Western Carolina names volleyball coach
Michelle Hansen has been appointed women's volleyball coach at Western Carolina.
For the past two years, Hansen was assistant volleyball coach at Utah State with responsibility for the team's outside hitters and recruiting.
Hansen spent two years as head coach at Lake Superior State before moving to Utah State. Before that, she served as a graduate assistant at Idaho State.
Hansen played volleyball from 1986 to 1989 at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where she capped her collegiate playing career with selection to the Division I all-America team. She still holds nine Cal Poly San Luis Obispo records and twice was named the school's female athlete of the year.
In addition to her collegiate career, Hansen has extensive national and international experience. She toured Canada with the Women's National Olympic Team and played professionally in Switzerland. In 1996, she competed for the National Volleyball Association regular-season champion Utah Predators.

Humphreys, a standout baseball player for Hampden-Sydney before pitching in the major leagues from 1962 to 1971, currently is coordinator of instruction for the Milwaukee Brewers ... Fred Applin named to the Wake Forest staff. Applin was head coach at Hampton from 1995 to 1997 ... Duquesne selected Kelly Fitzpatrick as an assistant coach. She was head coach of the Long Island Silver Bullets girls' AAU team this past season ... Stephanie McCormick hired at North Carolina-Wilmington ... Donna Wise selected at Lock Haven ... Men's and women's cross country--Mike Worrell, who coached the women's soccer team at Illinois College last fall, named men's and women's cross country coach at the school. Worrell will continue to serve as head coach of the men's basketball team ... 1997 Shenandoah graduate Brendan Chamberlain named head cross country and assistant men's lacrosse coach at his alma mater. He will have additional duties as assistant sports information director ... Marv Frye retired as head men's track and cross country coach at Ohio Wesleyan. Frye has been head coach since 1960, making his coaching tenure the second-longest in school history.
Football--Brendan Flaherty, head coach at St. Joseph's (Indiana), hired as defensive line coach at Kent. Flaherty served as head coach last season after working as defensive coordinator the previous year.
Football assistants--Rod Boykin named defensive backs coach at Wittenberg. Boykin has been a graduate assistant coach at Illinois for the past two seasons ... Darin Ward named restricted-earnings coach at Rhode Island, working with offensive linemen and film analysis ... Montana named Corey Batoon, Craig Dickenson, Carl Franks and Lance Robinson as restricted-earnings coaches ... Bob Gould hired as offensive assistant at Westminster (Missouri). Men's and women's golf--Rob Kulton appointed golf coach at Shenandoah, succeeding Dave Arehart, who resigned to concentrate on his duties as assistant professional at Winchester Country Club. Kulton has coached the Shenandoah men's soccer team for several years.
Women's gymnastics--Southeast Missouri State announced the resignation of Bill Hopkins.
Men's ice hockey--Paul Pearl hired as head coach at Holy Cross ... Rensselaer extended the contract of Dan Fridgen through June 30, 2000.
Men's lacrosse assistants--Frank Vitolo appointed associate head coach at Pace ... Shenandoah named 1997 graduate Brenda Chamberlain as assistant men's lacrosse coach and head cross country coach ... Paul Perdue hired at St. Joseph's (Pennsylvania).
Women's lacrosse--Sarah Nelson named at Vermont ... Scott Musa hired as head coach at Shenandoah. Musa coached the team to a 9-2 record this past season as interim coach.
Women's rowing--Christine Wilson, who rowed and coached two crews at Yale, will return to the school as head coach of women's varsity crew. Wilson has been an assistant heavyweight men's crew coach at Cornell for the past two years. She succeeds Wendy Davis, who resigned.
Men's and women's soccer--Jeff Hamilton named head women's coach at Illinois College, replacing Mike Worrell, who became head men's and women's cross country coach at the school ... Lenny Paoletti appointed head women's coach at Shenandoah, where he also will be head men's and women's tennis coach. Paoletti was head women's club soccer coach at Western Carolina ... Bob Culbreath hired as men's and women's coach at Southwest Baptist. Culbreath has been women's soccer coach at College of the Southwest since May 1994 ... Shelley Smith named head women's coach at Rhode Island, succeeding Karen Parker ... David Kreger selected as men's coach at Canisius, succeeding Greg Reeds, who resigned after seven years to become chair of the physical education program at the school ... Women's soccer assistant--Ryan Barke, a 1997 Illinois College graduate, named assistant coach for women's soccer and softball at his alma mater. He will continue to serve as assistant coach of the women's basketball team.
Women's softball--Lisa Bocash appointed head coach at Franklin Pierce, where she also will be assistant athletic trainer. Bocash has been head softball coach at Southern Vermont since February 1995.
Women's softball assistant--Ryan Barke, a 1997 Illinois College graduate, hired as assistant coach at his alma mater.
Women's swimming and diving assistant--Heather Johnston appointed full-time assistant coach at Oregon State. Johnston will begin her third year with the women's swimming program this fall but her first as a full-time assistant.
Men's and women's tennis--Lenny Paoletti named head men's and women's coach at Shenandoah. He also will be head women's soccer coach ... Karen Page appointed head women's coach at Hope, succeeding Kathy Van Tubbergen, who retired after the 1997 season. Van Tubbergen guided Hope to a 124-72 dual match record in 10 seaons. Page serves as director of the college's DeWitt Tennis Center ... Duke named Jay Lapidus director of tennis and Jamie Ashworth head women's coach ... Michael Dowd appointed women's coach at Pennsylvania ... Southern Mississippi promoted Chris Hayden from assistant to head women's tennis coach.

