Division III Men's Tennis

Trinity (Connecticut) hopes to net its first Division III men's tennis title

Event: 1998 Division III Men's Tennis Championships.

Overview: Trinity (Connecticut) will be looking for its first NCAA championship title. Leading the way for the Bantams will be sophomore Artem Gonopolsky, who is 17-1 in the combined fall and spring seasons .... Denison will be searching for a team championship with help from Lee Hays, Jeremy Edesess, Brandon Ott and Vivek Krishna in singles and Ott and John Ginther in doubles .... Kalamazoo was ranked third in the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. Doubles teams of Dan Harding and Mike Ivy, and Ryan Cummings and Steve Nasson will challenge for an unprecedented eighth team championship. Kalamazoo also figures to receive strong singles play from Nasson, Harding, Zach Tann, Ryan Shockley and freshman Andrew Minelli .... Gustavus Adolphus will contend behind top-ranked Todd Bowlby, who has been one of the top five players in Division III for the past four years. No. 2 singles player Ryan Dussalt pairs with Bowlby for a formidable doubles tandem .... Emory hopes to enter the postseason unblemished, sporting a 14-0 record against Division III competition. Senior Jed Weinstein is highly ranked in the South region. Weinstein has championships experience, previously earning all-America honors in doubles as a sophomore and in singles last year as a junior. Weinstein will be aided by teammates Conor Civins, Sam Gompers and Mark Saldutti .... Swarthmore also will take aim at the title behind the sophomore doubles team of John Leary and Jon Temin, who placed sixth at the Rolex tournament last fall.

Field: Teams will play a single-elimination tournament with the round of 16 and quarterfinals played at four regional sites. Each team regional champion will advance to the semifinal round. The individual championships will include 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams in three days of competition.

Dates and sites: Regional tournaments will be May 8-10 at four sites. The championships will be May 15-20 at Williams. The team championship will be May 16-17; single and doubles championships will be May 18-20.
