Von Schiller coaching era ends at Hamilton
Manfred von Schiller, head men's soccer coach at Hamilton for the past 39 years, is retiring at the end of the 1997 season.
Von Schiller, who compiled a 228-165-30 record at Hamilton, also coached the men's lacrosse team for 36 years before relinquishing those duties before the 1997 season. His lacrosse teams had a .600 winning percentage in his final 20 seasons.
Von Schiller also is a full-time professor in the Hamilton physical education department.
Immediately after graduation from Brockport State in 1959, von Schiller was hired as head soccer coach at Hamilton. His first team finished with a 4-3 mark. His 1979 team posted the best mark in school history, finishing 12-1-1 and earning the Eastern College Athletic Conference Upstate New York championship.
Von Schiller's lacrosse teams reached the ECAC playoffs three times, and his 1982 and 1983 teams finished 13-1 and 12-2, respectively.
GENERAL
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS
Grinnell President Pamela Ferguson announced her resignation effective December 31. After a year's leave, Ferguson will return to the Grinnell mathematics department ... Malcolm Portera appointed president at Mississippi State. Portera was vice-chancellor for external affairs at Alabama ... David Roe, retired brigadier general in the U.S. Air Force, named president at Central (Iowa).
DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Gary Gallup resigned as athletics director at Texas-Pan American to become assistant executive director of the Golden Gloves Association of America. James Langabeer, Texas-Pan American vice-president for business affairs, was named interim AD.
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Tim Fitzpatrick, associate athletics director for development and marketing at Pittsburgh, resigned effective November 30. Fitzpatrick joined the Pittsburgh athletics staff in February 1996 as associate AD for external affairs, overseeing marketing, development and public relations, and ticket operations. He assumed his current responsibilities in April.
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Delise O'Meally, assistant athletics director for internal operations at Morgan State, resigned to become a membership services representative at the NCAA national office. O'Meally also served as compliance director and assistant sports information director during her tenure at Morgan State.
COACHES
Baseball--Dan O'Brien named interim head coach at UC San Diego, succeeding Robert Fletcher, who resigned. O'Brien, who played three seasons for the Tritons from 1993 through 1995, joined the UC San Diego staff in 1995 as assistant baseball coach and then spent the 1996 season as assistant general manager for the Greenville (Mississippi) Bluesmen of the Big South League. He returned to the university as an assistant coach last season.
Baseball assistants--Ryan Coe, a former standout baseball player at Kennesaw State, appointed assistant coach at his alma mater. He spent the past three summers as a player in the Houston Astros organization ... Steve Hucke hired at Wartburg, where he will coach the middle infield and coordinate the college's baseball schools.
Women's basketball--Colleen O'Brien named head coach at Chatham. She has been a high-school coach for the past 14 years.
Women's basketball assistant--David Petroff hired as assistant coach at Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Petroff was manager of the Wisconsin men's basketball team last year.
Men's and women's cross country--Sharon Chiong named head coach at Mills. Chiong has coached at Florida Atlantic and DePauw.
Men's and women's cross country assistants--Steve Bonifer hired as an assistant coach at Montana. Also, Stu Melby will serve as volunteer assistant for the Grizzlies.
Football--Texas Christian head coach Pat Sullivan resigned effective at the end of the 1997 season. Sullivan was named head coach at Texas Christian in January 1992 after 10 years as quarterbacks coach and offensive assistant at Auburn.
Women's lacrosse assistant--Tami Riley appointed assistant coach at James Madison. Riley was an assistant lacrosse coach at Virginia last year.
Women's rowing--Kevin Harris named head coach at Mills. Harris, who was a heavyweight men's coxswain at Navy and George Washington, most recently was novice crew coach at Mount Holyoke.
Women's softball--Elaine Eddy given additional duties as head women's softball coach at Otterbein. Eddy will continue as assistant women's basketball coach, a position she has held since 1992. She succeeds Teri Walter, who relinquished her coaching duties because of additional teaching responsibilities.
