Sixty-nine soccer teams receive Team Academic Awards

Sixty-nine NCAA soccer teams have been named recipients of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's third annual Team Academic Award.

The award recognizes teams' academic performance during the calendar year. To be eligible, a team must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.000 or higher (4.000 scale) for the year. Only athletes who appear on the official NCAA squad list for soccer for fall 1997 are eligible in calculating the grade-point average.

Men's teams from Adelphi, Bucknell and Harvard earned the award for a third consecutive year along with women's teams from Case Reserve, Connecticut and New Mexico.

The NSCAA also announced its first men's and women's Scholar-Athletes of the Year. They are Saint Louis midfielder Kevin Quigley and Montana midfielder Courtney Mathieson.

The award honors the top male and female collegiate soccer player based on academic and athletics performance. They head the NSCAA men's and women's Scholar-Athlete All-America Teams.

Quigley led the Billikens to the Division I semifinals this year and was named a third-team NSCAA/Umbro all-American for his performance on the field.

Mathieson, who started and played in all 21 of Montana's games this season, scored nine goals and eight assists. She scored 43 career goals and had 26 assists in 75 games.

The individual and team awards were presented at the NSCAA's annual convention January 14-18 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
