Ferreira named volleyball coach at Idaho

Carl Ferreira, head women's volleyball coach at Cal State Bakersfield for the past three years, has been named head coach at Idaho.

Ferreira, who guided the Roadrunners to a 100-13 record in three seasons, takes over an Idaho program that won four consecutive Big Sky Conference championships before moving to the Big West Conference, where it won the Eastern Division title last fall.

Ferreira replaces Tom Hilbert, who became head coach at Colorado State.

During his tenure at Cal State Bakersfield, Ferreira led his squad to its first national, regular-season No. 1 ranking. In 1994 and 1995, he was named California Collegiate Athletic Association coach of the year. He holds the best winning percentage by a Cal State Bakersfield coach.

Before joining the Roadrunner staff, Ferreira coached at Fresno State and Stanford. In addition to coaching, he is the author of a manual on development of a coaching philosophy, practice planning, technical skills and tactical strategies.

Bill Olsen, athletics director at Louisville since 1980, retired. Olsen, who has led the university's efforts to finance a new Cardinal stadium, will stay on at Louisville as a fund-raiser ... David Diles, director of athletics at St. Bonaventure since 1985, given additional duties as vice-president of the university ... Wil Jones given additional duties as athletics director at District of Columbia, succeeding Dwight Datcher, who became assistant AD at Georgetown. Jones will continue as head men's basketball coach. Jones' appointment was announced in conjunction with an announcement that the District of Columbia athletics program has been reinstated. The university announced earlier this year that athletics would be abolished at the end of the 1996-97 year because of budget constraints ... Adam Hertz appointed AD at Alvernia, succeeding Sandra Slabik, who resigned after six years as AD and field hockey coach. Hertz, who has been assistant AD and sports information director for the past year, will continue as men's and women's soccer coach ... Southeast Missouri State extended the contract of interim AD Carroll Williams through June 30, 1998 ... New Mexico State reassigned athletics director Al Gonzales to a position responsible for minority programs in the office of the associate academic vice-president ... Scott Woodard named AD at Western New Mexico.

Jack McCloskey appointed full-time associate athletics director at Alvernia. McCloskey has been on staff part time as men's basketball coach for the past six years ... Adam Brick promoted to associate AD for legal affairs at Georgetown. Brick has been a member of the athletics staff since 1986 and most recently was assistant AD for legal affairs.

Leslie Evans given additional duties as assistant AD and senior woman administrator at Redlands, succeeding Micki McAulay, who resigned from the post to concentrate on teaching. McAulay will continue as head women's basketball coach. Evans will continue to serve as head coach for the men's and women's swimming program and as assistant coach for the men's and women's water polo teams ... Andrew Greer, assistant AD and head men's basketball coach at Merchant Marine, resigned to become assistant men's basketball coach at Northern Illinois ... Baseball--John Schaly hired as head coach at Ashland. Schaly has been head coach for the past six years at St. Leo, where he won 30 or more games four times and 40 or more games twice ... Steve Jones named head coach at New Mexico Highlands after serving as an assistant coach since 1990 at UC Davis ... Scott Boone, head baseball coach at Wabash since 1986, resigned to become head football coach at Randolph-Macon. Boone also has been an assistant football coach at Wabash ... Tom Parkevich selected as head coach at Earlham. Parkevich, who also will be an assistant football coach, was head baseball coach and defensive coordinator at Blackburn College for the past four years ... After serving six months as interim head coach, Michael Martin named head coach at Arkansas-Monticello. He previously was an assistant coach at Louisiana Tech ... Percy Abell hired as head coach at Lynchburg, where he was a four-year standout on the baseball team. Abell has been coaching at the high-school level ... Wichita State signed Gene Stephenson to a five-year contract extension.

Baseball assistants--Northwestern State assistant coach Don Thomas joined the staff at Southern-Baton Rouge, succeeding Richard Gaines, who will remain with the team as a part-time assistant. Thomas spent two years as an assistant coach at Arkansas and two years as an assistant at Texarkana Junior College before joining the Northwestern State staff ... Jamal Davis hired as assistant coach at Coppin State. Davis was team captain for the Eagles in 1995, his senior year ... Jim Case named at Mississippi State ... Robert Jomes appointed assistant coach at Kean. He also will be offensive coordinator for the football team.

