UNLV taps Miller as head basketball coach
UNLV has named Regina Miller as head women's basketball coach, succeeding LaDonna McClain, who stepped down February 2.
Miller joins UNLV from Western Illinois, where she has served as head coach for six seasons. In addition to netting regular season and postseason conference championships in 1995, she also was recognized as the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association's coach of the year. Before her stint at Western Illinois, Miller was an assistant coach at Old Dominion for five years after working at Arizona from 1986 to 1987. At the international level, Miller served as an assistant coach with USA Basketball in 1997, where she assisted the United States squad to a silver medal in the World Championship Qualifying Tournament in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Collegiately, Miller earned all-America honors at Louisburg (North Carolina) Junior College before transferring to Old Dominion, where she played for two years. She also has competed on a professional level with the Virginia Waves in 1984. Miller holds a bachelor's degree in recreation from Old Dominion and a master's degree from Western Kentucky, also in recreation.

Ronald E. Carrier, president at James Madison, announced plans to retire, effective no later than December 31 ... Howard vice-president for student affairs Steve A. Favors selected as president at Grambling State ... Michael R. Ferrari named chancellor at Texas Christian, effective July 1. Ferrari has been president at Drake ... John Hilpert promoted to president at Northern State after serving as interim president at the school.
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Georgene Brock, director of women's athletics at Mankato State, announced retirement plans, effective June 30. Brock, who has been member of the Mankato State staff since 1964, has served as women's volleyball coach, tennis coach and instructor in the physical education department during her tenure at the school ... Seton Hall named Jeff Fogelson athletics director. Fogelson has been athletics director at Xavier for the past 15 years and replaces Sue Regan, who served in the interim and will retain responsibilities in the athletics department. Xavier selected Mike Hermann, associate athletics director for marketing, as acting athletics director.
ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Michigan senior associate athletics director Bob De Carolis tapped as associate athletics director for internal operations at Oregon State. De Carolis has been with Michigan for 19 years.
ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Sid Sink appointed assistant athletics director for compliance and certification at Bowling Green, succeeding Tom Glick, who retired. Sink will relinquish his duties as coordinator of the running programs and head coach of the men's track and field and cross country squads ... Stonehill hired Jim Seavey as assistant director of athletics for media relations. Seavey has been director of athletics media relations at Massachusetts-Lowell for three years. Seavey replaces Bob Richards, who is retiring after 21 years.
COACHES
Baseball--Columbia's Paul Fernandes announced plans to retire after a 21-year stint as head coach. Fernandes will continue to serve as the school's associate director of athletics and remain a member of the NCAA Baseball Committee.
Men's basketball--Rob Evans, head coach at Mississippi since 1992, named head coach at Arizona State. Evans succeeds Bill Frider, who resigned before last season, and Don Newman, an assistant who served as interim coach ... Providence tapped Tim Welsh as head coach to succeed Pete Gillen, who took the head coaching post at Virginia. Welsh has been head coach at Iona for the past three years. Iona named assistant coach Jeff Ruland as Welsh's successor ... Tim O'Toole selected as head coach at Fairfield. O'Toole succeeds Paul Cormier, who assumed associate director of athletics responsibilities at the school ... Iowa head coach Tom Davis will resign after next season. In 12 seasons at the helm, Davis has compiled a 249-130 mark ... Tom Penders resigned after 10 years as head coach at Texas. Penders closed his tenure as the most victorious coach in school history with a record of 208-110 ... Jacksonville State appointed Mark Turgeon head coach. Turgeon, an assistant for the National Basketball Association's Philadelphia 76ers, replaces Bill Jones, who stepped down after 24 seasons ... Duquesne released Scott Edgar, head coach for the past three years ... Arkansas State extended the contract of head coach Dickey Nutt through the 2000 season ... Florida extended the contract of head coach Billy Donovan through the 2003 season ... Gregg Marshall, named as head coach at Winthrop. Marshall has been an assistant coach at Marshall for the past two years.
