Ohio Northern names head soccer coach
Ohio Northern has named Brent Ridenour as head men's soccer coach.
Ridenour succeeds the program's founder, Amar Bhattacharya, who stepped down after 23 years as head coach. Bhattacharya will continue to serve as a recruiting coordinator at the school.
Ridenour has been assistant women's soccer coach and assistant baseball coach at the school for the past two seasons.
A two-sport standout as a student-athlete at Ohio Northern, Ridenour played soccer and baseball. He holds every soccer scoring record at the school, including career goals scored with 56. He also was a four-time all-Ohio Athletic Conference selection in soccer from 1991 to 1994. Ridenour closed his collegiate baseball career ranked second on the school's all-time hits list with 174.
Ridenour graduated from Ohio Northern in 1995 and anticipates earning a master's degree from Bowling Green State in the summer of 1998.

E. K. Fretwell Jr. selected as interim president at North Florida. Fretwell is chancellor emeritus at North Carolina-Charlotte ... Jeffrey F. Bullock, vice-president and dean of the theological seminary at Dubuque, named president at the school, effective June 1 ... Eugene M. Hughes announced his retirement as president at Wichita State, effective December 31 ... Nazareth appointed Robert A. Miller president, effective August 1. Miller has been vice-president for academic affairs at Queens (North Carolina) ... John A. Roush, vice-president for planning at Richmond, selected as president at Centre, effective July 1 ... Elon President J. Fred Young announced plans to retire, effective December 31.
FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE
Warren Hickman appointed faculty athletics representative at Westminster, replacing G. Eugene Hill, who is retiring at the end of the current school year. Hickman, a mathematics professor, has been a member of the school's faculty since 1968.
DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Moravian appointed Richard M. Dull as athletics director ... Harry Royle named athletics director at Hofstra ... UTEP tapped Bob Stull as athletics director. Stull has been associate athletics director for development at Washington ... Frank S. Pergolizzi accepted the athletics director's post at East Tennessee State after nine years as athletics director at St. Francis (Pennsylvania). Pergolizzi succeeds Keener Fry, who resigned to become associate athletics director at Wyoming, and Randy Eaton, who currently is serving as interim athletics director ... St. Norbert announced the hiring of Donald Maslinski as athletics director, replacing Larry Van Alstine, who retired. Maslinski has served as a high-school principal since 1991.
ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Morris Brown named Charles E. Mooney as assistant athletics director for media relations. Mooney has worked as public relations director at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the past 28 months ... Fresno State sports information director Dave Haglund hired as assistant athletics director for media relations at Maryland.
COACHES
Baseball assistant--Southern Illinois-Edwardsville tapped Tony Duenas as assistant coach. Duenas, who will work with the pitchers and the offense, also works as a special education teacher at the middle-school level.
Men's basketball--Larry Hauser named head coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills ... Chicago State will not renew the contract of head coach Phil Gray. Gray closes his tenure with a 6-42 record after becoming head coach during the 1996-97 season ... Monmouth promoted interim head coach Dave Calloway to head coach. Calloway took over for Wayne Szoke, who resigned in January ... Widener head coach C. Alan Rowe stepped down after 33 years with a career record of 536-324. Rowe will continue to teach math at the school.
Women's basketball--George Mason announced the selection of Debbie Taneyhill as head coach ... Marti Gasser, head coach at Air Force since 1983, resigned, effective June 30. During her tenure, Air Force netted three Continental Divide titles and one Colorado Athletic Conference title ... Liz Galloway-McQuitter announced her resignation as head coach at Northern Illinois after four seasons and a career win-loss mark at the school of 37-75.
Men's cross country--Wisconsin-La Crosse head coach Phil Esten announced his retirement from coaching, effective at the end of the 1998 spring semester. Esten, who will continue to serve as a professor in the exercise and sport science program, has led the team into championship competition in 27 of his 28 seasons at the school.
Women's cross country--Central (Iowa) hired Mike Gruver as head women's coach.
Field hockey--Melissa Ela appointed field hockey coach at St. Joseph's (Maine).
