Division I Men's Golf

UNLV, Texas Christian seek first title

Event: 1998 Division I Men's Golf Championships.

Overview: Repeat is not a familiar word in this event. The last time a team won back-to-back titles was Houston in 1984-85, and the three highest ranked teams this season are looking for their first title. Going into the Western Athletic Conference Championships last month, UNLV and Texas Christian were ranked No. 1 and No. 2, and Texas Christian took the title from the Rebels in the final round. UNLV has finished among the top three in 10 of 13 tournaments this season. Senior Bill Lunde hopes to lead his team to the title after a second-place conference tournament finish. Senior J. J. Henry of Texas Christian, who won the WAC individual title with a hole-in-one on the 17th hole and a birdie on the 18th, was named WAC player of the year .... Charles Warren of Clemson, who won last year's individual championship in sudden death, will help the third-ranked Tigers seek a first title. Warren won his second straight Atlantic Coast Conference crown last month. Clemson won the ACC team title at 28 under par .... Other contenders for the national title include Oklahoma State, Arizona and Georgia Tech.
