Buscher chosen for head coaching job

Paula Buscher, an assistant coach at Nebraska-Omaha for the past nine years, has been named head women's basketball coach at Mankato State.

Buscher is a 1986 graduate of Southwest Missouri State, where she played basketball for one year and softball for two years. She spent the previous two years as a two-sport athlete at Illinois Central.

Buscher was a member of the 1982 national-championship junior college women's basketball team at Illinois Central and is a member of the Peoria (Illinois) Sports Hall of Fame.

In 1987, Buscher was a member of the United States softball team that toured Taiwan and Japan.

She earned a master's degree in physical education at Illinois State, where she served as a graduate assistant with the women's basketball program beginning in 1986. She joined the Nebraska-Omaha staff in 1988.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Marie McDemmond, vice-president for finance and chief operating officer at Florida Atlantic, appointed president at Norfolk State. McDemmond succeeds Harrison Wilson, who resigned after 22 years.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Dave Braine, athletics director at Virginia Tech, hired as AD at Georgia Tech. Braine has been AD at Virginia Tech since 1988 ... Jeff Fogelson, AD at Xavier since 1984, given additional duties as associate vice-president ... Scott Barnes named athletics director at Humboldt State.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Villanova promoted associate athletics director Tim Hofferth to senior associate AD. He will continue to focus on revenue-enhancement efforts. Also, associate AD David White was given additional responsibilities as administrator for 14 varsity teams and for football and men's basketball game management.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Vince Nicastro, director of ticket operations, promoted to assistant athletics director at Villanova. Nicastro will serve as coaches' contact for nine teams and oversee facility management ... Stan Exeter named assistant AD at Beaver, where he also will be head baseball coach. Exeter has been assistant baseball coach at Keystone Junior College and Misericordia ... Craig Poisson hired as assistant AD at Springfield.

COACHES

Baseball--Quinnipiac selected Joe Mattei as head coach. Mattei served as interim coach for the 1997 season and was named Northeast-10 Conference coach of the year after leading the Braves to their first tournament title since 1988 ... Salvatore Bando Jr. hired as head coach at Wisconsin-Parkside. Bando has played professionally in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system ... Beaver appointed Stan Exeter as head coach. Exeter, who also will serve as assistant athletics director at the school, has been an assistant baseball coach at Keystone Junior College and Misericordia ... Hill Denson, head coach at Southern Mississippi for the past 13 seasons, resigned. Corky Palmer, assistant head coach and pitching coach, was promoted to succeed Denson ... Mike Bianco named head coach at McNeese State ... Princeton hired Scott Bradley as head coach ... East Carolina announced the resignation of Gary Overton effective June 30 ... Ron Polk resigned at Mississippi State. Pat McMahon was named to replace Polk, who led teams from Georgia Southern and Mississippi State to the College World Series during his coaching career.

Men's basketball--Tim Jankovich, head coach at North Texas for the past four years, resigned. He posted a 53-57 record.

Men's basketball assistants--Larry Farmer hired at Rhode Island ... Jerry Waters named assistant coach at Georgia ... Rider appointed Jim Engles as assistant coach ... Thad Fitzpatrick released from his duties as assistant coach at Alabama ... Martin McGillan named assistant coach at Citadel ... Richmond appointed Matt Brown assistant coach.

Women's basketball--Carrie Kaifes, head coach at Missouri Southern State for the past two seasons, hired as an assistant coach at Missouri-Kansas City ... Janine Hoffman named head coach at Millsaps. She also will serve as head women's golf coach. Hoffman spent the past two years as recruiting coordinator and assistant basketball coach at Texas-San Antonio ... David "Rusty" Ponton named head coach at Grambling ... Sarah Evans-Moore resigned at Marshall ... Erika Notzke appointed head coach at Sam Houston State ... Kris Ruffo hired as head coach at Lenoir-Rhyne ... UC Riverside announced that Debi Woelke resigned to accept a similar job at Fullerton Community College ... Jon Herbrechtsmeyer named head coach at Cornell College.

Women's basketball assistants--Cynthia Sperry and Nancy Beatty hired as assistant coaches at Akron. Sperry was an assistant at Wooster last season. Beatty has been a head high-school coach ... Carlene Mitchell named at Missouri-Kansas City. She was a volunteer assistant coach at the high-school level last season and was captain of the Kansas State basketball team in 1996, her senior year ... Vic Schaefer appointed assistant coach at Arkansas ... Austin Peay State announced the resignation of assistant coach Mark Nareau ... Dana Eikenberg selected as assistant coach at Iowa ... Rondre Jackson named assistant coach at Loyola Marymount.

Men's and women's cross country--Fred Binggell, head cross country and track and field coach at Virginia since 1986, resigned to take a position with the Missouri State High School Activities Association ... Sandra Fowler hired as women's cross country and track coach at Alabama.

Football assistants--Joel Quattrone promoted to defensive coordinator at Dickinson ... Southeast Missouri State appointed Jeff Richards offensive line coach and Roscoe Echols offensive backfield coach ... Chris Lancaster named offensive line coach at Sam Houston State.

Men's golf--Brian Cleland named men's golf coach at American International.

Women's golf--Janine Hoffman named head coach at Millsaps. She also will serve as head women's basketball coach. Hoffman spent the past two years as recruiting coordinator and assistant basketball coach at Texas-San Antonio.

Men's ice hockey--Roger Grillo appointed head coach at Brown ... Al MacCormick, head men's ice hockey coach at Cortland State for 16 years, has been named head coach at Lebanon Valley effective in September. MacCormick will organize a team that will begin play in 1998-99.

Men's ice hockey assistant--Brian McCloskey hired at Dartmouth.

