Track athletes lead spring Academic All-America teams
Track and field athletes -- including a Divisoin II heptathlon champion -- lead the GTE Academic All-America spring men's and women's at-large teams.
Heptathlete Amy Bippert, who won her event at this year's Division II Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, is the women's GTE Academic All-America Team Member of the Year in the college division. Bippert is a senior kinesiology major at Angelo State.
Team members of the year in the university division are Scott Keane, a senior mechanical engineering major at Cincinnati, and Janet Blomstedt, a junior business administration major at Nebraska.
The men's team member of the year in the college division is Ryan Cheney, a senior communications/Christian ministry major at George Fox.
The GTE Academic All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member College Sports Information Directors of America. Nominees must be a varsity starter or key reserve and must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.200 (4.000 scale).
