tennessee, is the only new bowl recommended for certification for 1998-99 by the NCAA Football Certification Subcommittee.
The subcommittee also recommended recertification of 21 other bowls at its April 28-May 1 meeting in Tampa, Florida, including a double-header in the Jeep Aloha Christmas Football Classics on Christmas Day.
In addition to the Jeep Aloha and Music City bowls, the 1998-99 certified bowls include: Axa/Equitable Liberty Bowl, Builders Square Alamo Bowl, Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl, CompUSA Florida Citrus Bowl, FedEx Orange Bowl, Holiday Bowl, Humanitarian Bowl, Insight.Com Bowl, Las Vegas Bowl, Motor City Bowl, Nokia Sugar Bowl, Norwest Sun Bowl, Outback Bowl, Rose Bowl, Samford Independence Bowl, Southwestern Bell Cotton Bowl Classic, Sunshine Football Classic Bowl, Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, and the Toyota Gator Bowl.
Also certified is the McDonald's Heritage Bowl for Division I-AA teams. That game will be played December 26 in Atlanta.
NCAA member institutions cannot participate in postseason football competitions that are not certified. The certification process ensures that bowls meet specific standards in terms of officiating, insurance, distribution of funds and other aspects of the event.
In other action, the subcommittee certified the Eddie Robinson Football Classic as an exempted preseason football game to be played in August 1998.
The subcommittee also held its first discussion regarding gambling issues and agreed that a review of that subject would be a priority during future meetings.
