Barrett retires from Massachusetts-Boston

Mary Barrett, associate director of athletics at Massachusetts-Boston since 1982, announced she will retire October 31.

Barrett served on the NCAA Executive Committee from 1992 to 1997 and also served on the NCAA Council and was chair of the Division III Championships Committee.

She was athletics director at Boston State College when it merged with the University of Massachusetts, Boston, in 1982. She joined the Boston State staff in 1967 as an associate professor of education and then moved to the athletics department in 1974.

In 1985, Barrett became the first woman elected president of the Eastern College Athletic Conference and more recently became the first woman named to the board of directors of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame.

As associate AD, Barrett has overseen all aspects of the university's athletics program and has served as compliance officer.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Raymond Hicks relinquished his duties as president at Grambling but will continue in the position while on leave through June 30, 1998. Hicks is returning to the Grambling College of Education as a professor ... Harold Eickhoff, president at College of New Jersey, announced he will retire January 1, 1999 ... David Gilbert announced he will retire as president at Eastern Oregon effective in June 1998 ... James Pomerantz, provost at Brown, named acting president ... Wartburg President Robert Vogel will retire June 30, 1998 ... Larry Monteith, chancellor at North Carolina State, will retire upon selection of his successor.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Robert Krawchuk appointed acting athletics director at Northeastern Illinois. Krawchuk has been assistant AD for business operations since 1992 ... John Suarez named AD at Long Island-Brooklyn.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Lou Henson, associate athletics director at Illinois, named volunteer head men's basketball coach at New Mexico State. Henson had been associate AD since retiring as Illinois' head basketball coach last year ... Nick Floyd appointed senior associate AD at Southern Mississippi ... Villanova named Dave White senior associate AD and Vince Nicastro associate AD ... Margaret Alaimo promoted to senior associate AD at Long Island-Brooklyn. Alaimo has been associate AD for the past five years. Andrew Walker was named to succeed Alaimo as associate AD.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Bill Bryant, assistant athletics director for student affairs at Pittsburgh for the past seven years, hired as director of compliance at William and Mary ... Neil McCarthy, head men's basketball coach at New Mexico State, reassigned as assistant athletics director. McCarthy had been head coach since 1985 ... John Robinson appointed assistant AD at Villanova.

COACHES

Baseball assistants--Eddy Morgan hired as second assistant baseball coach at St. Scholastica. Morgan was the college's starting shortstop from 1995 through 1996 ... Chris Murphy named full-time assistant and Ken Munoz named volunteer assistant at George Mason. Murphy served as a part-time assistant for the past two years. Munoz has been coaching at the high-school level ... Ryan Coe, a former baseball standout at Kennesaw State, hired as an assistant coach at his alma mater.

Men's basketball--Steve Fisher, who led Michigan to the 1989 NCAA Division I title, relieved of his duties at the school. Assistant coach Brian Ellerbee was named interim coach. Fisher became head coach at the start of the 1989 Division I Men's Basketball Championship after serving as assistant coach and led his team to five victories and the title ... Ben Braun, head coach at California, given an eight-year contract extension. Braun led California to a 23-9 record last year in his first season ... Ohio Wesleyan head coach Gene Mehaffey announced he will retire at the end of the 1998-99 season. Mehaffey is set to begin his 30th season as a head coach and his 19th at the Battling Bishop helm. He has a 266-214 record at Ohio Wesleyan and a 508-351 career record ... Neil McCarthy, head coach at New Mexico State, relieved of his coaching duties and reassigned as assistant athletics director. Former head coach and alumnus Lou Henson agreed to become full-time head coach for the upcoming season on a volunteer basis. Henson was head coach at New Mexico State from 1966 to 1975, when he became head coach at Illinois. He has been associate athletics director at Illinois since retiring from coaching last year. McCarthy had been head coach since 1985 ... Saginaw Valley State announced the resignation of Robert Pratt ... Darryl Jacobs appointed interim coach at Montclair State, succeeding Nick DelTufo, who resigned.

Men's basketball assistants--Kevin Turner named assistant coach at Bridgewater State (Massachusetts). Turner returns to the college where he was an assistant coach from 1991 to 1994, when he turned to high-school coaching ... Rob Furillo, Bill McCall and Joe Scott hired at Rutgers-Newark. Furillo and Scott were assistants at Stevens Tech and McCall returns for a second stint at Rutgers-Newark ... Bob Hanson, assistant coach at Kansas State, resigned to become director of the Wichita (Kansas) Sports Commission.

Women's basketball--Stephen Post appointed head coach at Manhattanville. Post, who is taking his first collegiate head coaching position, has been an assistant men's basketball coach at Manhattan, Iona and Yeshiva ... Stephany Smith named head coach at Middle Tennessee State ... Jennifer Wasson hired at Alabama-Birmingham.

Women's basketball assistants--Tamala Webster hired as an assistant coach at Morgan State. She has been coaching at the high-school level ... John Vigliotti appointed assistant coach at Quinnipiac. Vigliotti was assistant women's basketball coach at Southern Connecticut State from 1985 to 1994 ... Jim Meyer hired as assistant coach at Long Island-Brooklyn. He was an assistant at Gannon last year.

Men's and women's cross country--Andrew Roberts hired as head coach for men's and women's cross country and track and field at Syracuse. Roberts has been interim coach since August and an assistant coach at Syracuse for the past 12 years ... Jonathan Carter hired as head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Long Island-Brooklyn. Carter has been assistant coach.

