McNally named athletics director at Gannon
Gannon has appointed Kathleen McNally as athletics director. McNally succeeds Richard Dunford, who retired December 31.
McNally comes to Gannon from La Salle, where she has served as assistant athletics director since 1977. Her responsibilities included working as senior woman administrator.
Before assuming her post at La Salle, McNally coached and taught health and physical education at the high-school level. During her tenure as head coach of field hockey at La Salle from 1976 to 1980, McNally produced two Olympians and netted a national championship in 1980. She also was honored as coach of the year in 1980 by the Philadelphia Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.
McNally, a 1968 graduate of West Chester, also has been a member of the NCAA Council as well as other NCAA, Eastern College Athletic Conference and Midwestern Collegiate Conference committees.

Bruce Baumgartner named athletics director at Edinboro, where he was acting AD. The former Olympic wrestling champion previously was head wrestling coach at the school ... Jeffrey H. Ward named Ashmead White Director of Athletics at Bowdoin, effective July 1. Ward, who has been assistant athletics director at Brown, succeeds Sidney J. Watson ... Mitch Barnhart accepted the athletics director's post at Oregon State ... Morehead State's Mike Mincey, vice-president for student life, assumed additional duties as director of athletics.
ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Kathy Worthington, assistant director of athletics for marketing and promotions at Morehead State, promoted to associate director of athletics at the school ... Casey Scott promoted to associate athletics director at Wichita State. Scott, who has been senior assistant athletics director at the school since 1994, will assume expanded responsibilities overseeing the athletics department's fund-raising arm ... Pittsburgh's Jim Earle promoted to associate athletics director for business, finance and personnel. He was assistant athletics director for game-day marketing and merchandising. Earle succeeds Joe Phillips, who was promoted to the university's auxiliary service department.
SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR
Six-year associate athletics director Darlene Bailey named senior associate athletics director/senior woman administrator at Wichita State. She retains essentially the same responsibilities.
COACHES
Baseball assistants--Quinnipiac hired Tim Belcher as assistant baseball coach responsible for outfielders ... Rick Miller tapped as assistant coach at Colby-Sawyer.
Men's basketball--Western Kentucky associate head coach Ron Brown and assistant coach Al Seibert named cohead coaches for the remainder of the season after the release of head coach Matt Kilcullen. Kilcullen compiled a 59-39 record in four years ... Texas A&M announced that head coach Tony Barone will be reassigned to duties as special assistant to the athletics director at the end of the season. Barone has compiled a 75-115 mark in seven seasons at the school ... Lou Henson promoted from interim to head coach at New Mexico State, succeeding Neil McCarthy, who was reassigned within the athletics department. Henson previously served as head coach at the school from 1966 to 1975, amassing a 173-71 record and capturing a 1970 Final Four appearance.
Women's basketball--Frank McQuade, head coach at Aurora, granted a contract extension through the 1998-99 season.
Field hockey--Mansfield tapped Diane M. Monkiewicz as head coach ... Joan Broderick accepted the head coaching post at St. Joseph's.
Football--Mark Harriman, Harvard defensive coordinator since 1994, selected as head coach at Bates. Harriman succeeds Rick Pardy, who resigned to become defensive coordinator at Marist ... Franklin announced the appointment of Bill Unsworth as head coach. Unsworth, who served as head coach at the school from 1978 to 1982, replaces Mike McClure, who was named head football coach at South Bend Adams (Indiana) High School. Unsworth also has worked as head wrestling coach, weight event coach in track and assistant professor of physical education at the school ... Matt Simon, head coach at North Texas, released after four seasons and an 18-26-1 record. Assistant coach Bill Michael was appointed interim coach ... Cornell named Peter K. Mangurian head coach. Mangurian, who last year worked as an offensive assistant for the National Football League's Atlanta Falcons, replaces eight-year head man Jim Hofher, who resigned to join the coaching staff at North Carolina ... Glenn Spencer tapped as interim head coach at West Georgia after the resignation of head coach Charlie Fisher.
