San Francisco nets Noble to head volleyball

New Mexico State head women's volleyball coach David Noble has been named head women's coach at San Francisco.

Prior to his one-year stint at New Mexico State, during which he piloted the team to its first berth in the Big West Conference tournament, Noble worked as an assistant coach at UC Santa Barbara. His responsibilities there included recruiting, game preparation and coaching. In 1990, he was tapped as interim head women's coach at his alma mater, UC Santa Cruz. He led the team to a 16-14 mark after the program had compiled a 15-36 record in two previous years.

Noble also has coached both boys and girls on the high-school level and served in 1993 as assistant coach for the USA Youth National boys' and girls' team. He is founder and from 1993 to 1995 served as head coach of Team NIKE, a USA Volleyball boys' under-18 club team that won the 1995 USA Junior Olympic National Championship.

Noble also is a published author of several volleyball articles.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Executive Vice-President Andrew Westmoreland appointed president at Ouachita Baptist, succeeding Ben M. Elrod, who was named chancellor of the school ... Larry R. Faulkner, provost at Illinois, selected as president at Texas ... Marvin L. Yates, chancellor at Southern University, will resign, effective in June.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

John G. Watson tapped as athletics director at Pepperdine. Watson, currently faculty athletics representative and tenured professor of education at the school, replaces Wayne Wright, who retired December 31 ... Barry appointed Mike Covone athletics director. He succeeds G. Jean Cerra, who was promoted to associate vice president for academic services at the school. Covone coached women's soccer at the school for 11 years and has most recently served the institution as executive associate athletics director.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORSOF ATHLETICS

West Virginia selected Terri Weimer Howes as assistant athletics director for sports development. A member of the Wyoming athletics staff since 1989, Howes served there most recently as associate athletics director for student services and senior woman administrator ... UC San Diego assistant athletics director Marilyn Hill will retire after 17 years, effective February 1.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORSOF ATHLETICSSan

Larry Leckonby appointed senior associate athletics director at Houston. Leckonby has been associate director of athletics for business affairs at Boston College for the past 41Ž2 years ... Kevin Kyle selected as associate athletics director responsible for marketing and fund-raising at his alma mater, McNeese State. Kyle has held the position of director of athletics public affairs at Kent for the past six years.

SENIOR WOMANADMINISTRATOR

Oral Roberts hired Veronica Trujillo as senior woman administrator. Trujillo, who has been an athletics academic counselor at Oklahoma, will also assume duties as director of athletics academic services at the school.

COACHES

Men's basketball--Terry Connor selected as interim head coach at Thomas More, replacing Larry Cox, who is initiating a men's basketball program at College of Mount St. Joseph. Connor currently works as junior varsity and assistant varsity baseball coach and history teacher at the high-school level.

Football assistants--Vince Marino promoted from assistant coach to offensive coordinator at Holy Cross. Marino, who is in this third year at the school, coached running backs last season ... Kent named Greg Colby defensive coordinator, Frank Kurth offensive line coach and Ron Wright defensive line coach. Colby coached the defensive line and outside linebackers at Michigan State for two seasons and Kurth comes from Indiana, where he has coached running backs, quarterbacks and wide receivers. Wright has been assistant head coach, defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at West Georgia since 1987 ... Dick Winder appointed assistant coach at Texas Tech where he had served as assistant coach and offensive coordinator from 1984 to 1995. Winder has been offensive coordinator at Oklahoma for the last two years.

Men's and women's soccer--Redlands hired Suzette Soboti as head women's coach. She succeeds Anthony O'Neil, who will continue to coach men's soccer. Soboti has been head women's soccer coach at Middlesex County College since April 1994. She also will serve as head women's lacrosse coach and a member of the teaching faculty at the school ... George Fotopoulos tapped at his alma mater to serve as head coach of Tampa's new varsity women's soccer program, which is expected to begin play this fall. Fotopoulos has been assistant men's soccer coach at the school for the past two years ... Rick Benben appointed head coach at Missouri-Kansas City. Benben replaces Mike Brown, who resigned after a five-year stint to assume a post with the Missouri Youth Soccer Association.

