Nominations sought for leadership conference participants
Nominations are being solicited for student-athletes to attend the 1998 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference May 25-28 in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
Nomination forms for the event, presented by Entergy Corporation, have been mailed from the NCAA national office to 400 institutions in all three membership divisions. The forms were mailed to all Division I members participating in the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program and to 60 institutions each in Divisions II and III, selected randomly.
The first NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference was held last spring.
The conference is intended to provide a forum for America's finest student-athletes to discuss and explore viable solutions to critical issues facing their peers around the country; to enhance their leadership skills; and to promote better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty members and communities.
Each institution is being asked to nominate four student-athletes -- two women and two men, including at least one ethnic minority. Each of the nominees must represent a different sport.
One nominee from each institution will be selected to participate in the leadership conference at the Walt Disney World Resort.
The application deadline is January 30 and nominations must be postmarked no later than that date. Selected student-athletes will be notified March 13.
The nomination form seeks information about each student-athlete being nominated and solicits details about service and leadership activities, academic achievement, and athletics participation. Nominees also are asked to write 200 to 500 words describing how they have demonstrated or supported principles of teamwork and leadership on campus and in the community, and describing how such service has "made a difference."
The nomination form requires the signature of the director of athletics.
Further information about the 1998 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference can be obtained from Lori A. Hendricks, NCAA education outreach program coordinator, at the national office.