Women's swimming and diving--Carol Berendsen appointed head women's swimming coach and aquatics coordinator at Mills.
Men's and women's tennis--Skeeter Carson, head men's and women's coach at West Florida, announced his retirement effective at the conclusion of the spring 1998 season. Carson has been at the West Florida helm for 17 years.
Men's and women's track and field--Marcus Newson, sprints and jumps coach at Wartburg for the past three years, promoted to head men's and women's track coach. He succeeds Steve Johnson, who has been men's and women's cross country and track coach for the past eight years. Johnson will continue as head cross country coach.
Men's and women's track and field assistants--Mike Ramos, full-time assistant track and field coach at Montana for the past eight years, resigned to enter private business. Brian Schweyen, part-time volunteer coach for the past three years at Montana, was named to replace Ramos. The school also named Dennis Black, Stu Melby and Kaipo Wallwork as part-time assistants and Steve Oravetz as a volunteer assistant.
Women's volleyball--Deborah Leszczynski appointed head coach at Chatham. She has coached at the high-school level.
STAFF
Promotions and sales director--Grayson Marshall hired as director of promotions and sales at Jacksonville. Marshall has worked in radio and television in the Jacksonville, Florida, area for the past four years.
Sports information director--Rob Ervin named sports information director at Jacksonville. He has been a sports information assistant at Indiana State.
Sports information assistants--David Dawson hired as assistant sports information director at Kennesaw State ... George Sorensen hired as assistant director of sports information and marketing at Jacksonville.
CONFERENCES
Kathy Noble promoted to associate commissioner of the Big Sky Conference. Noble, a member of the Division I Infractions Appeals Committee and Division I Women's Basketball Committee, has been assistant commissioner for the past two years.
NCAA NATIONAL OFFICE

AGREEMENTS
The Big Ten Conference and CBS Sports agreed to a multiyear contract extension that will have the network broadcasting games involving conference basketball teams through 2006. The initial contract began in 1991 and was to run through 2001. The contract includes men's and women's basketball games.
Notables
Danny Wuerffel, 1996 Heisman Trophy winner from Florida, and Julie Roe, a standout women's basketball player at Millikin, named 1996-97 GTE Academic All-American Team Members of the Year for all sports. Wuerffel was the recipient in the university division (Divisions I-A and I-AA) and Roe earned the honor in the college division (Divisions II and III). Roe was a two-time conference player of the year. Wuerffel becomes the first Heisman winner to be named the nation's top scholar-athlete.
Former Augustana (Illinois) head football coach Bob Reade selected as the 1998 recipient of the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award presented by the American Football Coaches Association. The award, which honors outstanding service in the advancement of the best interests of football, will be presented at the AFCA convention in January.
Deaths
Jimmy Herbert, former world recordholder at 600 meters and 600 yards, died October 23. He was 82. A member of championship relay teams at New York University from 1935 to 1940, Herbert broke the world record for 600 yards in 1938, clocking 1 minute, 11.1 seconds, at Madison Square Garden. He later was court officer for the criminal division of the New York State Supreme Court.
Carl "Tuffy" Ellingsen, who helped lead the Washington State football team to its last Rose Bowl appearance in 1931, died in Spokane, Washington. He was 92. Ellingsen also wrestled and played baseball and basketball at Washington State. After college, he became a coach, teacher and athletics director at Rogers High School in Spokane.
George Katchmer, former head football coach at Millersville, died October 28 at his home in Millersville, Pennsylvania. He was 81. Katchmer retired in 1969 as associate professor of health and physical education at Millersville, where he was head football coach for 16 years.
Richard Baker, an employee of the Vanderbilt athletics department for more than 50 years, died October 20 in Nashville, Tennessee. He was 75. Baker, who worked primarily in the athletics facilities department, worked at Vanderbilt for 56 years and had the longest employment tenure at the university at the time of his death.
