Lucido to lead lacrosse at Susquehanna

Susquehanna has selected Gina Lucido as head women's lacrosse coach. Lucido replaces Nancy Billger, who closed a two-season stint with a 6-16 record.

Lucido served as an assistant field hockey coach and women's lacrosse coach from 1995 to 1997 at Bucknell. Since 1996, she has coordinated a skills program and coached more than 150 players in game skills with the Futures Program of the United States Field Hockey Association.

An athletics and academic College Field Hockey Coaches Association all-American as a senior at Ball State, Lucido participated on two MAC title-winning teams before graduating with a bachelor of arts in musical theater in 1995. She earned a master of science from Bucknell in 1997.

Lucido will continue to serve as an assistant field hockey coach at Susquehanna, a post she held last fall.

Scott S. Cowen appointed president at Tulane. Cowen was dean of the school of management at Case Western Reserve ... Rev. E. Edward Kinerk, former provincial of Jesuits of the Missouri Province in Kansas City, Missouri, named president at Rockhurst, effective June 1 ... John E. Weems announced his retirement as president at Meredith, effective June 1999.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Boston College promoted Jim Paquette to assistant athletics director for development. Paquette has been athletics development assistant at the school for three years ... Dennis Byers named assistant director for development at James Madison ... La Salle tapped Pete D'Orazio as assistant athletics director.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Melissa A. Manus hired at Southern Vermont. Manus will also serve as head athletic trainer at the school.

COACHES

Baseball--Rich Martin appointed head coach at Mercyhurst. Martin replaces Joe Jordano, who took the head baseball coaching post at Pittsburgh.

Baseball assistants--South Florida named Bryan Peters assistant baseball coach ... Mike Francese selected as assistant baseball coach at Manhattan.

Men's basketball-- Frank Harrell, currently Tennessee Tech's second most victorious basketball coach, will step down at the end of the season after 10 years as head coach. Harrell will continue at the school as compliance officer.

Men's basketball assistant--La Salle promoted Joe Mihalich to associate head men's coach.

Women's basketball--Frank J. Cacckello named head women's basketball coach at Southern Vermont. Cacckello has been head coach of an AAU girls' team in Albany, New York.

Women's basketball assistant--Southern Vermont appointed Dale Corbett to a second year as assistant coach.

Field hockey--Five-year Salem State head coach Heidi Begin resigned to spend more time with her family ... Scranton named Brenda Brewer head coach. Brewer, who has been an assistant coach at the school for three years, succeeds Beth Howlett.

Football--Northern Arizona head coach Steve Axman resigned ... Ron Dickerson selected as head coach at Alabama State. Dickerson, who previously coached at Temple, replaces Houston Markham, who was released ... Phil Estes tapped as head coach at Brown, replacing Mark Whipple, who assumed the head football coaching post at Massachusetts. Since joining the Brown staff in 1994, Estes has served as recruiting coordinator and has coached receivers and running backs. Whipple, who coached at Brown for four years, replaces Mike Hodges, who resigned at Massachusetts ... Missouri Southern State selected Gordon Gregory as head coach ... Dennis Roland hired as head coach at Southwest Baptist, replacing Wayne Haynes, who resigned. Roland has been head coach and athletics director at Middle Georgia since 1993 ... North Alabama named Bill Hyde head coach. Hyde, who has been defensive coordinator at the school for 17 years, succeeds Bobby Wallace, who was appointed head coach at Temple ... Mike McClure, head coach at Franklin since 1989, stepped down to assume the position of acting director of alumni services at the school ... Paul Hackett selected as head coach at Southern California. Hackett, who is offensive coordinator for the National Football League's Kansas City Chiefs, succeeds John Robinson, who was released ... Andy Frye, associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Centre, selected as head coach at the school. Frye succeeds 18-year veteran Joe McDaniel, who compiled the most football wins in school history, finishing with a 101-63-3 record. McDaniel will serve as assistant athletics director and a member of the physical education faculty at the school ... Fort Hays State hired Jeff Leiker as head coach. Leiker, who replaces Bob Cortese, was offensive coordinator at Missouri Western State last season ... Texas Christian tapped Dennis Franchione as head coach. Franchione, who most recently served as head coach at New Mexico for six years, succeeds Pat Sullivan, who resigned after six seasons ... Dennis Czech appointed head coach at his alma mater, Macalester. Czech, who has worked in the Minneapolis/St. Paul business community since 1984, was running backs coach at the school last season ... Kent selected Dean Pees, defensive coordinator at Michigan State, as head coach. Pees replaces Jim Corrigall, whose contract was not renewed after four years in which he compiled a record of 8-35-1.

Football assistants--Paul Gorham named recruiting coordinator and offensive line coach at Massachusetts after a four-year stint as offensive line coach at Brown. Also, Don Brown selected as defensive coordinator at Massachusetts. Brown was defensive coordinator at Brown for two years ... Alabama tapped Jackie Shipp as defensive line coach ... Kent added Randy Bates and Michael Drake to its staff. Bates has coached linebackers at New Hampshire since 1992 and Drake served as recruiting coordinator and coached running backs and the punt team at Kentucky from 1995 to 1996.

Women's lacrosse--Caitlin Roberts named head coach at New England College ... Sacred Heart appointed Elizabeth Patterson head coach. Patterson served as assistant field hockey coach at Salve Regina this past fall and replaces Robin Schwartz, who has been head coach since the program's first season in 1993.

Men's lacrosse assistant--Mark Petrone selected as offensive coordinator at Franklin & Marshall.

Men's and women's skiing--New England College tapped Rob Quinn as head coach of the Alpine ski team.

