Tietjen to succeed Byers at Evansville

Laura Tietjen, senior associate athletics director at Evansville, has been named to succeed James Byers as athletics director when he retires next May.

Tietjen has held her current position since May 1997 and was associate AD for two years before that.

Tietjen joined Evansville from Nebraska-Kearney, where she was assistant AD for eligibility, compliance and student support. She earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1981 from Nebraska, where she was a member of the women's basketball team. Tietjen received the 1980 Harmon Award as the Cornhuskers' outstanding female athlete.

Tietjen taught and coached at the high-school level before joining the Nebraska-Kearney staff as coach and instructor in 1986. She was promoted to administrative assistant/compliance coordinator in 1990 and to assistant AD in 1993. While at Nebraska-Kearney, Tietjen earned a master's degree in education.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Rear Admiral Thomas Matteson, superintendent at Merchant Marine, will retire June 30, 1998 ... Michele Tolela Myers, president at Denison, appointed president at Sarah Lawrence effective August 1, 1998. Myers served on the NCAA Presidents Commission.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOROF ATHLETICS

Laurie Turner named associate athletics director at Toledo.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORSOF ATHLETICS

Brad Hurlbut promoted to assistant athletics director for media services at Northwestern. Hurlbut has been media services director for the past two years ... Dominic "Dom" Perno appointed assistant AD for athletics development at George Washington. Perno was head men's basketball coach at Connecticut from 1977 to 1986 and later served as a color analyst for the Big East Conference television network. He has been employed for the past 10 years by the Dumont Group of Bristol, Connecticut, in insurance sales and marketing.

COACHES

Baseball assistants--Joe Ross, an assistant baseball coach at Washington for the past six years, promoted to associate head coach at the university ... John Flanders hired as pitching coach at Stonehill. He was a pitching coach at Salem State.

Men's basketball--Bill Guthridge given a five-year contract as head coach at North Carolina. Guthridge was named head coach in October after serving as assistant coach for 30 years. The contract runs through 2002 ... Dayton extended the contract of Oliver Purnell for two years, through the 2001-02 season.

Men's basketball assistants--Scott Dion hired as assistant coach at Clark (Massachusetts). He was a member of the men's basketball team at Bryant before graduating in 1996 ... Al Rabenold, a high-school coach for 20 years, named assistant coach at Grinnell.

Men's basketball assistants--George Johnson and Dan Mascia hired at Long Island-C. W. Post.

Women's basketball assistants--Mary Kelleher given additional duties as assistant women's basketball coach at Clark (Massachusetts). Kelleher has been head coach of the women's lacrosse club team at Clark for the past three years ... Kerri Davis hired as assistant coach at Russell Sage ... Stephanie Clark named assistant coach at Millsaps.

Field hockey--Ritika Bowry appointed head coach at Babson after serving as interim coach this fall. Bowry also will be head women's lacrosse coach.

Football--Ron Cooper released as head coach at Louisville. Cooper, who had two years remaining on a five-year contract, guided the Cardinals to a 1-10 record this season. He had a 13-20 record in three years at Louisville ... Northeast Louisiana gave a multiyear contract extension to head coach Ed Zaunbrecher. The length of the extension was not disclosed. Zaunbrecher has posted a 14-30 record since the Indians were reclassified in Division I-A in 1994 ... Ron Dickerson resigned after his fifth season as head coach at Temple. He compiled an 8-47 record as coach of the Owls ... Jackie Sherrill, head coach at Mississippi State, given a contract extension through the 2001 season. Sherrill has been head coach at the university for the past seven seasons ... Kentucky signed head coach Hal Mumme to a new five-year contract.

Football assistant--Francis Amar hired at Swarthmore.

Women's golf--Julie Garner, head coach at Rollins, resigned to become product line manager for Nike. Garner was head coach from 1984 to 1987 and then rejoined the staff in August 1996.

Women's lacrosse--Ritika Bowry named head coach at Babson, where she also will serve as head field hockey coach. She has been interim head field hockey coach this fall.

Men's soccer--John Pfitsch, head coach at Grinnell for the past 24 seasons, announced his retirement. He compiled a 191-118-24 record during his tenure at Grinnell, where he also has served as basketball coach and athletics director.

Women's softball--Amy Tenute, former softball standout at Moorhead State, named interim head coach at Carleton. She has been a volunteer assistant at Michigan State and coached at the high-school level ... JoAnn Krueger, former assistant coach at St. Norbert, hired as head coach at the college. She was an assistant in 1994 and 1995 at St. Norbert and most recently has coached at the high-school level ... J. T. Schrage, head coach at Northeastern Illinois, resigned.

