Midwestern State names volleyball coach

Eunice Thomas head women's volleyball coach. In addition, Thomas will serve as senior woman administrator and teach in the physical education department.

As an assistant coach at Southeast Missouri State for the past three seasons, Thomas was responsible for most of the recruiting and helped with workouts, academic progress and fund-raising projects.

Collegiately, Thomas was a four-year letterwinner as a middle blocker on the Kentucky volleyball team. In addition to being a member of the school's 1,000-kill club, she is ranked in the top 10 in block assists, solo blocks, career digs and hitting percentage. Thomas was named to three all-Southeastern Conference teams, netted academic all-SEC recognition and was a member of the SEC all-tournament team for three straight years. She also played professionally with the St. Louis Spirits.

Thomas earned a bachelor's degree in communication information studies at Kentucky and has begun work on a master's degree in administration of human services at Southeast Missouri State.

La Salle President Joseph F. Burke resigned ... John R. Halstead appointed president at Mansfield, effective in July. Halstead had been vice-president for student affairs at Maine ... Charles W. Johnson, board of trustees chairman at Fisk, selected as acting president at the school ... Robert W. Kustra, lieutenant governor of Illinois, named president at Eastern Kentucky, effective July 1 ... Niel T. Zimmerman, vice-president for academic affairs and provost at Eastern Washington, appointed acting president at the school.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Duke tapped Joe Alleva as athletics director ... Richard M. Regan Jr. hired as director of athletics at Holy Cross, effective July 1. Regan currently works as managing director of the Scotland franchise of the National Football League (NFL) Europe League (previously the World League) and managing director of NFL International Ltd. ... Augustana (Illinois) named Greg Wallace as men's athletics director and Liesl Fowler as women's athletics director. Wallace, who also is head baseball coach and offensive coordinator for football at the school, replaces John Farwell, who is retiring. Fowler will retain her duties as women's volleyball coach, a position she has held since the 1992-93 school year.

Chris Kennedy accepted the position of associate athletics director at Duke.

COACHES

Baseball--Chris Persing named pitching coach at Susquehanna, his alma mater.

Men's basketball--Fort Lewis announced the selection of Keith Durham as head coach, replacing Jim Cross, whose contract was not renewed for the 1998-99 season after 10 years in the post. Durham has been head coach of the school's women's team for the past three seasons ... UC Santa Barbara coach Jerry Pimm will step down after 15 years as head coach. Pimm, the most-victorious coach in school history with a 222-201 record, will continue at the school as an assistant to the athletics director ... Houston released Alvin Brooks, effective April 3, after a five-year stint as head coach ... South Carolina assistant coach Jeff Lebo named head coach at Tennessee Tech. Lebo, who has been at South Carolina for six seasons, succeeds 10-year veteran Frank Harrell, who resigned ... Eldon Miller resigned as head coach at Northern Iowa, effective April 1. In 12 years as head coach at the school, Miller compiled a 164-178 mark. Miller is ranked 12th among active Division I coaches with 568 career victories ... Winthrop released head coach Dan Kenney after six years ... Keith Peterson resigned as head coach at North Park.

Men's basketball assistants--Bobby Stevens and Greg Domecq released as assistant coaches at Winthrop. Stevens had coached at the school for eight years and Domecq had served six years ... Manhattan assistant coach Tony Chiles resigned.

Women's basketball--Maryland granted a contract extension to head coach Chris Weller through the 1998-99 season ... Wayne Byrd, head coach at North Alabama since 1983, announced his retirement. With a record of 232-199, Byrd closes his tenure as the most-victorious women's basketball coach in school history ... Army head coach Lynn Chiavaro resigned, effective immediately. Chiavaro amassed a record of 132-160 in 11 years to become Army's all-time winningest women's basketball coach.

Football--Fordham head coach Nick Quartaro resigned after four seasons to become assistant head coach at Iowa State. Vince Sinagra, defensive coordinator, has been selected as interim coach ... Gettysburg head coach Barry Streeter will take on additional responsibilities as defensive coordinator ... Bryant named Jim Miceli as the first head football coach in the school's history.

