Boston College selects DeFilippo as AD

Gene DeFilippo, athletics director at Villanova since 1993, has been appointed athletics director at Boston College. He will assume his new position in early October.

Sanford will direct the team as it becomes the 23rd varsity sport at Connecticut during the 1997-98 academic year.

DeFilippo is a member of the NCAA Division I Management Council.

A 1973 graduate of Springfield, DeFilippo earned three varsity letters in football during his undergraduate career. He earned a master's degree in educational administration at Tennessee, where he also was a graduate assistant football coach.

He went on to work as offensive coordinator at Youngstown State and offensive backfield coach at Vanderbilt. DeFilippo joined the athletics administration ranks as director of athletics administrative services at Vanderbilt in 1983. He later was named athletics director at South Carolina-Spartanburg and then associate AD for external affairs at Kentucky.

At Boston College, DeFilippo will oversee the operation of an athletics department with 800 student-athletes in 33 varsity sports.

John Borek appointed president at Liberty. He has been a professor of business at Georgia State ... David Gilbert, president of Eastern Oregon, will retire in June 1998 ... Joseph Hagan, president at Assumption, announced his retirement effective July 31, 1998 ... Herman James, president at Rowan, resigned effective June 30, 1998 ... Laurel Wilkening has resigned as chancellor at UC Irvine effective June 30, 1998.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

John Araouzos and Gary Smith have been named interim athletics directors at CCNY, succeeding Richard Zerneck, who became AD and chair of physical education at Yeshiva. Araouzos previously served as interim AD from 1995 to 1996. Smith has been men's basketball coach since 1988 and special assistant for athletics since 1995 ... Thomas Brennan, AD at San Jose State, hired as AD at La Salle, effective in November. Brennan has been athletics director at San Jose State since October 1990 ... G. Jean Cerra named associate vice-president for academic services at Barry. Cerra, a member of the Division II Management Council, has been dean of the school of human performance and leisure science at Barry ... Daniel Audette appointed director of men's athletics at Millersville, succeeding Gene Carpenter, who resigned to concentrate on his duties as head football coach and professor of health and physical education. Audette was director of athletics and recreational sports at Pittsburgh-Bradford.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Janelle Martin promoted to associate athletics director at Kansas. Martin, in her eighth year on the Kansas staff, served as assistant AD for compliance during the past year.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Chris Burkhalter and Cathy Grothe promoted to assistant athletics director at Indiana State. Burkhalter has been director of athletics media relations for the past year and Grothe has been director of athletics marketing since July 1996 ... Pat Warren promoted to assistant AD at Kansas, where he has been assistant to the athletics director for the past year ... David Williford, co-interim sports information director at Oregon for the past 14 months, named assistant AD for media services at the school. Williford joined the Oregon sports information staff as assistant director in 1985.

COACHES

Baseball assistants--Greg Frady promoted to associate head coach at Central Florida and Craig Cozart hired as assistant coach ... Micah Nori named assistant coach at Miami (Ohio), succeeding Greg McVey, who became an assistant coach at Furman. Nori was a four-year starter for the Indiana baseball team from 1994 to 1997.

Men's basketball assistants--Michael McClain, all-America point guard at Missouri-Rolla during the 1995-96 season, named assistant coach at his alma mater. He succeeds Todd Franklin, who became head coach at Southeastern Illinois Community College ... James Whilhelmi appointed assistant coach at Northeastern Illinois. He was an assistant coach for the football and men's basketball teams at Wisconsin-Stevens Point the past two years ... Ray Ortiz, Richard Lee and Charles Fox hired at Stevens Tech ... Michael Vandegarde named assistant coach at Southwest Texas State. He was an assistant coach at Southeastern (Iowa) Community College last season ... Jeff Cobb promoted to associate head coach at St. Leo. Cobb is in his fifth year as an assistant with the Monarch coaching staff.

