Annual NAADD workshop offers variety of information
The fourth annual National Association of Athletic Development Directors Workshop continued its trend of providing varied information for those attending.
NCAA Executive Director Cedric W. Dempsey provided opening remarks to the June 19-20 event.
Among the highlights of the workshop was a presentation by Steve Chandler of TimeMax. Author of the book "100 Ways to Motivate Yourself" and a highly sought-after motivational speaker, Chandler offered his observations about human beings as "owners" and "victims."
Other presentations focused on the feasibility study as "the ultimate tool," planned giving, and building endowments to achieve security.
During the first day's luncheon, held in conjunction with the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators, guest speaker Jim Host, chief executive officer of Host Communications, Inc., addressed the economic survival of college athletics.
Host said that development directors' competition for funding comes not from other universities and colleges, but from professional sports and the huge amounts of money they command. "The survival of college athletics, therefore, depends to a large extent upon our ability to work together for the common good," he said.
Other presenters included Suzanne Lawder, only the second female president of Goodwill Industries International in 95 years, who spoke about the advantages that female fund raisers bring to organizations. Pat Battle and Scott Ford of the Collegiate Licensing Company addressed the special fund-raising opportunities that special celebrations bring, and Jeff Nordensson and Steve Lynn of Nordensson Lynn & Associates delivered a "cross-over" presentation dealing with the use of professional firms to sell tickets and create prospects.
Finally, three university presidents -- David L. Jorns of Eastern Illinois University, Ralph Wagoner of Augustana College (Illinois) and Gregory Campbell of Carthage College -- offered their views of what college presidents at levels other that Division I-A look for in athletics directors and development officers.
A new slate of NAADD officers and executive committee members was installed for 1997-98.
The officers are Tom Sanders, University of Arizona, president; Carol Oakland, Augustana College (South Dakota), first vice-president; Brian Crockett, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, second vice-president; and Terry Fossum, Michigan State University, third vice-president/secretary.
New Executive Committee members are Lu Merritt of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and Bobby Purcell of North Carolina State University.
