Cornell moves Moran to developmentRichie Moran, men's lacrosse coach at Cornell the past 29 years and a member of the national Lacrosse Hall of Fame, has resigned as head coach to lead a new lacrosse fund-raising initiative at the university. Moran now takes on the duties of associate director of athletics alumni affairs and development, including immediately embarking on a fund-raising effort for Cornell lacrosse. Moran, who has an overall record of 257-121, led Cornell to national championships in 1971, 1976 and 1977 and runner-up finishes in 1978, 1987 and 1988. His teams competed in the NCAA tournament 14 times, most recently in 1995. Under Moran, Cornell won 15 Ivy League championships. A graduate of Maryland, Moran was a midfielder on the 1959 Terrapin national-championship lacrosse team and was inducted into the school's hall of fame in December 1991.
After coaching at the high-school level, Moran became head coach at Cornell in 1969.

AGREEMENTS Outback Bowl officials have reached agreements that will extend the annual match-up of Big Ten and Southeastern Conference teams through the January 1, 2002, game. New contracts with TV partner ESPN and title sponsor Outback Steakhouse also were announced. The Music City Bowl, debuting in December 1998, signed a four-year deal with ESPN. The bowl is scheduled for December 29, 1998, at Vanderbilt Stadium, pitting the Southeastern Conference against an at-large team. CORRECTIONS The type of surface in the football stadium at Northwestern was listed incorrectly in the August 4 issue of The NCAA News. As part of a renovation at Ryan Field, a grass field has been installed for the 1997 football season. The August 4 edition of the Record listed the incorrect alma mater for Brett Simpson, the new men's and women's tennis coach at Anderson (South Carolina). He was an All-American at Lander.
Northeast-10 Conference commissioner F. Paul Bogan died of a heart attack July 29
in Westfield, Massachusetts. He was 62. Bogan, the first full-time commissioner of the
conference, had headed the conference since July 1995. Before his appointment as
commissioner, he was athletics director at Westfield State from 1963 to 1995.
Tatum Gressette, former head football coach at Citadel, died July 19 in Columbia,
South Carolina. He was 97.
Rafael Jordan, a junior tennis standout at Georgia, died August 6 in an automobile
accident in his native Puerto Rico. He was 20. In the last year, Jordan earned All-America
honors in doubles with Steve Baldas. Jordan and Baldas were Southeastern Conference
champions.
Keffer McGee, predicted to be a top running back at Mississippi State this season,
died August 5 in Starkville, Mississippi, an apparent drowning victim in a swimming pool.
McGee was 22. He was a fifth-year senior at Mississippi State.
Bob Cope, defensive coordinator at Kansas State, died August 3 in Manhattan,
Kansas. He was 58. Cope was diagnosed with cancer last September. He was in his second
stint with the Wildcats, also serving as defensive coordinator and associate head coach in
1989 and 1990.
John Forney, a fixture in the broadcast booth at Alabama football games for more
than a quarter century, died July 31 in Birmingham, Alabama. He was 70. Forney began his
radio career in 1943 as a high-school senior. Within five years he was announcing
basketball games for Alabama and Auburn.
Ja'Mine Rozzell, considered New Mexico's fullback of the future, drowned August 4
in the Jemez River in Jemez Springs, New Mexico. He was 18. Rozzell played in five games
as a freshman last season.
Dave Peterson, former United States Olympic ice hockey coach, died July 17 after
heart bypass surgery in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was 66. Peterson was head coach of
two U.S. Olympic hockey teams -- 1988 and 1992. He retired last year from USA Hockey's
national staff after serving as director of coaching and player development and technical
director.
Robbie Smith, former LSU pitcher, was killed July 26 in Miami while working as a
Florida Highway Patrol trooper. He was 34. Smith was parked in the emergency lane filling
out paperwork for a traffic stop when his car was struck by another car. Smith, a
four-year veteran of the Florida Highway Patrol, had served with the Tri-County DUI Task
Force the past 18 months. He was captain of the LSU baseball team in 1985 and went on to
pitch in the Minnesota Twins organization from 1985 to 1989.