Women's softball--North Carolina-Pembroke selected Denise Renfro as head softball coach. Renfro, who has served as softball coach and assistant athletics director at Fayetteville Academy (North Carolina) for the past seven years, replaces Melanie Grooms, who resigned.

STAFF

Assistant athletic trainer--Trischelle Morgan named certified assistant athletic trainer at Saint Joseph's (Indiana), where she succeeds Tony Sharpe, who accepted a position as a trainer with Kroger Company.

Fund-raising assistant--Houston selected Katina Jackson as assistant director for annual giving. Jackson has served as a member of the Houston Athletics Foundation Board of Directors for the past two years.

Marketing manager--Jim Bast appointed marketing manager for women's athletics at Texas, replacing Lauren Greenwade, who accepted a marketing/media sales post with Universal Studios in Los Angeles. After a five-year stint as assistant general manager and account executive with Phoenix Firebirds Triple A professional baseball club, Bast served as director of operations and senior account executive with the Austin Ice Bats during that team's inaugural season in 1996.

Marketing and promotions coordinator--Wisconsin-Parkside tapped Christopher Dose as athletics marketing and promotions coordinator.

Sports information directors--Samford hired Matt Sullivan as women's sports information director. Sullivan has served as a graduate assistant in the Southeastern Louisiana sports information office for two years ... Michael Carpenter, sports information director at Thiel since 1996, given additional duties as assistant director of information services at the school.

Sports information assistant--John A. Martin selected as assistant sports information director at Detroit. Martin, who has worked as a sports information intern at the school since 1996, replaces Ken Lasky, who resigned to pursue other career opportunities.

Strength and conditioning coordinator--Bradley named Jeff Macy strength and conditioning coordinator. He succeeds Tom Boyd, who became head strength coach at Kentucky. Macy has worked as a USA Weightlifting club instructor since March 1996 and owns Macy Sports and Fitness Center in Peoria, Illinois.

The Sun Belt Conference appointed Michael G. Blalock supervisor of volleyball officials.

Wright Waters, commissioner of the Southern Conference, resigned, effective January 31. He plans to pursue a private business opportunity. Waters assumed the commissioner's post in July 1991 after a three-year stint as assistant commissioner. In addition to serving as a member of the NCAA Executive Committee, Waters increased sports sponsorships and guided the conference through two expansions to bring its total membership to 12.


Notables

Eastern Kentucky head football coach Roy Kidd elected president of the American Football Coaches Association during the organization's 1998 convention in Dallas. He succeeds Don Nehlen of West Virginia.

American Football Coaches Association coach-of-the-year award recipients are: Division I-A, Lloyd Carr, Michigan; Division I-AA, Andy Talley, Villanova; Division II, Joe Glenn, Northern Colorado; and Division III, Larry Kehres, Mount Union.

Winners of the inaugural assistant-coach-of-the-year honors awarded by the American Football Coaches Association are: Division I-A, Alan Gooch, running backs coach, Central Florida; Division I-AA, Alonzo Lee, defensive coordinator, Hampton; Division II, Richard Cundiff, defensive coordinator, Texas A&M-Kingsville; and Division III, Roland Christensen, defensive coordinator, Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Kevin Quigley, senior midfielder at Saint Louis, and Courtney Mathieson, senior midfielder at Montana, received the first-ever National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar Athlete of the Year awards. Quigley helped his team to a berth in the Division I semifinals this year and was named a third-team NSCAA/Umbro all-American. Mathieson started and played in all 21 games during the season and earned GTE Academic All-America recognition last year.


Deaths

Veteran college baseball umpire Ken Kirby died January 5. He was 72. Kirby, who also officiated football, basketball and softball, umpired games in the Big Ten and Wisconsin State University Conferences for 30 years. He worked one NCAA College World Series and officiated in 21 Major League Baseball games during the 1979 umpires' strike.

Former Rutgers head football coach and Columbia assistant football coach and player John Bateman died recently. As an undergraduate at Columbia, Bateman served as cocaptain of the football team in 1937, and later served as assistant coach for 10 years.