Men's basketball--Steve Robinson selected as head coach at Florida State. Robinson, who signed a seven-year contract with Tulsa earlier this year, guided the Golden Hurricane to a 46-18 record in his two seasons at Tulsa. Tulsa named Bill Self, head coach at Oral Roberts for the past four seasons, to succeed Robinson. Oral Roberts subsequently promoted assistant coach Barry Hinson to succeed Self. Hinson was an aide to Self for four seasons ... North Florida appointed Sidney Green as head coach. Green was head coach at Long Island-Southampton for the past two seasons, compiling a 29-27 record, and is a 10-year veteran of the NBA ... Horace Broadnax hired as head coach at Bethune-Cookman. Broadnax was an assistant at Bethune-Cookman and at Florida before becoming head coach at Valencia Community College in 1995.

Larry Hauser, who spent the past 14 years as an assistant coach at Santa Clara, named interim head coach at the school. He succeeds Mack Calvin ... Andrew Greer, head coach at Merchant Marine for the past four seasons, resigned to become an assistant coach at Northern Illinois ... Keith Brown, head coach at Colorado School of Mines since 1992, resigned to become an assistant coach at Cal State Bakersfield ... Tom Blake, head coach at Wheaton (Massachusetts) for the past three seasons, named assistant coach at Quinnipiac. He succeeds Jeff Maher, who joined the Washington State staff ... Northwood hired Bob Taylor ... Rob Evans given a two-year contract extension at Mississippi that will keep him at Ole Miss through the 2000-2001 season. Evans is 64-74 in five seasons, but the team's 20 wins last season were the most by a Mississippi team since 1938.

Men's basketball assistants--Tracy Dildy and Larry Harrison hired at DePaul. Dildy has been an assistant at Ball State for the past three seasons. Harrison was associate head coach for the past four seasons at Cincinnati and assistant coach for four seasons before that ... Jeff Strohm, assistant coach at Northern Illinois, resigned. Andrew Greer, former head coach at Merchant Marine, was named to succeed him ... Niagara promoted Tom Parrotta to full-time assistant, succeeding Desmond Oliver, who was named assistant coach at Texas A&M. Parrotta has served as Niagara's restricted-earnings coach for the past two seasons ... Jay Dull named assistant coach at Towson. Dull was head coach at Grand View College for the past four seasons ... Nathan Davis joined the Emory & Henry staff as assistant coach ... Kurtis Townsend and La Juan Lewis appointed at Eastern Kentucky. Townsend was an assistant for the past four seasons at California and Lewis was an assistant last season at Sullivan Business College.

Cal State Bakersfield named Keith Brown and Nicolas Colon as assistant coaches. Brown joins the staff as lead assistant after serving as head coach at Colorado School of Mines. Colon has coached at the high-school level ... James Jones hired as assistant coach at Ohio, succeeding Reggie Rankin, who left for Georgia. Jones has been an associate coach at Yale since 1995 ... Brannon Hays and John Peterson appointed at Metropolitan State. Hays most recently was an assistant coach for a professional basketball league in Australia. Peterson has been an assistant at San Francisco since 1993 ... Bill Holden selected as assistant coach at Harvard. He was an assistant for the past three years at Bentley and a part-time assistant at Harvard before that.

Hilliary Scott named as the top assistant coach at Roanoke, replacing Kevin Martin. Scott, a 1994 Roanoke graduate, spent the past four years playing professional basketball in Ireland and England ... Swede Trenkle appointed assistant coach at Pittsburg State, where he also will be head golf coach. Trenkle was a graduate assistant at Fort Hays State for the past two seasons ... Shane Garman selected as assistant coach at Francis Marion. Garman was an assistant last year at Citadel ... Chris Brower, an assistant for the past two seasons at Columbus State, hired at Lander ... Texas-San Antonio named Al Grushkin assistant coach, succeeding Jeremy Cox, who was named head coach at North Dakota State College of Science. Cox was an assistant at Texas-San Antonio for the past four years. Grushkin has been an assistant at Idaho State for five years ... San Jose State selected Gary Patterson as assistant coach. Patterson has coached at the high-school level.

Byron Jones and Anthony Barone named assistant coaches at Denver. Jones comes to Denver after two years as an assistant at Eastern Kentucky and Barone recently completed a master's degree at Ohio ... Larry Epperly named administrative assistant at Tennessee-Chattanooga. Epperly was the head coach at South Carolina-Aiken for 10 years before resigning earlier this year ... Thad Matta, a former Butler player, named assistant coach at his alma mater, succeeding Jay John, who became an assistant coach at Oregon. Matta was an assistant last season at Miami (Ohio).