Men's lacrosse--Jon Lantzy hired as St. Andrew's Presbyterian.

Men's soccer--Todd Saldana chosen as head men's soccer coach at Loyola Marymount. Saldana was head men's and women's soccer coach at Cal Poly Pomona for the past two years.

Women's soccer--Mel Buckmaster named head women's coach at St. Norbert. Buckmaster has 27 years of coaching experience, the past seven at the high-school level ... Mike Alosco, head women's soccer coach at Manhattan since it began Division I play in 1991, resigned. His record was 44-54-5 ... Paul Rosenbrook appointed head coach at Hope, succeeding Stein Slette, who resigned from the college faculty at the conclusion of the 1996-97 academic year. Rosenbrook, a 1996 Hope graduate, lettered four years on the Hope men's soccer team and was an assistant coach for the men's team last fall.

Women's soccer assistants--Katharin Roth named assistant coach at California ... Kim Brown, an assistant coach at Rhode Island for the past four years, named assistant coach at Brown.

Women's softball--St. Peter's announced the resignation of Rich Gilberto ... Melody Cope resigned as head coach at North Carolina-Greensboro.

Women's softball assistant--Notre Dame hired Deanna May as assistant coach.

Men's and women's swimming assistant--Ron Farina appointed assistant swimming coach at Virginia Tech.

Women's tennis--Syracuse suspended Jesse Dwire, head women's coach, without pay for three months for violation of school policies.

Men's and women's track and field--Fred Binggell, head track and field and cross country coach at Virginia since 1986, resigned to take a position with the Missouri State High School Activities Association ... Scott Strand, head coach at Alabama-Birmingham for the past two seasons, resigned. Strand was a part-time assistant in 1993 and 1994 before assuming full-time status in 1995.

Women's volleyball--Leslie "Maureen" Odland named head volleyball coach at Hope, replacing Karla Wolters. Wolters, who will continue to coach the women's softball team, compiled a 91-68 mark in five seasons at Hope. Odland has served as an assistant women's volleyball coach at the University of Guelph in Ontario since 1995 ... Gail Wasmus hired for a second stint as head coach at New York Tech. Wasmus was head coach at the school from 1976 to 1988, during which time she also was head women's basketball coach and women's athletics director at New York Tech ... Mike Swan, head women's volleyball coach at Manchester for the past three years, resigned to become an assistant coach at Connecticut.

Women's volleyball assistants--Mike Barnes and Mike Swan hired as assistant coaches at Connecticut. Barnes was athletics director at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans for the past three years. Swan was head coach at Manchester for the past three years ... Shannon Tuttle named assistant coach at Kent. She was an assistant coach last year at Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Wrestling--John Hangey appointed head coach at Bucknell.

STAFF

Intramurals director--Allen Gibson, assistant director of tickets at Villanova, named intramurals director at the school. Gibson succeeds Justin Sell, who became director of ticket operations at the school.

Marketing and promotions director--Bart LaRocca, athletics marketing and promotions director at Texas-San Antonio, resigned to accept a position with the FBI.

Sports information director--Jim Strick, a 1997 St. Norbert graduate, hired as sports information director at his alma mater. Strick had served as student SID since December.

Sports information assistants--Brett Sowell named assistant sports information director at Wake Forest ... Joanna Sparkman appointed assistant SID at East Carolina.

Ticket operations--Villanova announced several moves in its ticket operations. Vince Nicastro, director of ticket operations, was promoted to assistant athletics director. Justin Sell, Villanova intramurals director, was named to succeed Nicastro. Mark Fink, an intern, was named assistant director of tickets, succeeding Allen Gibson, who became intramurals director.

CONFERENCES

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference extended the contract of commissioner Richard Ensor through June 30, 2000. The conference also promoted Karin Torchia from director of championships to assistant commissioner. Also, Julie Christie was selected as the league's administrative fellow. Christie will focus on marketing of the conference's women's basketball tournament. She formerly worked with the Australian Olympic Committee at the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference officers for 1997-98 are Rev. Vincent Cooke, Canisius, president; Rev. Harold Ridley, Loyola (Maryland), vice-president; Eugene Doris, Fairfield, Committee on Athletics Administration chair; and Joyce Legere, Siena, vice-chair of the athletics administration committee.

The Trans America Athletic Conference elected officers for the 1997-98 year: Steve Sloan, Central Florida, president; Jeff Altier, Stetson, vice-president; and Blaine Hughes, Georgia State, secretary. New board members are Tom Collins, Campbell; Hope Davis, Jacksonsville State; and Bobby Pope, Mercer.

ASSOCIATIONS

Kelly Brown, head women's swimming coach at New York University, elected to the board of directors of the College Swim Coaches Association of America. Brown will serve as the representative from Division III women's teams.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS

Texas-Pan American announced it is withdrawing from the Sun Belt Conference effective July 1, 1998. The announcement came at the conclusion of the conference's spring meetings. Texas-Pan American joins Jacksonville and Lamar in leaving the conference after the 1997-98 season.

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced it has added Quinnipiac as a member of its men's lacrosse league for the 1999 season. The conference also announced it will add women's outdoor track and field as a championship sport for 1997-98.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference announced the admittance of Norfolk State as a member effective in fall 1997.


NOTABLES

Lance Berkman, standout first baseman at Rice, named college baseball player of the year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Berkman also has been named Western Athletic Conference player of the year.

The American Baseball Coaches Association named its 1997 All-America College Division Players of the Year: J. D. Drew, junior centerfielder at Florida State, Division I; Steve Gotowala, senior first baseman at Cal State Chico, Division II; and Joe Thomas, senior pitcher/first baseman at Marietta, Division III (second consecutive year).