Women's basketball--Tammy Metcalf-Filzen given additional duties as interim head basketball coach at Carleton. She has been head women's soccer coach since 1994 and was an assistant basketball coach at Carleton from 1992 to 1995 ... Amy Taylor, the only 1,000-point scorer in Haverford women's basketball history, returned to the college as interim head coach. She previously assisted with the basketball and women's volleyball teams for four years after her graduation in 1992 ... Steve Small, an integral part of the women's basketball staff at Western Kentucky for the past 13 seasons, named head coach of the Lady Topper program. Small spent the last five years as associate head coach ... Carla Debro, head coach at Savannah State for two years, resigned to become an assistant coach at Northeastern Illinois. Debro also was head women's volleyball coach.

Women's basketball assistants--Mary Taylor Cowles named associate head coach at Western Kentucky. Cowles has been an assistant coach for the past three years ... Sandra Marbut hired as assistant coach at Western Illinois. Marbut previously was head coach at Colorado-Colorado Springs ... Ray Simmons and Laurent Crawford hired as assistant coaches at Northeastern Illinois. Crawford played professionally in Australia for three years.

Men's golf assistant--David Giacondino hired as assistant coach at Quinnipiac. Giacondino is entering his seventh year as head golf professional at Wallingford Country Club, which has become the home course of the men's golf team.

Women's golf--Mike Morrow, head golf pro/manager of the Kent golf course since January 1990, appointed head coach for the university's newly formed women's golf program, which will start competition in fall 1998.

Women's gymnastics--Leslie Bloedel named head coach at Cortland State. Bloedel has served for the past two years as an assistant coach at Gustavus Adolphus, where she competed on four consecutive NCGA national-championship teams.

Men's ice hockey--Tim Vanini hired as head coach at Cortland State after serving as an assistant coach at Hamilton last season. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Cornell men's ice hockey team.

Women's ice hockey--Todd Carroll selected as Mankato State's first women's ice hockey coach. Carroll, who has served as an assistant with the men's ice hockey team for seven seasons, will lead the Mavericks into their first year of varsity competition in 1998-99.

Women's ice hockey assistant--Susan Mussey hired as associate head coach at Providence, where she had a standout playing career as a member of the hockey and softball teams. She spent the past five years as a competition services coordinator for the Badger State Games.

Men's lacrosse--John Hayden selected as head coach at St. Michael's. Hayden was head coach at Johnson State for the past four years.

Women's lacrosse--Cynthia Wetmore appointed head women's lacrosse coach at Cortland State. Wetmore has been coaching at the high-school level.

Women's softball--Dana Fulmer named head softball coach at Providence. Fulmer was an assistant coach for two seasons at Georgia Southern ... Lynn Hier hired as head coach at St. Michael's. She has been coaching at the high-school level ... Gina Battista appointed head coach at Staten Island, succeeding Sonny Grasso, who retired.

Women's softball assistants--Paul Rizzo hired as assistant coach at Bryant ... Jen Dahl named assistant coach at La Salle. She was a standout pitcher for Rider, leading the team into the 1997 postseason competition ... Brandi Macias appointed assistant coach at Purdue. Macias, who graduated in May from Iowa, led the Hawkeye softball team to three consecutive College World Series appearances ... Beth Collett selected as assistant coach at Texas Tech. A 1997 graduate, Collett worked as a student coach at South Carolina last season ... Tracie Triplett hired at Georgia Southern, succeeding Dana Fulmer, who became head coach at Providence. Triplett most recently served as an assistant coach at Mesa (Arizona) Community College ... Keri O'Brien named assistant coach at St. Leo. O'Brien was a four-year letterwinner in both softball and basketball at Staten Island.

Men's and women's swimming and diving--Jennifer Fenton hired as head men's and women's swimming coach at King's (Pennsylvania). She is a fitness/rehabilitation specialist at East Coast Rehabilitation of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania ... Jim Mountjoy named men's and women's diving coach at Purdue. He served as Purdue's diving coach for the past three seasons but left for a brief period this summer to focus on academic pursuits.

Men's and women's track and field--Que McMaster named head men's and women's track and field coach at Texas-San Antonio. He previously coached at Baylor and Odessa College.