Loyola (Maryland) named Darrell Brooks and Dave Wojcik as assistant coaches. Brooks has been an assistant at George Mason and Wojcik at Xavier. Also, the school announced the retention of Tom Sorboro, who served on the staff last season ... John Wade hired to replace Larry Reynolds as assistant coach at San Francisco. Wade served for the past two seasons as assistant coach at UC Santa Barbara. Chris Carlson was appointed interim assistant coach to succeed Wade at UC Santa Barbara ... Cameron Dollar appointed as assistant coach at UC Irvine. The 1997 graduate of UCLA played in the Bruin backcourt from 1993 through 1997 and was a member of UCLA's 1995 championship team ... John Treloar and Mike Davis hired at Indiana. Treloar coached the Connecticut Pride of the CBA last season and Davis was an assistant at Alabama ... Virginia State selected Peggy Davis as head coach. Davis has been head coach at Angelo State since 1990. Sarah Edelbrock was named to succeed Davis at Angelo State. Edelbrock has been assistant coach at Union (Kentucky) since 1992 ... Denise Curry hired as head coach at Cal State Fullerton. Curry was an assistant coach last season with the San Jose Lasers of the American Basketball League ... Luke Ruppel named at Mansfield ... Juliene Simpson hired at Marshall ... Bednarek has been an assistant at Iowa, Wichita State and Southern Illinois and head coach at George Washington ... Saint Louis hired Constance Lockett as restricted-earnings coach, succeeding Dan Rolfes, who was promoted to full-time assistant. Lockett was a member of the Saint Louis team before her graduation in 1996 ... Annette Jackson-Lowery named assistant coach at Nicholls State. Jackson-Lowrey most recently was a high-school coach ... West Virginia appointed Renee DeVarney, Dan Burt and Selese Neal as assistant coaches. DeVarney was head coach at Carlow College and Burt was assistant coach at Shepherd. Neal, who played for the Mountaineers from 1989 through 1994, has coached at the high-school level ... Jessica Cunningham named assistant coach at Rose-Hulman. Men's and women's cross country--Brian Cole appointed head coach of men's and women's cross country and track and field at Ohio Northern. Cole was head coach at Methodist for the past five years. Jennifer Jacobsen was appointed to succeed Cole at Methodist. She was an assistant men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field coach at Grinnell last season ... Deann Schlobohm named to resurrect the women's cross country program at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Schlobohm will head the first Toros squad since the sport was disbanded in 1984 ... Lehman did not renew the contract of Joe Sciarrone, head men's and women's track and cross country coach ... Kirk Elias hired as cross country and track and field coach at Arkansas-Little Rock ... St. John Fisher hired John Loncz as cross country coach.

Men's and women's cross country assistant--Caroline Spencer appointed associate head coach at Xavier. Spencer has been assistant director of recreational sports at Xavier since 1996.

Field hockey--Lynette Kidder, an assistant field hockey coach at Harvard the past three years, named head coach at Towson ... Pamela Fischer, a lecturer, teacher and coach since 1973, selected as head field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at Mercyhurst. Fischer will guide the field hockey in its inaugural season this fall ... Sandra Slabik resigned as head coach at Alvernia. She has been athletics director and field hockey coach for the past six years ... Kathy Satterley appointed head coach at Nazareth.

Football--Bryant named Jim Miceli as head coach to guide the Bulldogs when they kick off their inaugural season in 1999. Miceli has been an assistant coach at Maryland for the past four years ... Scott Boone appointed head coach at Randolph-Macon. Boone has been an assistant football coach at Wabash since 1983. He also has been head baseball coach there ... William Paterson hired Jack Peavey ... Villanova extended the contract of Andy Talley through 1999-2000.

Football assistants--Defiance announced the resignation of assistant head coach/defensive line coach Phil Burnett, who will have similar duties at California (Pennsylvania) ... Courtney Messingham named offensive coordinator at Truman State, succeeding Jay Johnson, who joined the staff at Kansas. Messingham has been running backs coach for the past two seasons ... John Pierce hired as running backs coach at Pittsburg State. Pierce returns to Pittsburg State after coaching for two years at the high-school level. He previously coached at the university from 1989 to 1994 ... Rose-Hulman appointed David Milavickas as defensive line coach. Milavickas has been coaching at the high-school level ... Gary Pillar named graduate assistant coach at California (Pennsylvania). Pillar was a volunteer coach this past spring at the university.