Men's basketball assistants--Alabama appointed Tom Kelsey and Robert Scott as assistant coaches ... Monmouth tapped Mark Calzonetti as assistant coach.
Women's basketball--Southern Illinois head coach Cindy Scott, resigned after 21 years to pursue opportunities in athletics administration. Scott built a 388-215 career record and netted three Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference titles and four NCAA tournament appearances ... Kathy McCaskill-Rhein released as head coach at College of Charleston (South Carolina).
Football--Peter Alvanos selected as head coach at Swarthmore. Alvanos has been defensive coordinator and responsible for defense, special teams and recruiting at Chicago for the past four years ... Southern Oregon extended the contract of head coach Jeff Olson through the 1999-2000 school year.
Football assistants--Roger Van De Zande appointed defensive coordinator at Southern Oregon, succeeding Jeff Weiss, who resigned. Also, Matt Sayre selected as offensive coordinator ... Iona named Denis Fahey running backs and special-teams coach, Bart Grachan offensive line coach, Ron Melnick linebackers coach, John Norton defensive coordinator and secondary coach, Roy Rodriguez defensive line and special-teams coach, and James Simmons receivers coach ... Redlands announced the resignation of assistant coach Keith Gissel, effective May 31. Gissel has been on staff since April 1996 ... Harvard named David Dunn defensive line coach. Dunn, who served as assistant defensive line coach in 1997, succeeds Hank Hughes, who assumed an assistant coaching position with Memphis State ... Jersey City State appointed Chuck Murphy defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach, Tom Mendez offensive line coach, Reggie Beard receivers coach and John Lindley video coordinator ... Fordham selected Rich Nagy as defensive coordinator, John Marzka as offensive coordinator and Dean Paul as wide receivers coach ... Tom Throckmorton tapped as defensive coordinator at William and Mary. Throckmorton most recently served as linebackers coach at Richmond.
Golf--Rice tapped Greg Martin as coach.
Women's gymnastics--Terry Casperson promoted to head coach at Western Michigan. Casperson had been interim coach.
Men's ice hockey assistant--Kevin Matson added as men's assistant coach.
Women's ice hockey--Williams named Amy Carlson head coach. Carlson, who also will serve as assistant softball coach and teach in the physical education department, most recently worked as assistant coach of women's ice hockey, softball, and soccer at Middlebury.
Women's crew and rowing--Robyn Horner selected as head coach of women's crew and physical education instructor at Williams. Last year, Horner was interim crew coach at the school.
Men's soccer--Loyola Marymount added Paul Krumpe as head coach. Krumpe, a former U.S. National Team player from 1986-1991, has been assistant coach at UCLA for the past three years.
Women's soccer--Julie Zovistoski hired as head coach at Jersey City State after working as an assistant coach at Kean for the past two seasons. Zovistoski succeeds Scott Baker, who resigned.
Men's and women's swimming--Towson announced the retirement of head coach of men's and women's swimming Ray Riordon. Riordon, who coached the men's squad for 30 years and the women's team for nine, will retain responsibilities as an associate professor in the department of kinesiology ... Pablo Morales named head women's swimming coach at San Jose State to replace Eric Steidinger. Morales, a three-time Olympic gold medalist and captain of the 1992 U.S. Olympic men's swimming team, most recently served as assistant coach with the Stanford men's swimming team ... Scott Teeters accepted the position of women's swimming coach at Oakland.
Men's tennis--Thiel announced plans to reinstate men's tennis next spring and tapped Rich Marshall as head coach.
Women's tennis--Julie Greenwood appointed head coach of tennis and squash at Williams. Greenwood, who served as interim tennis and squash coach this year, succeeds Erin Robson ... North Carolina women's head coach Kitty Harrison announced plans to retire at the end of the school year.
Men's and women's track and field assistant--Michael Bartolina selected as assistant men's and women's track and cross country coach at Texas-Pan American.
