Cornell moves Moran to development

Richie Moran, men's lacrosse coach at Cornell the past 29 years and a member of the national Lacrosse Hall of Fame, has resigned as head coach to lead a new lacrosse fund-raising initiative at the university.

Moran now takes on the duties of associate director of athletics alumni affairs and development, including immediately embarking on a fund-raising effort for Cornell lacrosse.

Moran, who has an overall record of 257-121, led Cornell to national championships in 1971, 1976 and 1977 and runner-up finishes in 1978, 1987 and 1988. His teams competed in the NCAA tournament 14 times, most recently in 1995. Under Moran, Cornell won 15 Ivy League championships.

A graduate of Maryland, Moran was a midfielder on the 1959 Terrapin national-championship lacrosse team and was inducted into the school's hall of fame in December 1991.

After coaching at the high-school level, Moran became head coach at Cornell in 1969.

He also will serve as executive director of the Green Wave Club, the athletics department's fund-raising arm. Gardiner was AD at Bellarmine the past three years ... Lorek, who also will be head track coach, was an assistant last season at Butler and head women's cross country and track coach at Idaho from 1985 to 1996 ... Sten Fjeldheim returned to Northern Michigan as men's and women's cross country coach and nordic skiing coach. Fjeldheim, who previously was nordic and cross country coach at Northern Michigan from 1986 to 1994, replaces Al Serrano as cross country coach ... Christopher Schumacher hired as head men's and women's track coach and cross country coach at Illinois Wesleyan. FIELD HOCKEY--Tara Boyer Seymour hired as head coach at Eastern ... Michelle White promoted to head coach at Simmons after spending last season as assistant coach ... Katrina King named head coach at Millersville, where she starred on the field hockey team. For the past two seasons, King has been head coach at Massachusetts-Lowell ... FIELD HOCKEY ASSISTANT--Mary Casabian named assistant coach at Harvard. Casabian joins the Harvard staff after an impressive playing career at Iowa. She graduated in May.

WOMEN'S GOLF--Sarah Hindi, head coach at New Mexico the past seven years, resigned to pursue business interests. Hindi led New Mexico to four straight Western Athletic Conference championships ... Marge Howard hired to head the new women's golf team at Illinois College. Howard retired in June after a 37-year career as a high-school coach ... Cathy Stevens, head coach at Wichita State the past four years, resigned to continue her education ... Olivet graduate Steve Hettinga returns to the head coaching position at his alma mater. He had a brief stint coaching the Lady Comets in 1994. Hettinga also serves as head men's basketball coach.

WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY--Kay Cowperthwait named interim coach for the 1997-98 season at Amherst. Cowperthwait joins Amherst after establishing the varsity women's lacrosse program at Stanford.

WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY ASSISTANTS--Elizabeth "Libby" Witchger and David Horn hired as assistant coaches at Minnesota. Witchger joins Minnesota after a standout career as a goalkeeper at Brown. Horn was an assistant at Colby the past year.

MEN'S LACROSSE--John Stapleford named head coach at Eastern. He has coached at the high-school level ... Randy Mearns appointed head coach at Canisius, replacing Jon Lantzy, who became head coach at St. Andrews. Mearns has played with the Major Indoor Lacrosse League.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE--Carolyn Urban hired as head coach at Eastern, where she was most valuable player on the lacrosse team in 1991 and 1993. She has been a high-school coach ... Colleen Bruley selected for the newly created full-time women's lacrosse/women's soccer coach at New Paltz State. She will organize the newly added women's lacrosse team that will begin play next spring ... Sarah Bennett named head coach at Wooster, succeeding Tamra Barnes, who posted a record of 15-15 during the past two years. Bennett was the assistant women's lacrosse and field hockey coach at Skidmore the past two years.

WOMEN'S ROWING--Elena Bratichko appointed head women's crew coach at George Mason. Bratichko was a member of the Soviet National Rowing Team from 1979 to 1985 ... Barb Kirch selected as head coach at Pennsylvania after serving as head coach at Dartmouth the past nine years.

WOMEN'S ROWING ASSISTANT--Ben Foster named assistant crew coach at Mercyhurst, succeeding Sandie Mintz, who left the college to pursue other interests.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SKIING--Sten Fjeldheim returned to Northern Michigan as men's and women's nordic skiing coach and women's alpine skiing coach. Fjeldheim, who previously was nordic and cross country coach at Northern Michigan from 1986 to 1994, replaces John Peppler as alpine coach and Al Serrano as nordic coach.

MEN'S SOCCER--Don Decowski appointed head coach at New England College ... Dave Chesler hired as head men's soccer coach at Fresno State, succeeding John Bluem, who became head coach at Ohio State. Chesler has been a full-time assistant at Washington the past five seasons ... Ray Smith named head coach at Wisconsin-Platteville, succeeding longtime head coach Fred Eberlein, who will retire at the end of the 1997 season. Smith was head coach at Elmhurst the past two seasons.

WOMEN'S SOCCER--Sue Viscomi, head coach at Oswego State the past seven years, resigned to become head coach and associate AD at Hamilton. Head men's soccer coach Ken Peterson will assume head coaching duties for both programs at Oswego State ... WOMEN'S SOFTBALL--Jennifer Ruff hired to coordinate the development of Centre's new women's softball program, which will become a varsity sport in 1998-99. Ruff also will be head women's basketball coach ... George Mason selected Elizabeth Fulcher as head softball coach. Fulcher was head coach at Massachusetts Maritime last season ... Kathy Riley appointed head coach at Longwood. Riley has coached at Mount Olive since 1993 ... Cindy Jacobelli named head women's softball and volleyball coach at Penn State-Behrend. Jacobelli was head volleyball and assistant softball coach at Notre Dame College ... Florida International hired Kim Gwydir as the school's first head women's softball coach. The university will field women's fastpitch softball as an intercollegiate sport next spring. Gwydir was head coach at Long Island-C. W. Post the past four seasons ... Pattie Holthaus named head coach at Nicholls State. Holthaus joins Nicholls State after a five-year stint at Tulsa, where she started the school's softball program ... MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TENNIS--Lisa Komara named head women's tennis coach at Wooster. She coached tennis, women's basketball and volleyball at Bethany (West Virginia) the past 12 years ... Sean Sloane, head men's tennis coach and men's squash coach at Williams for 16 years, hired as head coach of men's tennis and men's and women's squash at Haverford ... AGREEMENTS

Outback Bowl officials have reached agreements that will extend the annual match-up of Big Ten and Southeastern Conference teams through the January 1, 2002, game. New contracts with TV partner ESPN and title sponsor Outback Steakhouse also were announced.

The Music City Bowl, debuting in December 1998, signed a four-year deal with ESPN. The bowl is scheduled for December 29, 1998, at Vanderbilt Stadium, pitting the Southeastern Conference against an at-large team.

CORRECTIONS

The type of surface in the football stadium at Northwestern was listed incorrectly in the August 4 issue of The NCAA News. As part of a renovation at Ryan Field, a grass field has been installed for the 1997 football season.

The August 4 edition of the Record listed the incorrect alma mater for Brett Simpson, the new men's and women's tennis coach at Anderson (South Carolina). He was an All-American at Lander.
