Wrestling officiating clinics to use satellite transmissions
The format of the NCAA Wrestling Officiating Improvement Clinics format will change this fall from a series of live presentations to that of a simultaneous satellite telecast.
The simulcast, which will be interactive via telephone, will air from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Central time) Sunday, September 21, from Kansas City, Missouri.
The move from the traditional series of live clinics to a simulcast copies an approach that has been successful in other sports, including baseball, basketball and lacrosse. The advantages vs. a series of live clinics are that coaches and referees throughout the country hear the same answers to commonly asked questions at the same time; people who otherwise might not be able attend a clinic will be able to tune in from any satellite dish (though not interact), using the satellite coordinates; and the NCAA will save money by not having to pay for the clinicians' travel expenses over many weeks.
Two additional in-person clinics will be held: the traditional program on August 17 at the National Wrestling Coaches Association Convention in Orlando and another November 2 in Chicago. Featured speakers at all clinics will be secretary-rules editor Robert G. Bubb and national officiating coordinator Pat McCormick.
A full-time coach (head or assistant) from each Division I school that sponsors wrestling must attend at least one of the clinics. The NCAA Wrestling Committee has the authority to levy a financial penalty for failure to comply. The Wrestling Committee highly recommends that coaches of Division II and III teams also attend.
Officials who wish to be considered to work at a championship tournament or qualifier in any division also must attend a clinic.
Persons who are not required to attend but who are interested in viewing the clinic can receive the satellite telecast by using coordinates Galaxy 9, Transponder 2, Horizontal Down Frequency 3740.
To be credited with attendance, wrestling coaches and officials must be present at one of the live clinics or one of the simulcasts in the accompanying list. For local directions, attendees should call the contact listed at each site. There is no charge for attending the clinics.
