Division I Women's Golf

Sun Devils, Wildcats vie for trophy

Event: 1998 Division I Women's Golf Championships.

Overview: The Division I women's golf title has resided in the state of Arizona the last five years, and this year doesn't look to be much different. Defending champion Arizona State has won the title four of the last five years and is led by senior Kellee Booth, who finished fourth at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships and was named to the all-conference team along with freshman Grace Park. Park tied for fifth at the Pac-10 championships. Arch-rival Arizona, however, looks like the team to beat after successfully defending its Pac-10 title. The Wildcats defeated the Sun Devils by 16 strokes and third-place Southern California by 34. All five Arizona golfers finished among the top 11. Sophomore Jenna Daniels won the individual title as she held off teammates Krisse Register and Heather Graff. 1996 national medalist Marisa Baena finished tied for seventh and sophomore Jill Gomric tied for 11th. Daniels, Register and Baena were named to the all-conference team .... Other contenders include Georgia, Tulsa, Duke and host Stanford.

Field: A total of 204 golfers representing five districts will participate in two regionals to determine the championships field of 99 competitors.

Dates and sites: The East and West regionals will be held May 7-9 and hosted by Duke and Stanford, respectively. Wisconsin will host the championships finals May 20-23 at the University Ridge Golf Course.
