Ithaca selects Alden as athletics director
Elizabeth "Betsy" Alden, athletics director at San Francisco State, has been selected as AD at Ithaca effective July 16.
Alden will succeed Robert Deming, who is retiring after 17 years at the helm of Ithaca's athletics department.
Alden was named AD at San Francisco State in 1994. While there, she planned and implemented a department-wide gender-equity plan and helped develop a long-range plan for the athletics department.
She is president of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators and is active in the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Alden is a member of the NCAA Women's Soccer Committee.
A graduate of Cortland State, Alden earned a master's degree in physical education at Maryland and a doctorate in athletics administration at Iowa. She was AD at Webster from 1992 to 1994 and has been director of physical education, athletics and intramurals at Notre Dame (Maryland).

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Ian McCaw named athletics director at Northeastern, succeeding Barry Gallup, who resigned as AD to concentrate on his duties as football coach. McCaw has been senior associate AD at Tulane since 1992. He served as co-interim AD at Tulane in 1996 ... Valerie Cushman appointed AD and chair of physical education at Randolp-Macon. Cushman has been associate AD at Vassar for the past seven years.
COACHES
Baseball--Belmont head coach Dave Whitten retired as head coach but will remain at the school as an assistant coach. He compiled a 661-452-5 record in 29 seasons at Belmont. Dave Jarvis, assistant coach at Murray State, was named to succeed Whitten ... Dave Worthley, head coach at Wentworth Institute for the past five seasons, resigned. Worthley led the Leopards to a 75-74 record, including a Commonwealth Coast Conference championship in 1996 ... James King, head coach at Hardin-Simmons, resigned.
Baseball assistant--Mike Coutts, associate head coach for the past 11 seasons at Maine, resigned to open an indoor baseball and softball center in Franklin, Massachusetts.
Men's basketball--Ron Jirsa, associate head coach at Georgia, promoted to head coach. It is the first head coaching job for Jirsa, who was an assistant at Georgia for six years and at Tulsa for four ... Scott Hicks, head coach at Le Moyne for the past five years, named head coach at Albany (New York). Hicks compiled an 87-56 record at Le Moyne ... Tim Miles selected as head coach at Southwest State. Miles was head coach at Mayville State (North Dakota) for the past two seaons and was an assistant at Northern State for six years before that. ... Marty McDermot hired at Lake Superior State after serving as assistant coach there last season. He also has been an assistant coach at Bemidji State and Wayne State (Nebraska).
Men's basketball assistants--Dan Brook, assistant coach at Youngstown State, named head coach at Tiffin. Brook had been with the Penguins since 1990 ... Belmont promoted Casey Alexander to top assistant coach and hired assistant coach Howard Pride, who graduated in May from Vanderbilt, where he was team captain. Alexander, who has been at Belmont for six years, replaces Kevin LeGate, who resigned to become head coach at Davidson Academy ... Jamal Meeks and Brian Zapach hired at Bowling Green. Meeks was an assistant coach at Northwestern for the past three seasons and Zapach was administrative assistant for men's basketball at Southern Mississippi last season. He also has coached at Morehead State and Indiana ... Benjy Taylor promoted from assistant coach to associate coach at Northern Illinois. Taylor has been with the Huskies for three years ... Lake Superior State named Saul Phillips as assistant coach. Phillips was a graduate assistant coach at Wayne State (Nebraska) last season ... Richard Bergin appointed assistant coach at Bryant. Bergin was an assistant at Clark (Massachusetts) last season ... Texas-San Antonio announced the resignations of Kyle Keller and Chris Crutchfield to become men's basketball coach and assistant men's coach, respectively, at Tyler Junior College ... Jeremy Livingston appointed assistant coach at Western Kentucky ... Dwayne Grace named assistant coach at North Carolina-Charlotte.
Women's basketball--Britt King appointed head coach at Coppin State, succeeding Tori Harrison, who was hired as an assistant at Minnesota. King has been head coach and senior woman administrator at District of Columbia for the past five years ... Lake Superior State hired Gwen Wilkie as head coach. Wilkie has been an assistant coach at the school for the past six years. She was a standout member of the women's basketball team at Lake Superior State before joining the coaching ranks.
