Colorado claims skiing title in closest competition in 34 years
Powered by Line Selnes, who swept the two women's Nordic races, and Caroline Gedde-Dahl, who won the women's slalom, Colorado claimed the 1998 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Skiing Championships, nipping defending champion Utah by 2 1/2 points.
The team race was the closest since 1964, when Denver beat Dartmouth by 1.4 points. In 1976, Colorado and Dartmouth tied.
The event was conducted March 11-14, with Montana State serving as host.
Selnes, whose older sister Heidi swept the two women's Nordic races in 1995, claimed the five-kilometer classical in 15:49.3 on March 12, then won the 15-kilometer freestyle in 41:19.4 on the last day of the championships. Teammate Unni Eder provided depth in both races, placing second in freestyle and fourth in classical.
Gedde-Dahl became the first Colorado skier to win the women's giant slalom since Lynda McGehee won in 1986.
The Buffaloes, who last won the team championship in 1995, increased their all-time total to 14, which ties Denver for the record. Colorado widened its lead over Denver in all-time individual champions. The Buffaloes have 63. Denver, which had one champion this year, has 53.
Vermont's Thorodd Bakken dominated the men's Nordic in the same fashion as Selnes, claiming both races. Bakken successfully defended his freestyle title as Utah's Rune Kollerud finished second for the second straight year. Last year, Bakken's winning margin was a boot length. This year, his time was 2.2 seconds faster than his rival's. Rune's brother Frode was third. In classical, Frode was second; Rune was third.
In men's giant slalom, David Viele of Dartmouth became the first from his school to win since Tom Foote won in 1988. Viele's showing also was the first championship for a Dartmouth male since that same year. It was the first championship from the East region in the event since Vermont's Einar Bohmer won in 1990.
Bakken's performance aside, this was not the year to be a defending champion.
Utah was unsuccessful in its title defense. Of the other four returning individual champions, defending women's slalom champion Roberta Pergher of Denver, who had won the last two years, had the best showing, finishing third. Defending men's slalom champion Izidor Jerman of Alaska Anchorage finished seventh. Vermont's Brandon Dyksterhouse, who won last year's men's giant slalom, finished 32nd this year. Defending women's classical champion Doris Hausleitner of Alaska Anchorage finished 10th.
