Drury swims to second straight women's championship

Drury earned its second consecutive NCAA Division II Women's Swimming and Diving Championship March 11-14 in Ashland, Ohio.

The Panthers rolled up 5781/2 points to outdistance second-place Cal State Bakersfield, which had 386. Clarion was third with 3601/2 points.

Drury was led by Christina Tompkins, who won the 1,650-yard freestyle, 200 medley and was part of the winning 800 freestyle relay team.

Senior Karyln Pipes-Neilsen of Cal St. Bakersfield set an NCAA record in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:00.54.

Pipes-Neilsen also finished first in the 100 backstroke, the 400 individual medley and helped the Roadrunners capture two relay titles.

Meitri Pangestika of Salem-Teikyo claimed the 200 and 500 freestyle events.

Ashland senior Jamie McDaniel set NCAA records in the 100 freestyle and the 50 freestyle and was named the women's swimmer of the year.

Truman State's Seth Huston received coach of the year honors.

Mary Ahlin swept both the one- and three-meter diving events and was named women's diver of the year.