Football assistants--Syracuse hired Donald "Deek" Pollard as defensive line coach to succeed Ed Orgeron. During the 1995 and 1996 seasons, Pollard was defensive line coach for the St. Louis Rams of the National Football League ... Florida released special teams coach Barry Wilson. During his two-year tenure at the school, Wilson also coached strong-side linebackers ... San Diego tapped Brian Murphy as defensive coordinator, linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator. Murphy, who replaces Jim Wachenheim, has been a graduate assisant defensive backs coach at Baylor since May 1997 ... Six-year Willamette defensive coordinator Bob Gregory hired as defensive secondary coach at Oregon ... Dino Babers selected as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Arizona after coaching running backs last season. Babers succeeds Homer Smith, who announced his retirement for health reasons, effective immediately. Also, Pete Alamar was appointed tight ends coach at the school after being in charge of linebackers and special teams last season. Alamar replaces Marc Lunsford, who was named director of football operations at Arizona ... Dennis Goldman accepted the quarterbacks coaching slot at Citadel ... Mike Barry named offensive line coach at Tennessee ... Northern Arizona assistant coach Don Read resigned. Also, Scott Criner was selected as coach of running backs and tight ends at the school ... Chris Nugai named offensive coordinator and Pete Long named defensive coordinator at Coast Guard ... Clemson tapped Andrea Haley as outside linebackers coach ... J. B. Grimes hired as offensive line coach at Texas A&M ... Michael Gebbia resigned his position as defensive backs coach at Hofstra to accept a similar post at Buffalo ... Men's and women's golf--Purdue's Bob Prange announced his resignation, effective June 30, as head men's and women's golf coach and director of golf operations. He served in the posts for four years ... Karly Mills tapped to head the women's golf program at Portland, which is scheduled to begin competition this fall. Mills served as assistant coach at Oregon in 1995.
Men's lacrosse assistants--Michael Woods appointed men's volunteer assistant coach at Quinnipiac ... Guilford hired alumni Steve Diamond, Bryan Heide and Evan Smith as assistants. Heide is slated to work with the offense and Smith will help coach the defense.
Men's soccer--Tim Lenahan accepted the head coaching position at Lafayette ... Jeff Haines selected as head coach at Richard Stockton ... Jersey City State tapped Kevin East as head coach. East has been assistant coach at Kean for the past four seasons.
Women's soccer--Southern Maine announced the hiring of Steve Quinones as head coach.
Women's softball--George Rollins named head coach at MIT ... Kellie Diehl accepted the head coaching post at Wilmington (Ohio). Diehl will assume additional responsibilities as volleyball coach.
Women's softball assistant--Stephanie Rostawanik tapped as assistant coach at Quinnipiac.
Men's and women's tennis--Texas Christian announed the resignation of head coach Bernard "Tut" Bartzen, effective at the end of the season ... Derrick Racine named head coach at West Flori-da, succeeding Skeeter Carson, who announced his retirement, effective June 1 ... MIT selected Carol Matsuzaki as head coach of women's tennis. Matsuzaki served as junior varsity coach in the fall of 1997 and worked as a volunteer assistant with the program in 1996-97.
Men's and women's track and field assistants--Illinois appointed John Baumann assistant coach after a two-year stint as head strength coach at George Mason. Baumann succeeds Ron Garner, who accepted the position of head women's track and field coach at Clemson ... Akron added Kevin Brown as assistant track and field coach.
Women's volleyball--Toby Rens hired as head coach at Northern Michigan. Rens has been an assistant at George Washington for the past four years ... North Carolina-Pembroke tapped Denise Renfro as head volleyball coach. Renfro will retain her responsibilities as softball coach at the school ... Two-year Illinois assistant coach Tarnisha Thompson resigned to pursue a career in information technology.
STAFF
Compliance coordinator--Korey Torgerson reassigned as compliance coordinator at Wichita State after serving as an administrative assistant.
Facilities director--Wichita State's Spike Anderson promoted from facilities coordinator to director of facilities and events.
Membership services director--Susan Dormann promoted to director of Shocker Athletic Scholarship Organization membership services at Wichita State, where she assumes expanded duties. Dormann has been Shocker Athletic Scholarship Organization membership coordinator for the past five years.
Recruiting coordinator--Fordham selected Tom Pajic as recruiting coordinator.
Athletic training services coordinator--Cristine Monterroso named coordinator of athletic training services at MIT.
Assistant athletic trainer--Jacqueline Atoria named assistant athletic trainer at Rutgers.
