Johnson selected as head basketball coach
San Jose State tapped Phil Johnson as head men's basketball coach. Johnson succeeds Stan Morrison, who resigned after a nine-year stint as head coach. Johnson comes to San Jose State from Arizona, where he has served as an assistant coach for the past five years.
In two seasons as head coach at Northern Oklahoma from 1986 to 1987, Johnson piloted the team to its first winning season in seven years. As head coach at Seminole Junior College from 1988 to 1990, Johnson led squads to a conference championship and an Oklahoma state junior college championship. Additionally, Johnson has worked as an associate head coach at New Orleans and an assistant coach at Tulsa and at his alma mater, East Central.
As a two-year starter at East Central, he served as team cocaptain one season.
Johnson holds both a bachelor's and a master's degree in education.

Fairfield head basketball coach Paul Cormier resigned from coaching to become associate athletics director at the school ... Edinboro named Todd V. Jay associate athletics director. Jay, who has worked at the school since 1985, most recently served as coordinator of articulation and community recruitment, and he serves on various university, Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and NCAA committees.

Paul Helgren accepted the position of assistant athletics director for media relations at Toledo.

Men's basketball--South Carolina-Aiken promoted Mike Roberts to head men's basketball coach. After five years as an assistant, Roberts assumed interim head coaching duties with the resignation of Larry Epperly after the 1996-97 season ... Jim Dafler tapped as head coach at Westminster (Pennsylvania), succeeding Ron Galbreath, who stepped down after 25 years. Dafler has been an assistant coach at the school for the past nine seasons ... Widener appointed David Duda as head coach. Duda joins the staff from Delaware Valley, where he served as head coach for two years ... Earlham announced the resignation of Tony Gary. Gary closes a six-year tenure with a 26-121 mark ... Auburn extended the contract of head coach Cliff Ellis three years until 2003 ... Brian Ellerbe promoted to head coach at Michigan. Ellerbe, who had been interim head coach, succeeded Steve Fisher, who was released ... Dennis Felton appointed head coach at Western Kentucky. Felton, associate head coach at Clemson for the past four seasons, replaces Matt Kilcullen, who was released ... Louisville head coach Denny Crum signed a four-year contract extension through the 2001-02 season. Crum is one of three active coaches in the Basketball Hall of Fame and has compiled a 625-253 record in 27 seasons at the school ... Fairfield head basketball coach Paul Cormier resigned from coaching to become associate athletics director at the school. In seven years as head coach, Cormier amassed an 86-111 record.
Women's basketball--Illinois-Chicago head coach Eileen McMahon resigned. McMahon amassed an 89-135 mark in eight years to become the most-victorious coach in school history ... Chattanooga announced the resignation of Craig Parrott, effective June 30 ... Gene White tapped as head coach at his alma mater, Franklin. White, who previously coached at the school from 1987 to 1994, succeeds Lisa Mahan ... Long Island-Brooklyn's Marguerite Gualtieri resigned as head coach ... Gary and Kim Van Atta, cocoaches at Tennessee-Martin, awarded a new four-year contract. The Van Attas joined the staff in 1996 and were named 1998 Ohio Valley Conferences coaches of the year.
Women's basketball assistants--Joy Kwansniak and Sherri Abbey-Nowatzki resigned as assistant coaches at St. Bonaventure. Kwansniak served on the staff for seven years, including three years as restricted-earnings coach, while Abbey-Nowatzki closes at two-year stint with the school.
Men's and women's cross country--Xavier men's and women's cross country coach Randy Cox resigned after five years.
Men's and women's cross country assistant--Teressa Ann Diperna hired as assistant coach at Syracuse. Diperna, who also will fulfill assistant coaching duties with the men's and women's track and field teams, most recently coached track and field and cross country at El Cerrito (California) High School.
Football--Fordham named Ken O'Keefe as head coach. O'Keefe, who has been head coach at Allegheny for the past eight years, succeeds Nick Quartaro, who resigned to accepted an assistant coaching position at Iowa State.
Football assistants--Massachusetts appointed Jim Bradley outside linebackers coach, Brian Picucci graduate assistant offensive coach and Jamaal Stephenson graduate assistant defensive coach. In six years at Wagner, Bradley served as defensive coordinator, defensive secondary coach and special teams coordinator. Picucci has been offensive coordinator at Central High School in Bristol, Connecticut. Stephenson is a 1997 graduate of Brown, where he was a four-year letter winner at defensive back ... Craig Moropoulos selected as offensive coordinator and James Williams named defensive backs coach at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Moropoulos served as quarterbacks coach at Boise State last season and Williams, who completed a seven-year stint in the National Football League in 1996, most recently worked as a graduate assistant at Fresno State assisting with the secondary ... Jersey City State added Chuck Murphy as defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach, Tom Mendez as offensive line coach, Reggie Beard as receivers coach and John Lindley as video coordinator ... VMI named five assistant coaches: Jack Baker will assist with offensive backs and concentrate on running backs, and Reggie Lawrence will coach wide receivers after serving as head football coach at Camden (New Jersey) High School for two seasons. David Merritt, defensive ends coach, worked as outside linebackers coach at Chattanooga last season. Ron Reese, defensive tackles coach, most recently was an assistant at Mankato State, while Shad Santee, secondary assistant, served for two years as wide receivers coach at Citadel ... Eddie Johnson and Tommy Groom, assistant coaches at Marietta, will not return for the 1998 season. Johnson accepted an outside linebackers coaching position with Wofford and Groom, the team's offensive coordinator last season, took a position with a sporting goods company ... Alcorn State tapped Mario Kirksey as defensive coordinator, Roger Totten as offensive coordinator, Anthony Woolfolk as defensive backs coach, Rile Murry Jr. as offensive line coach and Tyrone Jones as defensive line coach ... Tim Carras resigned as defensive backs coach at Miami (Ohio) ... St. John's (New York) announced the appointment of Scott Williams as running backs coach ... Ron Hudson accepted the position of offensive line coach at Southeast Missouri State.
Men's golf--Wittenberg appointed Chris Wilberding head coach. He replaces Jim Kincaid, who resigned. Wilberding has been men's tennis coach at the school for the past two years and assistant men's basketball coach for three seasons.
Women's golf--April von Haefen hired as head women's golf coach at her alma mater, Xavier, succeeding Connie McCarthy, who resigned. Von Haefen currently is the merchandise manager at Wetherington Golf and Country Club in West Chester, Ohio.
Men's lacrosse assistant--John Moreland selected as assistant coach at Marietta. Moreland is slated to assist with recruiting and day-to-day planning.
Men's soccer--Limestone appointed Chris Masters head coach. Masters has been assistant coach since August 1997 and succeeds Mike Cerino, who will retain men's lacrosse coaching duties ... Chris Neal named at Pfeiffer. Neal most recently was assistant men's coach at Augusta State.
Women's soccer--Alexander Czajkowski tapped as women's soccer coach at Catholic ... Binghamton announced the selection of Jeff Leightman as head coach. Leightman, who previously worked as assistant coach at the school from 1993 to 1995, has been an assistant coach and goalkeepers coach at Villanova. He replaces Kym Eynard-Bozzi, who resigned.
Women's soccer assistants--Eric Alonzo named assistant coach at Angelo State following a three-year stint as a graduate assistant coach for men's and women's soccer at Incarnate Word. Alonzo also will assume lecture responsibilities in the kinesiology department ... Cal Poly San Luis Obispo hired Kolleen Kassis as assistant coach. Kassis succeeds Dan Tobias, who resigned.
Men's and women's swimming and diving--Metropolitan State's Rob Nasser resigned as coach after four years. Nasser accepted a position with the school's information and technology department as a network administrator.
Men's tennis--Dave Engle, women's tennis coach at Wittenberg, accepted expanded duties as head men's coach. Engle succeeds Chris Wilberding, who assumed duties as head men's golf coach at the school.