Football--North Texas named Darrell Dickey head coach. Dickey, who replaces Matt Simon, has been offensive coordinator at Southern Methodist ... Jeff Bower granted a four-year contract as head coach at Southern Mississippi.
Football assistants--Chris Jones named defensive line coach and Larry Porter named running backs coach at Tennessee-Martin. Jones has been a graduate assistant coach for the defense at Alabama and Porter has been running backs and defensive backs coach at Wooddale (Memphis) High School for the past two seasons ... Houston selected George Yarno as offensive line coach and Donnie Henderson as defensive backs coach. Yarno was offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Idaho for three seasons. Henderson has been on the Arizona State staff for the past six years and has served as defensive secondary coach for the last three ... Alabama State announced the following appointments of assistant coaches: Ron Dickerson Jr., running backs coach; Ben Harris, assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach; Stanley Clayton, offensive line coach; Ron McCrone, defensive coordinator; Guy Holiday, offensive coordinator; Fred Franklin, tight ends coach; Dredrick Bell, defensive line coach; and Eric Carter, defensive ends coach ... John Settle hired as running backs coach at Fresno State. Settle, who has been an assistant coach with the Cleveland Browns/Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League for the past three seasons, succeeds Kelly Skipper, who resigned to accepted an assistant coaching post at UCLA ... Elliot Uzelac and Dan Rocco tapped as assistant coaches at Maryland. Uzelac, who was offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Minnesota last season, will coach offensive guards and centers. At Texas, Rocco coached outside linebackers for three seasons and defensive ends for one. He will coach outside linebackers. Maryland also expanded the duties of tight ends coach Bob Heffner, who also will work with offensive tackles, and defensive coordinator and defensive ends coach Wally Ake, who also will coach inside linebackers ... Taver Johnson accepted the post of defensive coordinator at Millikin ... James West, linebackers coach at Oregon State, resigned ... Nebraska selected Dave Gillespie as running backs coach ... Damon Baldwin hired as offensive line coach at San Diego State ... DelVaughn Alexander named wide receivers coach at UNLV ... Delaware selected Dave Scott as volunteer assistant football coach ... Dennis Creehan appointed defensive coordinator at Rutgers ... Vanderbilt tapped Steve Crosby as offensive coordinator and Dino Folino as secondary coach. Crosby succeeds Ed Lambert, who was promoted to assistant head coach. Also, recruiting coordinator Ray Zingler assumed additional responsibilities as special teams coach and defensive coordinator Norm Parker is taking on additional duties as linebackers coach.
Men's and women's golf--Dartmouth named Kevin Gibson interim women's head coach ... Mike Mayer accepted the head men's coaching post at Indiana ... Larry Beem appointed head coach at his alma mater, New Mexico State, replacing Ross Nettles, who resigned to assume a position with a golf course. Beem has worked as the general manager and head golf professional at White Sands Missile Range since 1987.
Women's golf assistant--Texas hired Martha Richards Freitag as assistant coach. Freitag has served as head women's coach at Boise State since August 1997 and succeeds Casey Whalen, who accepted a men's golf assistant coaching position at UNLV.
Men's lacrosse assistants--Hartwick alumnus Jake Burns and Chris McQueeney hired as assistant coaches at the school. McQueeney worked as an assistant coach at Salisbury State last year.
Men's soccer--St. Peter's announced the selection of John Calcaterra as head coach.
Men's soccer assistant--Merchant Marine hired John Fitzgerald as assistant coach for the 1998 season. Fitzgerald has been head coach of the Long Island Lady Rough Riders since 1996. Also, for the past two years, Fitzgerald headed the Long Island Junior Soccer League Coaching Academy, a branch of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Women's soccer assistant--Kansas tapped Ellen Peterfeso as assistant coach.
Women's softball--Lori De Luca appointed head coach at Rutgers-Newark.