Muhlenberg announced its football staff: Dave Haninchick, an intern at Lafayette in 1996, named defensive line coach; Dick Ortwein, defensive line coach at Lebanon Valley last season, named running backs coach; John Troxell, assistant defensive backs coach at Columbia for the past three years, named quarterbacks/wide receivers coach; and Tony Villante, a high-school coach, named defensive line coach ... Perry Goodell named defensive coordinator and Nick Baiz named secondary coach at Arkansas-Monticello. Goodell was offensive line coach at Henderson State for seven years and Baiz spent the last year as a graduate assistant at Northeast Louisiana.

Chuck Maloy hired as assistant coach at Dickinson, where he also will be head men's lacrosse coach ... Tom Parkevich appointed assistant football coach at Earlham, where he also will be head baseball coach. Parkevich held the same positions at Blackburn College for the past four years ... Paul LaPolice hired as a full-time assistant coach for quarterbacks and receivers at Rennselaer. LaPolice spent the past two years as wide receivers coach at New Hampshire ... Tom Kerr named defensive coordinator at Concordia (Illinois), where he also will be head track coach ... Purdue announced the resignation of assistant coach Larry Korpitz for medical reasons. Korpitz, who joined the Boilermakers in December as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, served in the same positions at Wyoming for the previous six years ... Howard Feggins, an assistant at Wingate for the past two seasons, hired at Miami (Ohio) ... Robert Jomes appointed offensive coordinator at Kean. He also will be an assistant baseball coach ... Matt Larsen appointed wide receivers coach at Stony Brook ... Cornell named Irvin Pankey as offensive line coach ... Tom Herman appointed offensive coordinator at Gannon ... Men's and women's golf--Swede Trenkle named head coach at Pittsburg State. He was an assistant basketball coach for the past two seasons at Fort Hays State and also will be an assistant basketball coach at Pittsburg State ... Southern Mississippi promoted Steve Johnson to head women's golf coach. Johnson has served as assistant coach since 1993 ... Mike Rhoades appointed women's coach at Missouri-Kansas City, replacing Bob Benzer, who retired. Rhoades is president at Blue Hills Country Club in Kansas City, Missouri ... Sara Berlin selected as head women's coach at San Francisco. The 1996 graduate of Oregon State served as the Beavers' assistant coach last season after playing varsity golf from 1991 to 1996. Berlin replaces Mark Priede ... Yale named alumnus Heather Daly-Donofrio as head women's coach, succeeding Amy Huether. Daly-Donofrio plays on the Futures Professional Golf Tour ... Jim Shaw given additional duties as men's golf coach at Rose-Hulman. Shaw is men's basketball coach at the school ... Kent Beatty appointed men's and women's golf coach at Western New Mexico.

Women's gymnastics--Meg Stephenson promoted to cohead coach at Minnesota. Stephenson joins Jim Stephenson, who has been head coach since 1992. Meg Stephenson has been assistant coach for the past five years ... Tanya Chaplin appointed head coach at Oregon State.

Men's ice hockey assistant--Peter Wilkinson, a four-year letter winner in hockey at Western Michigan, named assistant coach at Michigan Tech. Wilkinson coached at the high-school level last season.

Men's lacrosse--Chuck Maloy named head coach at Dickinson, succeeding Mike Yesalonia. Maloy also will be an assistant football coach. Most recently he was a graduate assistant football coach at Mississippi. Maloy was a member of two national-championship lacrosse teams while a student at Hobart.

Women's lacrosse--Pamela Fischer appointed head coach at Mercyhurst, where she also will be head field hockey coach. Fischer, a lecturer, teacher and coach since 1973, takes over a one-year old program.

Women's rowing--Ellen Minzner hired as head coach of the novice rowing program at Kansas State. Minzner has coached at the Winsor School in Boston since 1991.

Men's and women's soccer--Jamie Orejan named head men's and women's coach at Loras, succeeding Eric Johnson, who became head men's coach at Western Illinois. Orejan has led Southern Mississippi club teams since 1992 ... Kim LeMere resigned after one season as head women's coach at St. Bonaventure to become assistant coach at Colorado ... Bill Lytton hired as coordinator for men's and women's soccer at Millsaps, succeeding David Forsythe, who became director of coaching at Pensacola (Florida) Soccer Club. Lytton became a part-time coach at Millsaps in 1995 ... William "Lin" Outten appointed head men's soccer coach at Washington (Maryland). Outten, who also will be head women's softball coach, has been assistant soccer coach at Old Dominion since 1990 and was named interim head coach there in January ... Ted Priestly selected as men's soccer coach at Massachusetts-Lowell ... Woody Sherwood appointed women's soccer coach at Towson.