Men's and women's cross country assistant--Julia Sandlford appointed assistant men's and women's coach at Long Island-Brooklyn, succeeding Jonathan Carter, who became head coach.

Women's gymnastics assistant--Steve Craig named assistant coach at Denver. He was an assistant coach at Pittsburgh for the past two years.

Men's and women's fencing--Stuart Lee hired as head fencing coach at UC San Diego, succeeding cohead coaches Chuck Alexander and Mike Aiau. Alexander and Aiau will remain on the staff as assistant coaches. Lee is a San Diego Division foil and epee champion and Pacific Coast epee champion.

Field hockey--Vickie Sax, head field hockey coach at Mansfield for the past two seasons, named head women's softball coach at Colgate. Sax will join the Colgate staff at the conclusion of the field hockey season at Mansfield. She was a volunteer assistant softball coach at Mansfield last spring.

Women's lacrosse--Eleanor Shriver appointed head coach at Washington (Maryland), where she also will be head women's soccer coach. A 1993 Washington graduate, Shriver was an assistant women's lacrosse coach last season at Loyola (Maryland) ... Joan Milhous hired at Villanova.

Men's and women's rowing assistant--Richard Ruggieri appointed assistant men's and women's crew coach at Drexel. Ruggieri has been coach of the elite women's program at Penn Athletic Club and an assistant crew coach at Virginia.

Men's soccer--Louis Bilowitz, assistant coach at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for the last two seasons, promoted to head coach at the conclusion of the 1997 season. He will succeed Steve Davis, who is retiring after 29 seasons as head coach of the Stags.

Women's soccer--Eleanor Shriver appointed head coach at Washington (Maryland), where she also will be head women's lacrosse coach. A 1993 Washington graduate, Shriver was an assistant women's lacrosse coach last season at Loyola (Maryland).

Women's softball--Vickie Sax named head coach at Colgate. Sax will join the Colgate staff at the conclusion of the field hockey season at Mansfield, where she has been head field hockey coach for two years. She was a volunteer assistant softball coach at Mansfield last spring.

Men's swimming and diving assistant--Toby Holmberg hired as assistant men's swimming coach at Villanova.

Academic counselor--Brian Evans named academic counselor in the Texas Tech athletics department. Evans has been academic coordinator at Montana State for the past two years.

Business manager--Brian Murray hired as associate business manager at Villanova.

Compliance director--Bill Bryant appointed director of compliance at William and Mary. He was assistant athletics director for student affairs at Pittsburgh for the past seven years.

Sports information director--Andy Seeley named sports information director at Northwest Missouri State. Seeley was SID at USA Roller Skating in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Sports information assistants--David Dawson hired as assistant SID at Kennesaw State ... Michael Mandujano appointed assistant SID at Stetson. He was an intern in the Illinois sports information department last year ... Julie Prince, assistant SID and publications coordinator at Marshall since June, named assistant SID at Miami (Ohio). She replaces Courtney Morrison, who became assistant communications director with the Atlantic 10 Conference ... Brian Fremund named assistant SID at New Orleans. Fremund was assistant SID at Jacksonville for the past two years ... Jeff Andriesse appointed assistant SID at Long Island-Brooklyn. He was a public relations intern at the Big East Conference last year.

Athletic trainer--Jayne Kitsos appointed interim head trainer at Long Island-Brooklyn, succeeding Said Hamdan, who became an assistant trainer for the New York Knicks. Kitsos was assistant trainer last year.

Assistant athletic trainer--Stephanie Ritter hired as assistant athletic trainer at Drexel. Ritter was a student athletic trainer at Temple.

CONFERENCES

Jason Horn selected as director of marketing/promotions at Conference USA. Horn joins the conference from Palace Sports & Entertainment/Detroit Pistons in Auburn Hills, Michigan, where he was an account executive for corporate marketing.

Claire Poynter appointed administrative assistant at the Big South Conference. Poynter was a service sales representative at Support Net, Inc.

CORRECTION

The name of Bob Vanatta was spelled incorrectly in the NCAA Record section of the September 22 issue of The NCAA News. Vanatta was promoted to associate athletics director at Florida Atlantic.


Notables

The winners of the AT&T Long Distance Awards for college football games played through the weekend of October 11 are: longest run from scrimmage, (tie) 80 yards, Sirr Parker, Texas A&M vs. Iowa State, and Jerod Douglas, Baylor vs. Nebraska; longest pass play, 93 yards, Billy Dicken to Brian Alford, Purdue vs. Minnesota; longest punt return (minimum two punts), 61.5 yards on two punts, James Garcia, Kansas State vs. Missouri; longest punt return, 85 yards, Craig Yeast, Kentucky vs. South Carolina; longest kickoff return, 94 yards, Leon Weathersby, Bowling Green vs. Western Michigan; and longest field goal, 56 yards, Chris Sailer, UCLA vs. Oregon. AT&T donates $400 each week in each of the six categories to the NCAA Degree-Completion Scholarship Program.


Deaths

J. Melvin Thurston, captain of the Canisius basketball team in the 1940s, died October 8 in Lockport, New York. He was 78. Thurston was a member of the Canisius team from 1941 through 1943, serving as captain for two years. He went on to a brief professional basketball career with the Buffalo Bisons of the National Basketball League.

Ronnell Felton, a member of the Niagara men's basketball team from 1994 to 1996, died in August of leukemia. A memorial mass was held on the campus October 16.
