Beauregard named AD at Western Michigan

Kathy Beauregard, senior associate director of athletics at Western Michigan since 1993, has been promoted to athletics director.

Beauregard takes over for Jim Weaver, who resigned after two years to become AD at Virginia Tech.

Beauregard is the first woman to head intercollegiate athletics at Western Michigan and the third in the Mid-American Conference.

She joined the Western Michigan staff in 1979 as head women's gymnastics coach. During nine seasons, she produced two conference championship teams and twice was selected MAC coach of the year. She was named associate AD in 1988 and senior associate AD in 1993.

Beauregard earned a bachelor's degree at Hope in 1979 and a master's degree at Western Illinois in 1981. She is a member of the executive committee of the National Association of Athletic Compliance Coordinators and chair of the MAC marketing committee. She also serves on the MAC gender-equity committee.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Herman Collier Jr., president emeritus at Moravian, named interim president at Lees-McRae, succeeding Dwaine Greene, associate professor of religion and former Lees-McRae provost, who has been serving as acting president since June.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Jim Weaver, athletics director at Western Michigan for the past two years, hired at Virginia Tech. Weaver, who also has served as AD at UNLV, replaces Sharon McCloskey, who has served as interim AD at Virginia Tech since June ... Thomas Brennan appointed athletics director at La Salle. Brennan has been AD at San Jose State for seven years ... John Johnson named AD at Weber State, succeeding Gordon Belnap, who will retire effective October 31. Johnson will assume his new duties November 1 ... Bowdoin announced that athletics director Sidney Watson will retire June 30, 1998.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Barbara Walker named assistant athletics director for compliance services at Texas. She was senior associate AD at Oregon and has chaired the Pacific-10 Conference compliance committee ... Renee Wiebe appointed assistant AD for marketing and promotions at San Diego. She was marketing and promotions director at Northern Iowa from 1993 to 1995.

COACHES

Baseball--Larry Conti named head coach at La Salle.

Baseball assistant--Tommy Dunbar named assistant coach at South Carolina-Aiken. Dunbar was a professional baseball player and coach for 16 years before joining the South Carolina-Aiken staff as second assistant coach last year.

Men's basketball--Tim Harrison hired as head coach at Colorado School of Mines. Harrison, who was head coach for the Holbaek Basketball Klub in Holbaek, Denmark, is on his second tour of duty with the Orediggers, having served as an assistant coach in 1992-93 ... Don Newman appointed interim head coach at Arizona State, succeeding Bill Frieder, who resigned. Newman was hired in May to help Frieder recruit players for Arizona State. He was head coach at Cal State Sacramento for five years ... John Dwindell selected as head coach at Concordia (New York).

Men's basketball assistants--Bob Walsh hired as restricted-earnings coach at San Diego. He was an administrative assistant for men's basketball at Iona the past two years ... Drew Kelly named assistant coach at Haverford. He was team manager for the Villanova men's basketball team the past four seasons ... Vince Taylor selected as assistant coach at Pittsburgh. Taylor spent the past 13 seasons playing professional basketball in Europe ... Kevin Kudla named assistant men's and women's basketball coach at Clarkson.

Women's basketball--DePaul head coach Doug Bruno signed a four-year contract extension. Bruno will be entering his 12th season on the Blue Demon bench this year and is the most victorious coach in DePaul women's basketball history with 203 wins ... Richard Kelly hired as head coach at Emerson-Massachusetts College of Art. Kelly served as head women's basketball coach at Curry from 1983 to 1994.

Women's basketball assistants--Dave Wilcoxen named assistant coach at Marietta, where he played basketball and baseball before graduating in 1966. Wilcoxen coached at the high-school level before retiring after the 1996-97 season ... Bob Witt hired at Franklin Pierce ... Amy Saneholtz hired at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo ... Kevin Kudla named assistant men's and women's basketball coach at Clarkson ... Barbara Smith hired at North Carolina Central.