CONFERENCES
The Gulf South Conference named Leonard Reich assistant information director. Reich joins the conference from Centenary (New Jersey), where he was in charge of media relations, publications and event management for the athletics department.
ASSOCIATIONS
The Golf Coaches Association of America inducted new officers at its January 29 business meeting. Tim Brown, head men's golf coach and athletics director at Skidmore, was elected to a two-year term as president, and Joe Feaganes, head men's golf coach at Marshall, was elected secretary. Skip Wagnon, head men's golf coach and athletics director at Central Oklahoma, was appointed to a three-year term as Division II representative.
The College Athletic Business Management Association elected the following officers at its 48th annual convention in January: Peter Fields, director of business affairs at Missouri, president; Dennis Helsel, associate director of athletics at Syracuse, first vice-president; Greg Phillips, assistant athletics director at Florida State, second vice-president; Julie Bright, business manager/athletics at Northern Iowa, third vice-president; and Carol A. Bush, assistant athletics director at Army, past-president.
NOTABLES
Finalists for the U.S. Basketball Writers' college basketball player of the year are Antawn Jamison and Vince Carter of North Carolina; Raef LaFrentz and Paul Pierce of Kansas; Mike Bibby and Michael Dickerson of Arizona; Mateen Cleaves, Michigan State; Richard Hamilton, Connecticut; Andre Miller, Utah; Ansu Seay, Mississippi; and Bonzi Wells, Ball State. The award will presented March 28 in San Antonio.
New player and coaching inductees into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame are John F. Driscoll, Candy Finn-Rocha, Mark Greenberg, Connie Burgess Lanzi, Barbara Heylmun Longstreth, Charles Murphy, Robert J. Rule, Susanne Margaret Schooley, Dave Urick and Alice Putnam "Putty" Willetts. The induction ceremony is scheduled July 23 in conjunction with the 1998 ILF World Championship in Baltimore.
The College Athletic Business Management Association honored Texas A&M's Penny King as business manager of the year and East Carolina's Earline Leggett and Pennsylvania's Bud Ledwell as winners of the George Eldridge Distinguished Service Award.
DEATHS
George "Bad News" Cafego, former football coach at Tennessee, died recently at the age of 82. Cafego netted all-America honors in 1938 and 1939 as a tailback and safety on the Tennessee football team. After coaching stints at Furman, Wyoming and Arkansas, Cafego landed an assistant coaching position at Tennessee in 1966, in charge of tailbacks and defensive backs. He also worked as head baseball coach at the school in 1955 and 1961. Cafego is best known for his work with kickers and punters. After retiring in 1984, he consulted with several National Football League teams about their kicking games. A 1969 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame, Cafego also has been inducted into the Tennessee and West Virginia Halls of Fame.
Former North Carolina-Pembroke athletics director, head men's basketball coach and golf coach Lacey Gane died February 10 in Lumberton, North Carolina. He was 71. Gane was a three-season starter for the Elon basketball team before graduating in 1951. After coaching on the high-school level for several years, Gane moved to North Carolina-Pembroke in 1965, where he worked as both the athletics director and head men's basketball coach. In 10 years coaching the basketball team, Gane compiled a 169-108 record, making him the school's most-victorious coach. Gane also directed the school's golf squad three times -- 1967-70, 1976-84 and 1991-95. For his coaching efforts, Gane was the recipient of NAIA district coach-of-the-year honors in 1973 for basketball and in 1976 for golf. He retired as athletics director in 1984.
James G. Barratt, former golf coach and athletics director at Oregon State, died February 15 in Corvallis. He was 72. After graduating from what was then Oregon State College in 1950, Barratt became the school's assistant alumni director and editor of the alumni magazine. In 1951, he was appointed assistant athletics director, business manager and golf coach. Barratt became AD in 1966 and he held that position until his resignation in 1975. He entered private business a year later. Barratt is an 1985 inductee into the Athletics Directors' Hall of Fame and was elected to the Oregon State Hall of Fame in October 1997.
Former Utah State football standout Lionel Aldridge died recently at the age of 56. After a successful collegiate career, Aldridge played professional football with the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League. In recent years, Aldridge had worked as an advocate for the mentally ill.
