Torres, Parlow top coaches' soccer all-Americans list
Herman Award winners Johnny Torres of Creighton and Cindy Parlow of national champion North Carolina headline the 1997 National Soccer Coaches Association of America/UMBRO all-America teams.
Torres, a standout forward, has led Creighton to four Division I Men's Soccer Championship appearances and one third-place finish during his career. Parlow, a three-time all-American, scored the game-winning goal in North Carolina's 2-0 championship-game victory over Connecticut and has helped the Tar Heels claim the last two championships.
North Carolina also placed sophomore midfielder Laurie Schwoy on the first team while three other players, Nel Fettig, Robin Confer and Staci Wilson, earned second-team recognition.
Division I men's champion UCLA placed forward Seth George on the second team. George scored both goals in the Bruins' 2-0 championship-game victory over Virginia and was named the tournament's most outstanding offensive player.
Virginia midfielder Ben Olsen was a first-team selection and junior Matt Chulis earned a spot on the second-team.
In Division II, men's champion Cal State Bakersfield placed senior forward Joe Munoz on the first team, while women's champion Franklin Pierce was represented by two-time all-Americans Pauliina Miettinen and Pauliina Auveri.
The Division III team includes forwards Eric Brown and Robert Mauw of men's champion Wheaton (Illinois) and Lauren Johnson of women's champion UC San Diego.
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the UMBRO soccer merchandising company jointly announced the teams.