Women's basketball assistants--Lisa Nuxol named assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Georgia Southern. Nuxol was an assistant coach at Seminole Community College for the past two years ... Connecticut promoted Tonya Cardoza to second assistant coach and hired Jamelle Elliott, former Connecticut star player, to replace Cardoza ... Virginia Tech appointed Joe Mathews and Karen Clayton as assistant coaches.
Women's cross country--Kari Nethery, former assistant coach at Wisconsin-La Crosse, named at Texas Lutheran.
Field hockey--Jan Casey, head coach at Framingham State, resigned. Casey also was head women's softball coach.
Football--Bryan Marmion named at Texas Lutheran. He was defensive coordinator at California Lutheran.
Football assistants--Brian Sherman selected as assistant coach at Bowling Green, where he will coach guards and centers on the offensive line. Sherman was a graduate assistant working with defensive coaches at Bowling Green last season ... Declan Walsh, Chad Martinovich and John Vitullo appointed graduate assistant coaches at Albany (New York). Walsh has been an assistant at King's (Pennsylvania), Martinovich an assistant at Hamilton and Vitullo an assistant at Cornell ... Kennedy Pola appointed running backs coach at Colorado.
Men's ice hockey assistant--Steve Mattson, an assistant coach and head junior varsity coach at St. Michael's for the past four seasons, named director of ice hockey at the school. Mattson will be responsible for administration of the men's and women's programs.
Women's lacrosse assistant--Karen MacCrate hired as assistant coach at Dartmouth.
Men's and women's soccer--Texas Lutheran announced the appointment of two head coaches. Diana Driggers, an assistant at St. Mary's (Texas), was named head women's coach and Mike Alderson, an assistant at Trinity (Texas), was named head men's coach ... Kevin Boyd named head women's coach at California after serving as an assistant coach last season ... Tracy Blasius hired as head women's coach at John Carroll. Blasius was an assistant coach at Vermont until January when she became interim head coach there ... Tim Kaleita named director of soccer at St. Michael's. Kaleita will oversee the men's and women's programs and coach the men's team. He succeeds Les Johnson as head coach. Kaleita has been an assistant coach and interim head coach at Vermont.
Women's soccer assistants--Nicole Barbuto hired as assistant coach at Dartmouth ... Trish Hughes named assistant coach at Auburn.
Women's softball--Nicholls State head coach Lu Harris resigned to become head coach of the Orlando Wahoos of the new Women's Professional Fastpitch League. Under Harris, Nicholls State posted a 90-42-1 record over the past two years ... Pat Conlan, head coach at Fairfield for the past three seasons, named assistant coach at Connecticut. Conlan, a 1993 Connecticut graduate, was an all-American pitcher in college before becoming head coach at Fairfield in 1994 ... Jan Casey, head coach at Framingham State, resigned. Casey also was head field hockey coach.
Men's and women's tennis--Robby Edwards named head coach at St. Andrews. Edwards was the head tennis pro at North Augusta Country Club in Augusta, Georgia, for the past three years. He replaces Jamie Joss, who relinquished his coaching duties after one year to concentrate on his sports information, marketing and promotions, and events coordinator positions ... Peter Smith, head men's coach at Fresno State, selected as head men's coach at Pepperdine. In six seasons, Smith directed the Bulldogs to a 102-56 record ... Peter Lyman, head men's tennis coach at Rochester, resigned.
Women's volleyball--Damon Wilson, who coached Howard Payne to a 37-7 record during the past four years, named head coach at Tarleton State. Wilson succeeds Jim Johnson, who resigned to coach Tarleton State's women's golf program, which begins this fall.
Women's volleyball assistant--Greg Smith, assistant coach at Hofstra for the past two seasons, resigned to join the staff at Ohio State.
STAFF
Facilities manager--Pat Dolan appointed facilities manager for the Harris Courts Physical Education Center at St. Andrews. Dolan joined the St. Andrews staff last season as assistant baseball coach. He will retain his coaching duties.
Football director--Pat Logsdon promoted to director of football operations at Nebraska. She has been with the football staff for 18 years, including the last three as assistant director and 14 as recruiting secretary. She is believed to be the first woman to hold such a position in a Division I-A football program.