Men's and women's cross country--Reuben Njau named head coach at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis, succeeding Larbi Oukata, who resigned to concentrate on his duties within the department of foreign languages and cultures. Njau was a member of the Northeast Louisiana track team before graduating in 1995 ... Errol Anderson appointed head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at St. Francis (New York). Anderson has been head track and cross country coach at CCNY for the past 16 years.

Women's gymnastics--Kurt Turner hired at Radford.

Men's ice hockey assistants--Todd Flynn selected as assistant coach at Wentworth Institute, succeeding Peter Oshana, who resigned ... Eric Means hired as full-time assistant coach at Mankato State and John Sertich named volunteer assistant. Means has been graduate assistant coach for the past two years. Sertich was a four-year letterwinner in hockey at Bemidji State.

Men's lacrosse--John Barry hired as head coach at Franklin Pierce.

Men's and women's rowing--Franklin Pierce appointed Catherine Shonk as head men's and women's crew coach.

Women's soccer--Sal Renzo named head coach at Concordia (New York).

Women's soccer assistant--Laura Roth selected as graduate assistant coach at South Carolina-Aiken. Roth played four years of varsity soccer at MacMurray before graduating in May.

Women's softball--Temple selected Rocci Pignoli as head coach.

Women's softball assistants--Jeanne Ferrier appointed assistant coach at Florida International. Ferrier was a four-year member of the softball team at Rhode Island before graduating in 1996 ... San Diego State hired Deb Hartwig and Karen Honey as assistant coaches. Hartwig has been a part-time assistant for the Aztecs the past three years and will be hitting and catching coach. Honey, who last coached at LA Valley College, will coach outfielders.

Men's and women's tennis--Jenny Hilt promoted to head women's coach at Long Beach State, succeeding Jami Jones, who resigned after four years. Hilt was an assistant coach at Long Beach State for the past two years ... Chet Porowski named head women's coach at Franklin Pierce ... David Nass appointed men's and women's tennis coach at North Carolina Central ... Tomsilav Poljak appointed women's coach at Louisiana Tech.

Men's and women's track and field--Matt Pantusa appointed head track and field coach at Nicholls State. Pantusa was an assistant coach at Davidson ... Errol Anderson named head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach at St. Francis (New York). Anderson has been head track and cross country coach at CCNY for the past 16 years ... Neil Davis hired as men's track and field coach at Cornell College ... Ralph Spry named track and field coach at Auburn.

Women's volleyball assistant--Everett Hutto hired as assistant women's volleyball coach at Winthrop. As an undergraduate at Winthrop, Hutto served as manager and student assistant with the volleyball squad. He also will serve as assistant sports information director.

STAFF

Media relations assistant--Todd Trulli hired as assistant director of media relations/women's athletics at Texas, succeeding Joe Chemycz, who resigned. Trulli was media relations assistant at Massachusetts last year.

Sports information assistant--Everett Hutto named assistant sports information director at Winthrop, succeeding David Lang, who became assistant SID at Maine. Hutto, who graduated in May from Winthrop, also will be assistant women's volleyball coach. He was a student SID as an undergraduate ... John Butman named assistant SID at Holy Cross. Butman spent the past two years as assistant SID at Maine after serving as a sports information intern at Holy Cross in 1994-95.

Strength and conditioning coach--Lou DeNeen hired as the first full-time strength and conditioning coach at Florida International. He has been assistant strength and conditioning coach at California for the past three years.

Ticket manager--Jose Vega named ticket manager at DePaul. He has been ticket office supervisor for the Chicago White Sox since 1990.

Athletic trainer--Frank Neu appointed head trainer at Lycoming after serving as a volunteer trainer at the college during 1996-97 ... Concordia (New York) named Roy Edward Kievit as athletic trainer.

Assistant athletic trainer--Nicolette Thol named assistant trainer at Lycoming. Thol has been a graduate assistant trainer and student trainer at Kutztown.

CONFERENCES

Mike Marcil appointed commissioner of the North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, succeeding Noel Olson, who is retiring after 13 years as commissioner. Marcil, a compliance representative at the NCAA national office for the past six years, previously was associate commissioner of the Northeast Conference.

