Dorenkamp named AD at Central (Iowa)

Al Dorenkamp has been named athletics director at his alma mater, Central (Iowa), effective in mid-July. He succeeds interim athletics director John Edwards.

Dorenkamp, currently principal at Carroll (Iowa) High School, has coached and taught at the high-school and secondary school levels. Collegiately, he was a graduate assistant football coach at South Dakota. He also coached at Denison, netting coach-of-the-year honors three times in five years and district coach-of-the-year honors once.

Dorenkamp worked as a sales manager at Rubber Development, Inc., for two years before accepting the principal's post at Carroll.

As a student-athlete at Central, Dorenkamp served as team captain and captured all-America recognition at linebacker in 1974 as the school captured its first Division III Football Championship.

Dorenkamp holds a master's degree in educational administration from South Dakota.


GENERAL

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Thiel promoted interim athletics director Dave Armstrong to athletics director. Armstrong, who has been at the school since February 1996, will retain his position as head football coach.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Thiel head women's volleyball and softball coach J. Lynn Trimble promoted to assistant athletics director after serving as interim assistant AD. Trimble, who was named senior woman administrator in 1991, also has served as assistant sports information director at the school ... Kelly Groddy named assistant athletics director at Ball State. Groddy, who also will serve as the athletics department's director of student services and assist with marketing and promotions initiatives, worked as a title examiner for ATI Title/Norwest Banks in Kansas City, Missouri, last year and served as an assistant commissioner of the Mid-American Conference during the 1995-96 academic year.

COACHES

Baseball--Nebraska released head coach John Sanders.

Men's basketball assistant--Al Rabenold tapped as assistant coach at Grinnell.

Women's basketball--Debbie Taneyhill, associate coach for the past three years at George Mason, named interim head coach at the school for the remainder of the season. Taneyhill replaces Jim Lewis, who resigned after 14 years as head coach to pursue other opportunities ... Assistant coach Frank McQuade selected as interim head coach at Aurora, succeeding Julie Sexton, who resigned. McQuade, who will head the program through the remainder of the season, served as an assistant softball coach during the 1997 season and also works as assistant volleyball coach.

Women's basketball assistants--Michelle Raymer selected as assistant coach at Grinnell ... Deana Bahhur named graduate assistant at Akron for the remainder of the 1997-98 season.

Football--Jerry Graybeal named head coach at Weber State. Graybeal, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Eastern Washington for 16 years, succeeds Dave Arslanian, who accepted the head coaching post at Utah State ... St. Francis (Pennsylvania) tapped Kevin Doherty as head football coach.

Football assistants--Brent Guy selected as defensive coordinator at Boise State ... UCLA named Nick Aliotti as defensive coordinator. Aliotti has served as an assistant coach for the National Football League's St. Louis Rams for three seasons and replaces Rocky Long, who assumed the head coaching position at New Mexico ... Massachusetts appointed Keith Dudzinski as defensive line coach, Mark Michaels as linebackers coach and Mike Cassano as secondary coach. All three most recently coached at Brown. Dudzinski served as defensive line coach for four years while Michaels, who coached the defensive secondary in 1994, has coached linebackers for the last three seasons. Cassano was assistant running backs coach for one season ... Larry Petroff named assistant coach at Southern California ... Northeast Louisiana assistant coach Bill Shimek retired ... Vince Hrasky selected for assistant coaching duties at Grinnell.

Men's soccer--Perry Nizzi appointed head coach at Hamilton ... Long Island-C. W. Post announced that Bill Easteadt will assume interim head coaching responsibilities during head coach Paul Riley's one-year leave of absence. Danny Longo and Mike Longo will serve as interim assistant coaches.

Men's and women's swimming and diving--Derek Fimmen named diving coach at Grinnell.

Men's and women's track and field assistant--UC Irvine hired Jim VanHootegem as assistant track and field/cross country coach, succeeding Gwen Loud-Johnson, who resigned. VanHootegem, who will coach sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers, served as an assistant track coach at Texas-Pan American during the past year.

A. Marvin Allen and Howard R. DeNike selected as 1998 inductees into the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame. Allen, who as a club player in 1938 scored the first goal in North Carolina soccer history, served as the founding coach for the men's soccer team at the school. He served through the 1976 season and finished with an overall record of 174-81-23. DeNike, creator of the first soccer scorebook in 1935, played collegiately at East Stroudsburg in 1929. From 1930 to 1955, DeNike served as head coach at the school, compiling a record of 94-54-28, including four undefeated seasons. In addition to soccer, DeNike coached track and men's and women's swimming and also was dean of men students and director of men's intramurals during his tenure at the institution. Additionally, he worked as a referee for several years and was appointed third vice-president at the founding meeting of the NSCAA in 1941.

Winners of the AT&T Long Distance Awards for college basketball games played through December 31 are: Three-point field goals per game -- Division I men, William Fourche, Southern University, 4.5; Division II men, Reece Gliko, Montana State-Billings, 4.8; Division III men, Jeff Clement, Grinnell, 5.1; Division I women, Brenna Doty, Buffalo, 3.5. Three-point field goal percentage--Division I men, Kent McCausland, Iowa, 52.2; Division II men, Adam Harness, Oakland City, 57.4; Division III men, Andy Strommen, Chicago, 49.9; Division I women, Chrissy Roberts, Eastern Kentucky, 48.8.


Deaths

Former North Carolina football coach and Connecticut athletics director Jim Hickey died December 27. He was 77. Hickey, a tailback at William and Mary in the early 1940s, coached from 1951 to 1955 at Hampden-Sydney, where he netted two conference championships before mov-ing to North Carolina, where he initially worked as backfield coach in 1956. Hickey was head coach at the school from 1959 to 1966, a tenure that included a 1963 Gator Bowl victory. Hickey, who resigned his post at North Carolina after the 1966 season, also worked as athletics director at Connecticut for three years.