Men's soccer assistant--Fred Hibbs hired as an assistant at Xavier, succeeding Dave Schureck, who resigned. Hibbs spent the past six seasons as an assistant at Miami (Ohio).

Women's soccer assistant--Kristian Sundborn named assistant coach at Colorado College. Sundborn was an assistant men's soccer coach at the school in 1996 ... Stacy Strauss hired assistant coach at Dartmouth.

Women's softball--Julie Brzezinski resigned as head coach at Campbell after eight years. Brzezinski guided the Lady Camels to a 245-195-1 record and a pair of conference championships ... William "Lin" Outten hired as head coach at Washington (Maryland), where he also will be head men's soccer coach. Outten played varsity baseball and soccer at Mary Washington ... Moira Breen Long appointed head women's softball and volleyball coach at Dickinson. Long, who replaces Ann Haynam as head softball coach, was interim head coach at Springfield ... Geri-Lyn Dubay named interim head coach at Bates after three years as assistant women's basketball coach at the school. Dubay takes over from Sherry Deschaine, who retired after leading the Bates squad since 1977.

Women's softball assistant--Redlands announced the resignation of assistant coach Paula Tezak. She also was head women's volleyball coach.

Men's and women's swimming and diving--Don Galluzzi hired as head coach for the new women's swimming program at Stevens Tech ... Lance Brennan named men's and women's swimming coach at Butler. Berman spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Ashland ... Bob Steele hired as men's swimming coach and women's water polo coach at Cal State Bakersfield.

Men's and women's swimming assistants--Katherine Veazey named assistant women's swimming coach at Harvard. Veazey returns to Harvard after earning a master's degree at Maryland. She was a four-year letter winner at Harvard before graduation in 1995 ... Steve Crocker hired as assistant coach for the newly combined men's and women's swim programs at Western Kentucky. Crocker's hiring coincides with the addition of women's swimming as a varsity sport. Crocker was a standout on the men's swimming team as an undergraduate Hilltopper and most recently has been coaching in Carlsbad, California.

Men's and women's tennis--Todd Helbling, assistant coach at Washington (Maryland), appointed head men's and women's coach at Slippery Rock. Helbling, who spent the past six years as an assistant at Washington, succeeds Matt Meredith, who was interim coach for the 1997 season ... San Francisco selected Peter Bartlett as head men's tennis coach. Bartlett has served as assistant coach at the university since 1994 ... Lisa Schuito hired at Missouri-St. Louis to lead the women's tennis team back to a full varsity schedule this fall for the first time since the 1993-94 academic year ... Sherry Kennemer, women's tennis coach at North Alabama since 1993, relinquished her coaching duties to concentrate on new responsibilities as assistant to the athletics director. Brice Bishop, former all-American tennis player at North Alabama, was hired to succeed Kennemer. Bishop also will coach the men's team, succeeding Larry Thompson, who retired. Bishop coached women's tennis and cross country at North Alabama from 1988 until moving to Union (Tennessee) in 1990. He has been men's tennis coach at Union for the past seven years ... Seton Hall announced the resignation of men's tennis coach Bill Wing and women's tennis coach Kevin McGlynn. McGlynn compiled a 59-28 dual-match record in eight years at Seton Hall and Wing guided the men's program the past five years, compiling a 26-48 record ... Cal State Northridge announced the retirement of head women's coach Tony Davila ... Washington announced the resignation of head women's coach Lisa Moldrem.

Men's and women's track and field--Adalberto Alonso named head coach of men's and women's indoor and outdoor track at Stevens Tech ... Brian Cole appointed head coach of men's and women's cross country and track at Ohio Northern. Cole was head coach at Methodist for the past five years. Jennifer Jacobsen was appointed to succeed Cole at Methodist. Jacobsen was an assistant men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field coach at Grinnell last season ... Tom Kerr hired as head track and field coach at Concordia (Illinois), succeeding Mark Reade. CONFERENCES

Ronald Calgaard, president at Trinity (Texas), will serve as chair of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Board of Directors for the 1997-98 academic year. Serving with Calgaard on the executive committee are Ann Die, president at Hendrix, and Roy Shilling Jr., president at Southwestern (Texas). Bob King, athletics director at Trinity (Texas), will be chair of the athletics directors council.