Women's swimming and diving--Garland O'Keefe named head coach of the women's swimming and diving team at St. Bonaventure. She has been been associate coach for the men's and women's swimming programs at Villanova since August 1996.

Men's and women's tennis--Ithaca announced the resignation of Tim Faulkner, men's and women's tennis coach ... Steve Chin, women's coach at Long Island-Brooklyn, resigned.

Women's volleyball--Theresa Kathman-Trees, a standout player at Morningside, named head coach at her alma mater. Kathman-Trees succeeds Gail Halink, who resigned after two seasons with the Chiefs. Kathman-Trees has been head coach at Westmar this season ... Lynn Beruldsen, head coach at Long Island-Brooklyn, resigned ... Dave Orren, head coach at St. Thomas (Minnesota), resigned.

STAFF

Marketing director--Ashland named Rob Zinkan as athletics marketing director. He was marketing and promotions assistant for athletics at Northern Kentucky.

Sports information directors--Jamie Hamer, interim sports information director at Tusculum, resigned to become a morning news/sportscaster at WIKQ-WCRV radio in Greeneville, Tennessee. Hamer had been on the sports information staff at his alma mater for the past 21Ž2 years ... Damion Jones rehired as SID at Northeastern Illinois for the remainder of the 1997-98 academic year, succeeding Ian Frink, who became SID at Goucher. Frink resigned due to the university's decision to discontinue intercollegiate athletics at the end of the academic year. Jones previously was SID at the university from September 1996 to June 1997.

CONFERENCES

Ellen Wilson, faculty athletics representative at Ohio Northern, named president of the Ohio Valley Conference, succeeding John Hill, Heidleberg athletics director. Also, Jeanne Arbuckle, assistant AD at Marietta, was named vice-president. Both terms run until fall 1999.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS

Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis has been admitted to the Mid-Continent Conference and will be eligible for championship competition in 1998-99. The university will move to Division I at the conclusion of the current academic year after participating in Division II since 1993.

SEMINAR

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America and Umbro will present the eight annual Men's Soccer Symposium December 13 in Richmond, Virginia. The symposium is scheduled in conjunction with the 1997 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship December 12-14, hosted by Richmond. Clinicians will be Anson Dorrance, head women's soccer coach at North Carolina; Glenn "Mooch" Myernick, head coach of the Colorado Rapids of the Major League Soccer; and Bobby Howe, U.S. Soccer director of coaching. CORRECTIONS

Three members of the Citizenship Through Sports Alliance were not included in a listing of that group's membership that appeared in the November 17 issue of The NCAA News. The associations that were not listed were the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the National Junior College Athletic Association and the Women's National Basketball Association.

Notables

Eight finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy as the NCAA Division II college football player of the year are Cazzie Kosciolek, New Haven quarterback, and Irvin Sigler, Bloomsburg running back, Northeast region; Tracy Bowen, Wingate running back, and Tyrone Westmoreland, Carson-Newman running back, South region; Phillip Moore, North Dakota running back, and Brian Shay, Emporia State running back, Midwest region; and Erik Hartman, Angelo State quarterback, and Conan Smith, New Mexico Highlands running back, West region. The winner will be announced December 12.

Clayton Chapman, fourth commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference, named recipient of the All-American Football Foundation's Asa S. Bushnell Commissioner Award. Chapman has been a member of the ECAC staff since 1971.

Three finalists for the 1997 Butkus Award, presented annually to the best linebacker in college football by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Inc., and Joyner SportsMedicine Institute, are senior Sam Cowart, outside linebacker at Florida State; sophomore Andy Katzenmoyer, linebacker at Ohio State; and senior Kivuusama Mays, middle linebacker at North Carolina. The winner will be announced December 13.

Winners of the NCAA Foundation/AT&T Long Distance Awards for college football games played through the weekend of November 15 are: longest run from scrimmage, 83 yards, James Johnson, Mississippi State vs. Alabama, and Michael Martin, Arizona State vs. Oregon; longest pass play, 82 yards, Tim Rattay to Troy Edwards, Louisiana Tech vs. Southwestern Louisiana; longest punt average (minimum two punts), 53.8 yards on four punts, Brad Hill, Tulane vs. Mississippi; longest punt return, 86 yards, Jacquez Green, Florida vs. South Carolina; longest kickoff return, 100 yards, Nate Terry, West Virginia vs. Temple; and longest field goal, 56 yards, Sebastian Janikowski, Florida State vs. Wake Forest. AT&T contributes $400 weekly in each of the six categories to the NCAA Foundation's Degree-Completion Scholarship Program.


Deaths

Walter Turner, a Florida Atlantic basketball player, collapsed during practice and died October 19. He was 18. He had a genetic condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, according to the medical examiner.