Women's volleyball--Hollie Miller named head coach at Eckerd ... Dorinda von Tersch named head coach at Colgate ... Kim Byrd Zenner appointed head coach at her alma mater, East Tennessee State, replacing Kelly Andrews, who resigned to serve full time as senior woman administrator at the school after coaching for 10 years. Zenner has been an assistant and interim head coach at Tennessee during the past six years ... Tennessee-Martin head coach Milly MacDonell resigned after 14 years with an overall mark of 238-308 ... Revis Ward selected as head coach at Texas-Pan American, succeeding Oscar Segovia, who resigned. Ward served as head coach, director of operations/business administration for the athletics department and senior woman administrator during a stint at Oral Roberts before resigning in 1997 to complete work on a master's degree ... Drake hired Blaine Tendler as women's volleyball coach.
Women's volleyball assistants--Erikka Gulbranson named assistant coach at Utah State. Gulbranson worked as an assistant coach at Idaho last season ... Alexis Dankulic accepted an assistant coach's post at Syracuse. Dankulic has been an assistant coach at Northwestern State since August.
Men's water polo--Travis Wyckoff resigned as coach at Santa Clara.
STAFF
Compliance director--San Jose State named Gloria Nevarez director of compliance. Nevarez comes from California, where she was a compliance assistant.
Compliance assistant--Maryland tapped Amy Skarbek as assistant certification coordinator. Skarbek has been a graduate assistant at Central Connecticut State for two years.
Development director--Pittsburgh selected Maureen Mihm Anderson as director of development for the athletics department. Anderson most recently served as special events and marketing coordinator for Family House.
Sports information assistants--Brenda Rabon appointed assistant sports information director and athletics department sales director at Clemson ... Miami (Florida) hired Joe Hornstein as assistant sports information director. Hornstein was a graduate assistant in the Florida State sports information office for three years.
Strength and conditioning coach--Tim Moffit accepted the head strength and conditioning coach's position at Miami (Florida). Moffit served as assistant strength and conditioning coach at Tennessee.
CONFERENCES
The Atlantic 10 appointed Charles J. Kalis as supervisor of football officials.
NATIONAL OFFICE STAFF
Julie Roe-Sumner has been selected as a student-athlete reinstatement representative after serving as an intern with the Association since September 1997.
CORRECTION
A preview of the Division II Wrestling Championships that appeared in the February 23 issue of The NCAA News incorrectly identified a member of the team at Pittsburgh-Johnstown. Jody Strittmatter, currently ranked second in the division at 118 pounds, is a redshirt freshman on this year's team. His brother, John, finished fifth at 118 pounds last year and is redshirting this year.
NOTABLES
Bill Knapton, former Beloit head basketball coach; Barbara Stevens, head women's basketball coach at Bentley; and Craig Thompson, Sun Belt Conference commissioner, are among the 1998 Sports Ethics Fellows selected by the Institute for International Sport. Honorees are recognized for consistently demonstrating an interest in promoting the ideals of ethics and fair play in sport and society.
Peyton Manning received the Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the nation. Manning is the fourth football player and the first from Tennessee to win the honor.
DEATHS
George Mason volleyball coach Uvaldo Acosta died February 12 near Kaneohe, Hawaii. He was 32.
Warren Woodson, the most successful coach in New Mexico State football history, died recently in Dallas of colon cancer, at age 95. As coach of the football squad at New Mexico State from 1958 to 1967, Woodson orchestrated six winning seasons and back-to-back Sun Bowl victories in 1959 and 1960, and became the only coach in the nation whose team had the top individual rusher for four years straight. A 1989 inductee into the College Hall of Fame, Woodson retired in 1974.
Marion "Madeo" Rossi, Akron Hall of Fame quarterback during the 1950s, died February 20 at age 68. After graduation, he was a coach and athletics administrator at high schools in Akron.
Oklahoma's first sports information director, Harold Keith, died of congestive heart failure February 24. He was 94. Collegiately, Keith was a champion distance runner at Oklahoma before assuming responsibility for the school's sports public relations in 1930. He founded and served as president of the College Sports Information Directors of America. Keith penned two books about Oklahoma football and was an award-winning author of children's books (see story on page 4).