Publications director--Kemmeth Rivers hired as director of publications at Ohio. She was publications and promotions coordinator at Marshall for the past five years.
Sports information assistant--Courtney Carey named sports information intern for 1997-98 at Navy.
Assistant athletic trainers--Mike Gross promoted to associate athletic trainer at Houston and Imelda Garcia hired as assistant trainer. Gross replaces Missy Leget, who accepted a position with the WNBA's Houston Comets. Garcia has been a graduate assistant trainer at Texas Tech since 1995 while completing a master's degree.
CONFERENCES
Paul Viglianti appointed associate commissioner for marketing at the Mid-American Conference. Most recently, Viglianti was director of business development for the Michigan K-Wings Hockey Club of the International Hockey League.
Robert Hiegert, former director of athletics at Cal State Northridge, named commissioner of the California Collegiate Athletic Association. He succeeds Tom Morgan, who will retire June 30 after 17 years as commissioner. Hiegert was appointed men's AD at Cal State Northridge in 1978 and was athletics director from 1988 to 1995. He currently is associate professor of kinesiology at the university.
ASSOCIATIONS
The U.S. Olympic Committee has named Nancy Gonsalves as assistant director for games operations and Barbara Emener as manager of games operations in its International Games Preparation Division. Gonsalves joined the USOC in 1991 and served as delegation director for the Paralympic Games and assistant delegation director for other international events. Emener joined the USOC as an intern in 1993 and joined the staff full-time in 1995.

CORRECTIONS
A story in the May 19 issue of The NCAA News about the Division III Women's Tennis Championships did not identify all of the hosts of the championships. The event was hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer.
The name of the new women's tennis coach at Coker was listed incorrectly in the Record section of the May 19 issue of the News. Tina Conley was appointed women's tennis coach.
NOTABLES
C. M. Newton, athletics director at Kentucky, named recipient of the John Bunn Award, presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Newton became AD at his alma mater in 1989.
J. D. Drew of Florida State chosen as 1997 player of the year by Collegiate Baseball. Drew has hit .472 in 61 games, has 28 home runs and 94 runs batted in, and has stolen 30 bases in 40 attempts. His slugging percentage is .981.
Bradley head men's basketball coach Jim Molinari named by USA Basketball to serve as head coach for the 1997 USA Men's World University Games team. Dave Bliss of New Mexico and Ritchie McKay of Portland State were selected as assistant coaches.
The All-American Football Foundation will honor Dee Andros, known as the "Great Pumpkin" during his coaching days at Oregon State, and the late Bruce Bosley at the foundation's Banquet of Champions VII June 16. Bosley was a member of the West Virginia Sugar Bowl team in the early 1950s and a member of the San Francisco 49ers all-time team .... The foundation's Golden Anniversary All-America honorees will be Doak Walker of Southern Methodist, Rod Franz of California and the late Paul Cleary of Southern California ... Five deceased legends will be honored by the foundation as Pioneer All-Americas: Paul Schwegler of Washington, Ernie Nevers of Stanford, Ed "Babe" Horrell of California, Kenny Washington of UCLA and Adm. Thomas Hamilton of Navy ... The foundation's highest award, named in honor of Hamilton, will be presented posthumously to Niles Kinnick of Iowa, the only Heisman Trophy winner to lose his life in World War II ... David Humm of Nebraska will be the foundation's Silver Anniversary All-America honoree.
DEATHS
Albert Harold Poffenroth, former head football coach at Eastern Washington and Central Washington, died May 1 in Spokane, Washington. Poffenroth was 79. He also served as dean of men at Eastern Washington.
Joseph Grassi, head coach of Fairfield's men's tennis team since 1969, died May 14. During Grassi's tenure, the Stags won three Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships -- in 1991, 1994 and 1995. He was president of the New England Intercollegiate Tennis Association in 1987 and 1989. He was a member of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy and the American Philosophical Association.
Nancy Rivera, a junior first baseman on the Lehman softball team, died May 15 of a brain aneurysm. Rivera was 20. She was the starting first baseman on the Lightning team this season and batted .279 with 13 runs scored, 10 runs batted in and a team-high 15 stolen bases.