Football assistants--Dave Borbely, offensive line coach at Stanford for the last three seasons, tapped as offensive line coach at Notre Dame ... Gettysburg defensive coordinator John Campo will coach running backs next season, succeeding John Schmid, who will serve as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Jim Page, defensive line coach for the last five seasons, will not return for the 1998 season ... Jeff McInerney hired as linebackers coach at Oregon State. McInerney, defensive line coach at Southern California for two seasons, replaces James West, who resigned ... Bryant named Scott Kochman assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach; Dennis Moynihan defensive coordinator; Steven Knowlton linebackers coach; Tony Teolis defensive backfield coach; Mike Salomone tight ends coach; Wayne Simarrian defensive line coach; Jeremy Cameron wide receivers coach and football recruiting coordinator; Glenn Castaglia running backs coach; and Jonathan DeMarco defensive backs coach ... UC Davis quarterbacks coach Ken O'Brien appointed to the same position at Southern California. O'Brien played quarterback for the National Football League's New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles... Gene Chizik, defensive coordinator at Stephen F. Austin, named defensive coordinator at Central Florida. In six seasons at Stephen F. Austin, Chizik worked as defensive coordinator and coached linebackers and the secondary. Denzil Cox will replace Chizik at Stephen F. Austin ... Nevada appointed Tom Mason secondary coach ... Fred Bleil accepted the position of secondary coach at San Diego State ... Auburn's Lionel James resigned as tight ends coach to become an assistant coach with the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League ... Al Simmons named cornerbacks coach at California ... Miami (Florida) tapped Vernon Hargreaves as linebackers coach ... Paul Randolph selected as linebackers coach and Dave Walkosky as defensive coordinator at Tennessee-Martin ... Virginia Tech appointed Tony Ball as receivers coach.

Women's golf--Kim Kincer accepted the position of head women's golf coach and assistant director of professional golf management at Methodist. For the past eight years, Kincer, who replaces Karen Gray, has been head golf professional and manager at Tates Creek Golf Course in Lexington, Kentucky.

Men's lacrosse--Keene State tapped Liam Daly as head coach.

Women's lacrosse--Amy Watson named head coach at Keene State.

Women's lacrosse assistant--Susquehanna appointed Sarah Catlin as assistant coach. Catlin has coached in the United States Field Hockey Association's Futures Program for the past two years and also has coached in elite field hockey camps.

Women's rowing--Marietta women's crew coach Bob Garbutt will not return next season. Garbutt, who has coached at the school for three seasons, has accepted a position with Gallagher & Gallagher, a New Jersey law firm.

Men's soccer--Paul Hogan named head coach at Allegheny ... Monmouth hired Shannon Poser as head coach ... Bryan Scales appointed head coach at Cornell. Scales, a four-year assistant at the school, succeeds Dave Sarachan, who resigned.

Women's swimming and diving--Brian Vereb selected as head coach of the new women's swimming and diving team at Akron.

Men's and women's tennis--Texas A&M-Corpus Christi hired Ken de Koning as coordinator of tennis. De Koning will retain his responsibilities as director of tennis at Kings Crossing Country Club, a position he has held for 10 years ... Gene Miller, coach at Pennsylvania, will step down after the spring season for personal reasons. Miller has been head coach for seven years.

CONFERENCES

Big West Conference information director Dennis Bickmeier named manager of community relations for the Anaheim Angels. Bickmeier had been with the conference since 1993.


NOTABLES

The National Association of Basketball Coaches selected five former players for its 1998 Hillyard Silver Anniversary All-America Team. Guy V. Lewis, head basketball coach at Houston for 30 years before retiring in 1986, also played collegiately for Houston and served as team captain. Mike Boylan was Assumption's first Division II all-America selection and is the third-ranked all-time scorer in school history with 2,009 points. Boylan currently is vice-president of golf promotions for Wilson Sporting Goods Company. Doug Collins, Illinois State's all-time scoring leader with 2,240 points, has worked as head coach of the Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons in the National Basketball Association and also served as a broadcaster with CBS and TNT. Former Memphis head coach Larry Finch is the only coach in NCAA history to help the school to a Final Four appearance as a player, have his jersey retired and become the school's most victorious coach. In 11 years as head coach at the school, Finch compiled a 220-130 record and orchestrated eight postseason appearances. Ed Ratleff, Long Beach State's all-time scoring average leader, played in the National Basketball Association with the Houston Rockets for five years and currently runs his own insur-ance office. Dave Winfield, three-time all-Big Ten Conference selection and all-America pitcher at Minnesota, played basketball at the school for two seasons. Drafted professionally in baseball, basketball and football, Winfield has been a professional baseball player, and is a 12-time All-Star selection and 3,000-hit player. The winners will be honored March 27 at the NABC convention.


DEATHS

Larry Freer, Bowie State baseball coach, died March 1 at age 48. Freer, who joined the staff at the school in 1996, piloted the squad to its second straight Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association title last season. He worked part-time at the school and also was a sergeant with the Howard County (Maryland) Police Department.

Former Ohio State football player and assistant coach Esco Sarkkinen died February 28 in Columbus. He was 79. A letterman from 1937 to 1939, Sarkkinen was an all-America selection at Ohio State in 1939. He also served as assistant coach from 1946 until his retirement in 1978.