Men's and women's soccer--Christian Brothers named Gareth O'Sullivan as head men's and women's soccer coach. O'Sullivan, who piloted the school's men's soccer team through its 1997 campaign, succeeds Jack Schenkel. Schenkel will serve as head coach of men's and women's cross country and men's tennis as well as assume administrative duties within the athletics department ... Christine Rizzieri selected as head women's soccer coach at Florida Southern, where she will also serve as an assistant professor in the physical education department. Rizzieri most recently coached at Le Moyne for 14 years and served as director of physical education ... Doug Harris resigned after five years as head men's soccer coach at Franklin & Marshall, citing personal reasons. Chris Shinn, who has been head coach at Aurora for six seasons, replaces Harris ... Dave Sarachan resigned as head men's coach at Cornell to assume an assistant coach position with Major League Soccer's DC United ... Coastal Carolina tapped Shaun Docking as head men's soccer coach. Docking has been head coach at Charleston Southern for two seasons ... Larry Foster selected as head women's coach at Idaho ... North Carolina State hired Laura Kerrigan as head women's coach ... Central Oklahoma named Mike Cook as head women's coach for the program's first varsity season in 1998. Cook has been head men's and women's coach at Southern Nazarene for five years, compiling a combined record of 136-57.

Women's softball--Kelly Halverson selected as head coach at Milwaukee School of Engineering. Halverson is an instructor in the general studies department at the school ... Luanna Harris tapped as coach at Southern Mississippi. The program's inaugural season is slated for 1999.

Women's softball assistant--Baylor hired Jodi Burch as pitching coach. Burch had been working in the legal field and also facilitating pitching clinics.

Men's and women's track and field--Don Stupica, men's track and field coach at John Carroll, resigned.

Men's and women's track and field assistants--Stevens Tech selected the following assistant coaches: Greg Morriello, Mike Morriello, James Ortmann and Shawn Carson.

Women's volleyball--Geri Polvino resigned as head coach at Eastern Kentucky after 31 seasons. Polvino, who will continue as a professor in the school's College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics, finishes her collegiate coaching career with an 627-439 overall record ... Dallas hired Venera Flores as head women's volleyball coach. Flores replaces interim coach Rachelle Leonard, who will continue as head women's basketball coach at the school ... Staten Island women's volleyball coach Russ Robinson resigned.

Men's water polo--Don Benson stepped down as head coach at Harvard after four seasons to focus on his duties as histo- ry teacher and boys' swimming coach at Chelmsford (Massachusetts) High School ... Pacific (California) named Courtney Porter as men's water polo coach.

Wrestling assistant--Christopher Faris named assistant coach at Roger Williams.

STAFF

Media relations director--Bruce Ludlow, assistant sports information director at Northeast Louisiana for four years, named director of media relations for the Southland Conference. Ludlow succeeds Tommy Newsom, who resigned to pursue other career opportunities.

Sports information directors--Bruce Wald, sports information director at California (Pennsylvania) since 1985, selected as information writer at the university. John Leith, sports information graduate assistant, was appointed interim main contact in sports information ... Gordon Woodworth appointed interim sports information director at Vermont.

CONVENTION

The National Association of Sports Officials will conduct the 17th National Convention of Sports Officials July 18-22, 1998. Officials from national and international locations will converge in Indianapolis to participate in general sessions, leadership programs, sport-specific training, the association's annual meeting and the Gold Whistle Award banquet.

AGREEMENTS

The Texas men's and women's athletics departments, Fox Sports Southwest, and University Sports America Collegiate L.P. announced a five-year, multimedia rights agreement.

CORRECTION

The school where Giovanni Carmazzi plays football was reported incorrectly in the NCAA Record section of the December 15 issue of The NCAA News. Carmazzi is quarterback at Hofstra.


Notables

Mount Union senior quarterback Bill Borchert netted the 1997 Melberger Award as the NCAA Division III player of the year. Borchert, who lead Mount Union to its second straight Division III national championship, is the first two-time recipient of the award presented by the Downtown Wilkes-Barre Touchdown Club ... Cindy Parlow, junior forward at North Carolina, and Johnny Torres, senior forward at Creighton, selected as Missouri Athletic Club Sports Foundation Collegiate Soccer Players of the Year. Parlow and Torres also were winners of the 1997 Hermann Trophy, awarded to the outstanding collegiate soccer players in North America and presented by FILA USA ... Luther distance runner Turena Johnson named recipient of the Honda Award as the NCAA Division III Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. Johnson holds 17 cross country individual championships and reigns as champion in the 10,000-meter run and indoor and outdoor 5,000-meter runs ... Tut Bartzen, head men's tennis coach at Texas Christian for 25 years, named ninth recipient of the Rolex Meritorious Service Award presented by the Intercollegiate Tennis Assocication ... Senior striker Robin Confer of North Carolina and junior striker Ben Olsen of Virginia named 1997 College Players of the Year by Soccer News ... Ohio State's Andy Katzenmoyer netted the Butkus Award, presented annually by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, as the top linebacker in college football. Katzenmoyer was the second sophomore to receive the award in its 31-year history ... The first recipient of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame's John L. Toner Award is the honor's namesake, John L. Toner. Toner, who was athletics director at Connecticut from 1969 to 1987, also coached football at the school and served as NCAA president from 1983 to 1985.


Deaths

Hubert Anderson Jr., former head basketball coach at Gallaudet, died November 29. He was 59. Anderson was executive director of the West Virginia Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Glenn Warner, Navy soccer coach for 27 years, died December 21. He was 87. Warner, a two-time all-American at Springfield, coached Maryland to an 8-0-1 mark in 1941. Warner moved to an assistant coaching post at Navy in 1942. Named head coach at the school in 1946, Warner compiled a 243-65-31 record and netted a national championship in 1964. He was a 1992 inductee into the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame.