Wrestling--Central (Iowa) appointed Matt Diehl head coach ... Mark Manning hired at Northern Iowa.

Academic support coordinator--Jennifer Dullea named coordinator of academic support services at San Francisco. Dullea has worked as a graduate assistant in the academic services for student-athletes department at Providence since July 1996.
Athletics administrative assistant--Shannon Jennison appointed administrative assistant for varsity basketball and football at Merchant Marine. She will have additional duties in the office of athletics development and marketing, where she has served during the past year as an intern.
Communications director--Matt Winkler appointed director of athletics communications at American. Winkler has spent the past four years in the American athletics department, the past two as sports information director and the first two as assistant SID.
Development director--Kevin McGiniss named director of athletics development at Merchant Marine. McGinniss has been athletics director and men's basketball coach at Lehman.
Marketing and promotions director--Bart LaRocca, marketing and promotions director as Texas-San Antonio, resigned to accept a position with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. LaRocca joined the Texas-San Antonio staff last summer.
Sports information director--Mark Bockelman, sports information director at North Carolina State, promoted to assistant to the athletics director for special projects. Joan von Thron, assistant SID, was named interim sports information director at the school ... John Leisering appointed SID at Mercyhurst. Leisering has been at Mercyhurst since 1986, serving for three years as AD and most recently as hockey sports information director and general manager of the college's FM radio station ... Missouri Western State SID Mark Johnson resigned to accept a position with Boyd Gaming Corporation in Las Vegas. Johnson had been an SID for 16 years at five colleges ... Kevin Carmody hired as SID at Hardin-Simmons.
Sports information assistant--Craig Rybczynski hired as assistant SID at Mercyhurst. He wrote for the college newspaper and did play-by-play for the ice hockey team while a student at Mercyhurst.
Sports medicine director--Boston College selected Steve Bushee as director of sports medicine/athletic trainer.
Strength and conditioning assistant--Jeff Barnard hired as assistant strength and conditioning coordinator at Wake Forest. He served as a graduate assistant coach in strength and conditioning at Illinois State.
Athletic trainer--Carrie Graham named athletic trainer at Dartmouth.
Assistant athletic trainers--Lisa Bocash hired as assistant trainer at Franklin Pierce. She also will serve as head softball coach ... Gregg Graff named assistant trainer at Oregon State, replacing Brian Sanders. Graff served as director of sports medicine at Kansas State for the past year.
CONFERENCES
Newly elected Southeastern Conference officers for 1997-98 are Joe Johnson, Tennessee, president; William Muse, Auburn, vice-president; Pat Culbertson, LSU, secretary; and Robert Khayat of Mississippi, Gene Marsh of Alabama, June Stewart of Vanderbilt and Vince Dooley of Georgia, executive committee members.
Jeff Fanter named the first full-time Eastern College Athletic Conference ice hockey commissioner. For the past year, Fanter has been assistant director of media relations and coordinator of athletics publications and media guides at Indiana.
Thomas Bonerbo appointed assistant commissioner for communications at the Mid-American Conference. Bonerbo joins the MAC after serving as director of athletics communications at Fairleigh Dickinson for the past two years.
The Atlantic 10 Conference announced the resignation of Cindy Mazda as assistant commissioner.
NOTABLES
Matt Haugen, men's cross country coach at St. Olaf, named head coach at the USA Junior National Triathlon Team camp July 1-18 at the Olympic Training Center in San Diego. Haugen will coach the top eight women and top eight men ages 16-20 at the camp and accompany them to Australia for the 1997 World Championships in November.
Mark McCormack of William and Mary and Paula Zahn of Stephens named recipients of the Rolex Achievement Awards by the College Golf Foundation. McCormack played No. 1 for the men's golf team at William and Mary before his graduation in 1951. Zahn was a four-year varsity letterwinner at Stephens before graduating in 1978.
Athletics directors of America East have named the conference's Commissioner's Cup after retiring commissioner Stuart P. Haskell Jr. The Commissioner's Cup is awarded to the conference member that accumulates the most points through standings in individual and team championship sports competitions. Haskell is in his 10th and final year as commissioner.
Jim Jorgensen, commissioner of the Northern California Athletic Conference, awarded the Amateur Football Award by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Sacramento Valley Chapter. The award is presented to a person who has made a positive contribution to the advancement of amateur football through time and effort.