The Mid-Continent Conference extended the contract of Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher through the 1999-2000 academic year. Steinbrecher has been commissioner since November 1994. The conference also appointed Philip Dlatt and Mark Simpson as assistant commissioners and announced the elevation of Cindy Harris to associate commissioners. Dlatt, the conference's marketing director since 1995, will be assistant commissioner for marketing. Simpson, media relations director since August 1996, will be assistant commissioner for media relations. Harris, assistant commissioner for compliance and championships since July 1995, will continue with those duties in her new role.

The Patriot League announced several staff changes: Patrick Summers, an intern during the 1996-97 year, named to the newly created position of coordinator of championships; Todd Newcomb, assistant executive director for media relations since 1989, promoted to associate executive director for media relations; Sue Hofmann, assistant director of media relations for the past six years, named assistant executive director for communications; business manager Deb Bogert promoted to executive assistant; and Tim Parker, assistant executive director for championships and compliance for the past two years, promoted to associate executive director for championships and compliance. Also, Dan Ghormley, assistant commissioner for internal affairs for the past eight years, resigned to pursue other opportunities.

John Dzik named vice-president of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference. Dzik is director of athletics at Cabrini.

The North Central Conference announced that Noel Olson has agreed to continue as commissioner through September 30 while the search for a successor continues. Olson had intended to retire June 30.

The Western Athletic Conference announced several staff changes: David Chafflin promoted to director of communications, Lanette Freeman promoted to director of championships, Steve Macy promoted to associate director of marketing and promotions, and Vicki Boillot promoted to associate director of communications.

NCAA NATIONAL OFFICE

Vanessa Abell and Shawna Hansen hired as publications editors at the NCAA national office. Abell was a sports information administrative secretary for Navy during the past year and was assistant to the sports information director at Maryland before that. Hansen has been assistant executive director of the Tucson (Arizona) local organizing committee for the 1997 U.S. National Senior Sports Classic VI since 1994 ... Vikki Watson, assistant editor of The NCAA News since 1992, resigned to become accept a position at Sprint in Overland Park, Kansas.

CORRECTIONS

The name of an NCAA postgraduate scholar was spelled incorrectly in an article in the July 7 issue of The NCAA News. Kelly Frazer of Georgia was named as a scholar.

The name of the institution that men's golfer Jason Bowie attends was spelled incorrectly in a listing of Division III golf all-American scholars that appeared in the July 7 issue of the News. Bowie is a student at Binghamton.

Selected to four-year terms on the NACDA Executive Committee in the university division were Bobby May of Rice and Judy Rose of North Carolina-Charlotte. Mike Jarvis of George Washington, Lon Kruger of Illinois and Los Angeles Lakers head coach Del Harris selected as assistant coaches for the 1998 USA Men's World Championship Team by USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team Committee. The world championship will be July 29-August 9, 1998, in Athens, Greece.

The natatorium at DePauw has been named for Charles Erdmann, former swimming, baseball and tennis coach at the university. Erdmann, who joined the school's staff in 1946, was a coach and physical education teacher for 50 years.

Auburn pitcher/outfielder Tim Hudson named winner of the 1997 Rotary Smith Award as college baseball's player of the year.

Loyola (Maryland) head women's lacrosse coach Diane Aikens named national coach of the year by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association. It was the second consecutive coach-of-the-year recognition for Aikens, who just completed her ninth year as Loyola head coach.


DEATHS

Jerry Doggett, a longtime radio announcer who once announced Southern Methodist basketball games and Southwest Conference football games, died July 7 in California. He was 80. Doggett announced Southwest Conference football games from 1942 to 1956 and Southern Methodist basketball games from 1946 to 1956. He also called the action at the Cotton and Sugar Bowls. Doggett broadcast Los Angeles Dodgers games from 1956 to 1987 and also announced Ryder Cup golf.

Former Central Missouri State football player Walter Rhone died July 3 at his home in Wisconsin after suffering an aneurysm. Rhone played for the Mules from 1969 through 1972 and was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams, but played in the World Football League for the Chicago Fire.

Missouri-Rolla soccer player Pat Boyce died July 4 from injuries received in an automobile accident in central Illinois. Boyce was 18. As a freshman last year, he was the Miners' second-leading scorer with six goals and four assists.

Julie Reitan, a member of the Arizona softball team, died June 27 at her home in Tucson, Arizona. She was 21. Officials attributed her death to complications from diabetes.
