MEN'S BASKETBALL -- All-time Division I head coaching changes
The percentage of Division I institutions changing men's basketball coaches is high this year -- tied for second highest with the 1979 season -- but it is not apparent that the spike represents any sort of trend. The most apparent trend began in 1967, when the percentage of institutions changing coaches jumped to 18 percent. In the 17 seasons before that, the percentage had been at 15 percent or more only twice. In the 31 years since, the percentage has been at or above 15 percent or more 18 times. The year with the greatest frequency was 1987, when 23 percent made changes.

Scholarship committee seeks former winners to serve on panel The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Com-mittee is hoping to identify former postgraduate scholarship winners who are not affiliated with an NCAA institution or conference for possible appointment as a committee member. The term of office for the former scholarship awardee will begin in September 1998. Staff members at member institutions and conferences are encouraged to assist in identifying interested individuals. Individuals interested in being considered for appointment can obtain further information from Julie Quickel, NCAA committee coordinator, at the national office.
GENDER EQUITYEEOC guidelines designed to clarify gender salary issues The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has issued updated guidelines to help higher education institutions and athletics staff members comply with laws governing discrimination in employment on the basis of gender. The guidelines -- Enforcement Guidance on Sex Discrimination in the Compensation of Sports Coaches in Educational Institutions -- were formally adopted by the commission to clarify how the Equal Pay Act of 1963 and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 apply to sex-based differences in compensation of sports coaches. Noting that studies show that the overall pattern of the employment and compensation of coaches at educational institutions still is far from gender-neutral, the EEOC issued the 30-page document to educate institutions. CONVENTIONHHS Secretary Shalala to address Division I delegates U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna E. Shalala will address the role of athletics in higher education in a speech to the Division I membership at the 1998 NCAA Convention in Atlanta.
