Cormier, Franklin appointed to Division II Presidents Council
Patricia P. Cormier of Longwood College and Bernard W. Franklin of St. Augustine's College have been appointed to the NCAA Division II Presidents Council.
Cormier and Franklin will fill interim vacancies created by the resignations from the Council of Adam W. Herbert of the University of North Florida and Anthony F. Ceddia of Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.
Cormier
Cormier has served as president of Longwood College since 1996. She has been involved in higher education for many years and has served in leadership positions on the American Council on Education (ACE) Fellows Board and the American Association of Higher Education.
Cormier served three years as chief academic officer at Winthrop University beginning in 1993. Before that, she spent 12 years at the University of Pennsylvania, where she concluded her tenure as an associate professor and associate dean of academic affairs. She also served as vice-president and dean of the college at Wilson College from 1984-88. She was named vice-president for development and alumni relations at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1989. Her honors include selection as one of 30 fellows nationwide to participate in the ACE fellowship program in academic administration in 1982-83 and selection as a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.
She has published two highly regarded books in her field: "Community Oral Health: A Systems Approach" and "Educating the Dentists of the Future."
Cormier has her master's and doctorate degrees in education from the University of Virginia. She also has a bachelor's degree from Boston University.
Franklin
Franklin is the ninth president of St. Augustine's, having assumed his duties in 1995. He previously served as president of Livingstone College and Hood Theological Seminary.
Franklin earned his doctor of education degree from Columbia University, with an emphasis on student personnel. His master's is from Western Maryland College and his bachelor's degree was earned at Simpson College.
In 1988, Franklin was selected as an ACE Fellow, enabling him to participate in an executive internship at Virginia Union University. He also served as a graduate faculty member at Miami University (Ohio), as vice-president for student affairs at Virginia Union; and as assistant vice-president for student affairs at Johnson C. Smith University.
Franklin serves on the boards of many civic and educational organizations.
