Antigambling video sent to Division I basketball coaches

Men's basketball coaches at all Division I institutions have received a copy of a new NCAA antigambling video.

The Division I Men's Basketball Committee is recommending that the video be reviewed by basketball staff and student-athletes before play commences in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship.

The video was mailed February 24.

DIVISION I

Business/Finance Cabinet asks other groups to prioritize

The Division I Business/Finance Cabinet has developed a balanced preliminary budget for Division I, but it deferred until June making any recommendations for certain funding increases requested for the 1998-99 fiscal year.

Instead, it asked the Strategic Planning and the Championships/Competition Cabinets to prioritize their new funding requests.

The Division I Business/Finance Cabinet serves as a filter for the Management Council for reviewing committee recommendations that require funding.

The cabinet will review the prioritized re-quests in June, at which time it may make recommendations for any funding allocations to the Division I Management Council.

DIVISION III

Panel recommends 24 teams for postseason football

The Division III Football Committee committee has voted to recommend to the Division III Championships Committee that the number of teams participating in postseason play be expanded from 16 to 24 teams, effective with the 1998 championship.

In its proposal, the committee will recommend that a 16-team national-championship field and an eight-team, four bowl-game concept (Option No. 2 from last year's Division III survey) be implemented for the next two years. The committee's long-term goal is to study the feasibility of a 24-team, five-week national championship that would be conducted no earlier than the 2000 football season.

INTERNET

Basketball web sites return for more March Madness

The NCAA's popular Web site for the Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Championships will be available again in 1998.

All of the features that were so popular last year will be back, including the Java-based "desktop scoreboard," which provides real-time updates for games in progress.

The site also will include several major im-provements, the most notable of which will be the addition of six computer video games.

Other improvements include:

  • An enhanced design, which should make it easier for users to move among the many available options.

  • Addition of a "guest book."

  • More information on the pages for each of the competing teams.

  • More depth from the Audionet broadcasts.

    FINANCIAL AID

Committee examines effects of aid limits on Title IX compliance

The Division I Committee on Financial Aid has mapped out plans for studying the scholarship-equity issue that arose recently when the U.S. Office for Civil Rights (OCR) expressed concern that institutions offering a full complement of scholarships in women's sports inadvertently may violate Title IX financial aid requirements.

The committee is acting in response to a request from the Division I Management Council, which requested recommendations regarding the issue.