Joyce Howse hired as director of compliance for the Big South Conference. Howse has been assistant athletics director for compliance at Marshall.

ASSOCIATIONS

USA Baseball announced it will relocate its national headquarters from Trenton, New Jersey, to Tucson, Arizona. The organization expects to complete the move in mid-November.

NCAA NATIONAL OFFICE

Jill Sutton hired as assistant director of broadcast services in the NCAA public affairs group. Sutton most recently worked with Fox Sports as a production associate and broadcast coordinator. She also has freelanced for NBC Sports, ABC Sports and CBS Sports. Sutton succeeds Gina McNeal, who was named interim director of broadcast services.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS

Humboldt State announced it will join the Pacific West Conference beginning with the 1998-99 academic year. The school's current affiliation with the Northern California Athletic Conference will end after the 1997-98 academic year, when the league officially will disband.

Villa Julie has been admitted to the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

AGREEMENTS

The Arizona Sports Foundation, parent organization of the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Arizona, signed a letter of intent to acquire the Copper Bowl in Tucson. The move comes after title sponsor Weiser Lock withdrew its support of the game. This year's Copper Bowl, which was established in 1989, is scheduled for December 27 and the Fiesta Bowl will be played December 31. Officials said two games under one banner should mean greater appeal to advertisers and teams.

The Equitable Life Assurance Society and its parent, AXA of France, agreed to a three-year sponsorship deal with the Liberty Bowl. The deal provides that the 39-year-old game will be renamed the AXA/Equitable Liberty Bowl. It is scheduled for December 31 in Memphis.

Winners of the AT&T Long Distance Awards for college football games played through the weekend of September 20 are: longest run from scrimmage, 91 yards, Astron Whatley, Kent vs. Eastern Michigan; longest pass play, 84 yards, Chad Pennington to Llow Turner, Marshall vs. Western Illinois; longest punt average (minimum two punts) (tie), 50 yards on eight punts, Chad Kessler, LSU vs. Auburn, and 50 yards on seven punts, Jaret Holmes, Auburn vs. LSU; longest punt return, 90 yards, Peter Warrick, Florida State vs. Clemson; longest kickoff return, 96 yards, DeShawn Williams, Oregon State vs. Stanford; and longest field goal, 51 yards, Jay Feely, Michigan vs. Baylor. AT&T donates $400 weekly in each of the six categories to the NCAA Degree-Completion Scholarship Program.

Eve Atkinson, director of athletics at Lafayette, named recipient of the Katherine Ley Award by the Eastern College Athletic Conference. The award is presented annually to honor someone of demonstrated leadership ability, a strong proponent of women's issues and a role model for women coaches and administrators.


Deaths

Eddie Powell, a Southeastern Oklahoma basketball player, died September 19 near Paris, Texas, in an automobile accident. He was 23. The car Powell was riding in was struck by a cow that had been hit by another vehicle. Powell was a senior point guard from Oakland, California, averaging 13.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 137 assists.

Abe Gibron, a football guard at Purdue in the 1940s, died September 23 at his home in Belle Air, Florida. He was 72. Gibron entered professional football in 1949, joining Buffalo, followed by a seven-year stint with the Cleveland Browns. He joined the Chicago Bears in 1958 before retiring as a player. He was an assistant coach with the Washington Redskins for four years before joining the Bears' coaching staff in 1965. He became head coach in Chicago in 1972, leading the Bears for three seasons.

Bob Frailey, former athletics director and coach at American, died September 24 in Washington, D.C. He was 72. Frailey was associated with the university as a coach and administrator for 38 years. He coached swimming and diving for 16 years and served as tennis coach for a time. He became AD in 1964.

Michael Charles, a standout basketball player at Alabama-Birmingham in the mid-1980s, was shot to death September 26 in Birmingham. He was 31. Police said Charles was shot while knocking on the door of a house. He played for the university from 1984 through 1988 and then played professionally overseas.
