After a long wait, Texas takes home I women's indoor title

For the past several years -- most likely from the time coach Bev Kearney arrived in 1993 -- supporters of Texas women's track and field have been waiting for the Longhorns to unseat LSU atop the track world.

The wait is over.

Displaying the dominant performance that many have been expecting, Texas recorded four first-place individual showings to rack up 60 points and blow away the field March 13-14 at Indianapolis.

Texas, which compiled 40 points on the second day of competition, earned its fourth championship but its first since 1990.

LSU, which was vying for its sixth consecutive crown, placed runner-up for the first time. The Tigers amassed 30 points.

The Longhorns' 30-point margin was the largest in championships history.

Third place was shared by Georgetown and Pittsburgh (26 points each), while Michigan, with 241/2 points, claimed the fifth spot in the team standings.

"We faced the ghosts within ourselves and we beat that ghost," said Kearney. "Any doubts about beating them now are gone...gone."

Although they only scored points in six of 15 events, the Longhorns made it look easy from the start.

Having compiled 20 points on the first day of competition, Texas virtually clinched the title midway through the championships' second session when Suziann Reid won the 400-meter dash in a season's collegiate-best time of 52.57, and Toya Brown finished third. The showings gave Texas 38 points.

"That race decided how everything would turn out," said Kearney. "Winning feels terrific .... We willed it. I told them that's what it would come down to. Not who had the most talent, but who had the will to do it."

Angie Vaughn, Lakeisha Backus and Erin Aldrich not only had the will, they had the talent.

Competing in the 55-meter high hurdles, Vaughn equaled the championships' record in the event set by Florida's Michelle Freeman in 1992, racing to the finish in 7.41 seconds.

Backus contributed a team-best 16 points, winning the 200-meter dash and placing third in the 55-meter event, while Aldrich won the high-jump crown with a mark of 1.94 meters (6 feet, 41/4 inches).

The Longhorns' final points came in the 1,600-meter relay as Alejandro Valles, Reid, Sheneka Griffin and Brown finished second to Baylor in 3:34.06.

Individually, Melissa Price of Fresno State became the NCAA's first women's pole vault champion, winning the inaugural event with a mark of 4.22 meters (13-10). Price was the only competitor to exceed 13 feet.

Trecia Smith of Pittsburgh swept the long and triple jumps to join Sheila Hudson of California (1990) as the only athletes to win both events in the same year. The long-jump crown was Smith's second straight.

Teri Tunks became the first women's championships competitor to surpass 60 feet in the shot put with an effort of 60-51/4.
