Lake Lanier Islands chosen as 1998 rowing championships site
The NCAA Women's Rowing Committee has chosen the Lake Lanier Islands -- located northeast of Atlanta in Gainesville, Georgia -- as the site for the 1998 National Collegiate Women's Rowing Championships.
The event will be May 29-31, 1998. The University of Central Florida and the Lake Lanier Rowing Club will host the event.
Eight institutions will be selected to compete in the team competition and must enter all three events -- the first team eights, second team eights and the fours. An additional eight boats will be selected for the first team eights event and for the fours event from colleges and universities that are not selected for the team competition.
"This is our second NCAA Women's Rowing Championships and we are delighted that Lake Lanier will serve as the site this championship," said committee chair Barbara N. Chesler, Yale University. "We are proud to be able to showcase some of the greatest collegiate athletes in rowing on this exceptional rowing course and the site of the 1996 Olympic Games."
The rowing venue at Lake Lanier is a 38-year-old, man-made lake about 51 miles from Atlanta that served as the rowing site of the 1996 Olympic Games. Lake Lanier was also the site of the 1995 U.S. Rowing Nationals. It is hosting the NCAA championships for the first time.
