NYSP committee works on planning
Development of a strategic plan stating the NCAA National Youth Sports Program Committee's goals and objectives topped the agenda during the committee's July 16-18 meeting in New York City.
Within the newly restructured NCAA, all Association-wide committees have been charged with developing mission and vision statements.
Because NYSP originally was founded to allow lower-income youths to be exposed to higher goals encompassing higher education, life skills and job responsibilities, the committee developed the following mission statement:
"The NYSP, in partnership with higher education and government, is committed to utilizing interactive sports and educational activities to enable participants to enhance the quality of their lives."
The committee also adopted a vision statement:
"The NYSP nurtures the dreams and aspirations of youth."
In developing a strategic plan to work within those statements, the committee created five specific goals for the upcoming year: (1) Improve the effectiveness of program staff; (2) develop a fiscal plan; (3) develop a public-awareness plan; (4) align the policies and procedures to ensure consistency with the NYSP mission; and (5) continue to improve quality programming.
In order for the committee to meet its newly established goals, the committee restructured itself into the
following subcommittees: strategic planning/budgeting, external relationships, staffing development and strengthening programs.
The committee will meet again in October to allow the newly formed subcommittees to establish objectives that will help them achieve their goals for the 1997-98 year.
In other actions, committee members visited current NYSP programs in New York City, including programs at Lehman College, City College of New York, Medgar Evers College and Hunter College.