Women's volleyball--Lori Duncan hired as head women's volleyball coach at Eastern Kentucky. Duncan also has coached at Indiana (Pennsylvania) and Pennsylvania State University at McKeesport.
STAFF
Director of marketing and promotions--Oregon State tapped Summer Wright as department of athletics marketing and promotions director. She had served in an interim capacity since September.
Strength and conditioning coach--Bruce Seidman hired as strength and conditioning coach at Idaho State. Seidman has been assistant strength and conditioning coach at Brigham Young since 1996.
Assistant strength and conditioning coach--Notre Dame named Aaron Hillmann as assistant strength and conditioning coach for football.
NATIONAL OFFICE
Jack Copeland, senior managing editor of The NCAA News, resigned, effective May 1. Gary Brown, NCAA assistant director of publishing, will succeed Copeland as managing editor.
Membership services representative Stacey Karpinski resigned. Karpinski has been with the NCAA since January of 1996.
CORRECTION
The position from which New Orleans' Bill Gleason resigned was incorrectly listed in The Record section of April 13 edition of The NCAA News. Gleason was assistant basketball coach.
NOTABLES
Margie Wright, head softball coach at Fresno State, was selected as head coach for the USA Softball World Team scheduled to compete in the 1998 ISF World Championships in Fujinomiya City, Japan, and the Coca-Cola USA Softball American Challenge Series in the summer. Central Michigan head coach Margo Jonker and Washington's Teresa Wilson were named as assistant coaches.
Clemson senior golfer Charles Warren netted the 1998 Dave Williams Award.
Kellee Booth, a senior golfer at Arizona State, was selected as winner of the Marilynn Smith Award.
Bill Walker, assistant athletics director and head athletic trainer at Cincinnati, was tapped as an inductee into the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame. Walker has been head athletic trainer at the school for 21 years and is an instructor in the college of education.
Chamique Holdsclaw, Tennessee basketball player, and Misty Hyman, member of the Stanford women's swimming team, were named Honda Award winners as the top women collegiate athletes in their sports for 1997-98. Also a Honda Award honoree last year, Holdsclaw became the first female Tennessee basketball player to reach the 2,000-point and 1,000 rebound career marks. Hyman collected NCAA championships in the 200-meter breaststroke, 100- and 200-meter butterfly and the 200- and 400-meter medley relays. She garnered seven all-American honors.
Rod Dedeaux, former head coach at Southern California, was named NCAA Division I Coach of the Century by Collegiate Baseball Magazine. Dedeaux, who coached his teams to 11 NCAA titles and 28 Pac-10 championships in 45 years, compiled a record of 1,332-571-11. Dedeaux continues to serve as director of baseball at the school.
Brad Elder of Texas and Jenny Chuasiriporn of Duke were tapped as Rolex College Golfers of the Month for March. Elder garnered 1997 Jack Nicklaus College Player of the Year honors and Chuasiriporn also collected Rolex College Golfer of the Month recognition this past September.
North Carolina's Antawn Jamison named recipient of the 22nd annual John R. Wooden Award. He also netted The Associated Press College Player of the Year Award. Jamison, Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, was the first North Carolina player to average more than 20 points and 10 rebounds since the 1964-65 season.
Winners of the NCAA/AT&T Long Distance Awards for the 1997-98 college basketball season are: Three-point field goals per game -- Division I men, Curtis Staples, Virginia, 4.3; Division II men, Antonio Harris, LeMoyne-Owen, 4.6; Division III men, Jeff Clement, Grinnell, 8.5; Division I women, Julie Krommenhoek, Utah, 3.6. Three-point field goal percentage: Division I men, Jim Cantamessa, Siena, 56.4; Division II men, Todd Woelfle, Oakland City, 53.7; Division III men, Pat Maloney, Catholic, 51.8; Division I women, Sarah Lenschow, Valparaiso, 52.8.
