UCLA soccer assistant reprimanded for verbal abuse toward an official
The Division I Men's Soccer Committee has reprimanded David Vanole, University of California, Los Angeles, assistant men's soccer coach, for inappropriate behavior toward a game official during the 1997 Division I Men's Soccer Championship.
Specifically, Vanole verbally abused an official, using profanity during the semifinal and championship games. The Division I committee has issued a public reprimand of Vanole and has withheld transportation and per diem payment to UCLA for Vanole's participation in Richmond, Virginia.
"The committee was disappointed in Mr. Vanole's behavior and strongly believes that the championship should not be tarnished by such behavior. Our coaches have a responsibility to conduct themselves appropriately at all times," said Jonathan B. LeCrone, chair of the committee. "We want to emphasize that this behavior has no place in NCAA championships competition."
