Super Show set for February 5-8

Those who are looking for that perfect stocking-stuffer for athletically inclined friends or family might want to consider some of the merchandise that will be on exhibit at Super Show/98, the world's largest sports product trade show.

Among the items to be seen at the February 5-8 show in Atlanta:

  • The Rawlings Radar Ball -- The first baseball that measures the speed it's thrown for the distance at which it is calibrated and displays it on a liquid crystal display for the pitcher to get immediate feedback.

  • Musical Pen -- A musical ball-point pen for colleges and universities. The barrel and cap match the school colors, and when you click the barrel, it plays the school's fight song.

  • Team Toad -- Similar in function to the Musical Pen, the Team Toad is a university toad that "croaks" his team's fight song when his foot is squeezed.

The Super Show will be attended by more than 3,000 sporting goods manufacturers, retailers, distributors and journalists. It will feature more than 10,000 booths in 2.4 million square feet of show space.

    Can you top this?

Jim Hoffman, sports information director at St. Francis College (New York), wants to know if any other women's basketball team has accomplished what the St. Francis team did December 10.

On that night, in a 64-49 win over Quinnipiac College, all three members of St. Francis' starting front line (Christine Taps, Melissa Gialanella, Carolyn Harvey) registered point/rebound double-doubles.

Hoffman wants to know if that has happened in any other women's basketball games. Anybody possessing such information may contact him at 718/489-5489. The fax number is 718/797-2140, and his e-mail address is jwhoffman@usa.net.

    Big win

Prairie View A&M University has had a tough decade athletically, with the worst of it being an active 77-game football losing streak.

Men's basketball has not fared much better over the same period, but the Panthers did get a boost December 2 when they defeated Tulane University, 69-64, in New Orleans. It was Prairie View's first Division I nonconference road win of the decade and was Tulane's first nonconference, home-court loss in five seasons.

Athletics director Clifton Gilliard thought his sports information director was joking with him when he called with the news at about 11 p.m.

"My son told me that Staffan (Robinson) had called and said we had won. I thought they were pulling my leg. I think I yelled, 'Yow!' "

Gilliard said the win should serve notice that Prairie View isn't giving up.

"This lets people know we're putting forth an effort and not just sitting back and letting the program wither on a vine," he said.