Men's and women's track and field assistants--Trece Hayslett appointed assistant coach at Texas Tech, working with hurdlers and jumpers. She also is an assistant cross country coach. Hayslett was an assistant men's and women's track coach at Tulane last year ... Scott Frye named throwing coach at Missouri-Kansas City, succeeding Will Wabaunsee, who resigned to accept a similar position at Michigan State. Frye earned all-conference honors in the Missouri Valley Conference while competing for the Wichita State track team.

Women's volleyball--Ken Nichols named interim head coach at Providence, succeeding Karen Mendes, who resigned to take a high-school coaching position. Nichols was Mendes' assistant coach last season ... Carla Debro, head coach at Savannah State for two years, resigned to become an assistant women's basketball coach at Northeastern Illinois. Debro also was head women's basketball coach at Savannah State.

Women's volleyball assistants--Miriam Metzcus hired as assistant coach at Central Florida. She was interim assistant coach last season ... Maryanne Casey and Krista Wallach hired at Stevens Tech.

STAFF

Health and fitness coordinator--Heather Chandor hired as health and fitness coordinator at Manhattanville. Chandor is a certified personal trainer and fitness instructor.

Sports information directors--
J. D. Barlow appointed sports information director at Clayton State. He was an assistant in the athletics media relations office at Georgia Southern ... Thomas Michael Hanrahan named SID at Lebanon Valley. Hanrahan was director of public and media relations for the Harrisburg Heat professional soccer club ... Cris Belvin promoted to SID at Stetson, succeeding Jerry Rashid, who resigned. Belvin was hired as assistant SID in August.

Athletic training assistants--Anthony Sutton, Bill Cowgill, Cheryl Thompson and David Key hired as assistant athletic trainers at Notre Dame.

CONFERENCES

Eric Capper hired as assistant commissioner for media relations and championships at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Capper was assistant sports information director and graduate assistant at Iowa for the past three years.

Bill Mottola elected commissioner of the New England Football Conference. Mottola has been athletics director at Maine Maritime since 1978.

The Big East Conference appointed Roger Taylor as men's and women's soccer assigner.

Bo Ruggiero, former athletics director at Bridgewater State (Massachusetts), named director of marketing and promotions for the Eastern Football Conference.

ASSOCIATIONS

Ed Saunders appointed director of media relations at the Hockey East Association, succeeding Ed McLaughlin, who became assistant athletics director at Merrimack.

USA Baseball selected Jeff Odenwald as director of marketing and business affairs. Odenwald has more than 20 years' experience as a professional baseball administrator.

TELEVISION

The 1997 John R. Wooden Classic will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net December 6. The 1997 Wooden Classic will feature Georgia vs. Stanford and UCLA vs. New Mexico. For the past three years, the classic has been televised by NBC.

Winners of the AT&T Long Distance Awards for college football games played through the weekend of September 13 are: longest run from scrimmage, 80 yards, Ron Dayne, Wisconsin vs. San Jose State; longest pass play, 92 yards, Chad Pennington to LaVorn Colclough, Marshall vs. Kent; longest punt average (minimum two punts), 53.2 on five punts, Chad Kessler, LSU vs. Mississippi State; longest punt return, 94 yards, Lamar Chapman, Kansas State vs. Ohio; longest kickoff return, 100 yards, Michael Wiley, Ohio State vs. Bowling Green; and longest field goal, 55 yards, Martin Gramatica, Kansas State vs. Ohio. AT&T contributes $400 each week in each of the six categories to the NCAA Degree-Completion Scholarship Program.


Deaths

Paul Brechler, the first commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference, died September 13 at his home in Denver. He was 86. Before his appointment as WAC commissioner, Brechler presided over the Mountain States Athletic Conference from 1960 to 1962. He served the WAC from 1962 through 1969 and then was commissioner of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference from 1976 through 1990. Before joining the conference ranks, Brechler was athletics director at Iowa from 1947 to 1960 and AD at California from 1968 to 1972.