Limin Jin appointed head women's coach at California (Pennsylvania). Jin has been head coach at Maryland-Eastern Shore since 1996.
ASSOCIATIONS
Dallas businessman Fred McClure was elected chairman of the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association (CBAA) for a two-year term and will serve as the Cotton Bowl's chief executive officer. McClure, who succeeds W. Mike Baggett, has served for the past two years as one of four vice-chairmen on the board of directors of the Southwestern Bell Cotton Bowl. The CBAA also elected these vice-chairmen: Fin Ewing III, owner of Ewing Automotive Group in Plano, Texas; Lamar Hunt Sr., owner of the National Football League's Kansas City Chiefs; Gayle M. Earls, president and chief executive officer of Texas Independent Bank in Dallas; and David Whitney, president of the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau.
NATIONAL OFFICE
Allison Freedman, NCAA membership services representative, resigned to accept the position of assistant athletics director for student-athlete services at Pacific (California). Freedman has been with the Association for almost two years.

SEMINAR
Adelphi will host its inaugural Baseball, Education and Society Symposium at 4 p.m. April 23 in Woodruff Hall. The symposium is free to the public and will explore topics such as critical issues facing baseball, ways to encourage youth to participate in baseball and ways to harmonize relationships between players, owners, fans and the media. The event will feature panelists Geoff Belinfante, executive producer, Major League Baseball Productions; Dave Howard, senior vice-president, business and legal affairs, New York Mets; Steve Jacobson, sports columnist, Newsday; Arther Kaminsky, vice president and cofounder, The Marquee Group; and Mel Southard, former vice-president and counsel, New York Yankees. Winners of the NCAA/AT&T Long Distance Awards for February are: Three-point field goals per game -- Division I men, Cedric Foster, Mississippi State, 5.7; Division II men, Mark Hamilton, Montana State-Billings, 5.5; Division III men, Jeff Clement, Grinnell, 11.8; and Division I women, Aubrey Eblin, Old Dominion, 4.3. Three-point field-goal percentage -- Division I men, Royce Olney, New Mexico, 60.0; Division II men, Jeff Kliewer, Eckerd, 60.7; Division III men, Jim McNiff, Catholic, 57.1; and Division I women, Sarah Lenschow, Valparaiso, 55.2.
Brandy Fisher of New Hampshire netted the first-ever Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, presented to the nation's top women's ice hockey player. The award's namesake was a four-year letter winner at Princeton and the Ivy Group's most valuable player in 1985-86. Kazmaier died in 1990 at age 28 of a rare blood disease.
DEATHS
Wallace Maxwell, Eastern New Mexico director of intramural sports and recreation, died recently of a heart attack. Wallace, who had been director of intramurals for nine years, also taught in the health and physical education department.
