III committees include people new to structure
More than 75 persons new to the NCAA committee structure have been appointed to committees by the Division III Management Council and Presidents Council, in keeping with the division's objective of opening up the structure to include more representatives of Division III institutions.
The number of committee positions has nearly doubled as Division III moves to division-specific committees under the new governance structure that takes effect in August.
Of 47 new positions on the division's general and Association-wide committees, 38 have been filled with people new to the NCAA committee structure. Of 44 positions filled on Division III sports committees, 38 were filled with new people.
The number of committee vacancies filled in 1997 is nearly triple that of an average year because of the new committee structure. In the past, the average annual turnover was 33 positions. This year, 91 positions have been filled.
An effort was made to have all Division III conferences represented in the committee structure, and all that submitted nominations are represented. The Division III Presidents Council also wanted to increase representation of independent schools -- those not affiliated with any conference -- and historically black schools, but very few submitted nominations.
Nominations were solicited through The NCAA News beginning in February. Nominations for January 1998 committee vacancies will be solicited in the June 9 issue of the News.
Nominees who were not appointed to a committee were notified and their information will be retained in the division's database for consideration for future vacancies.
Most of the committees will be meeting in the next several months and selecting chairs at that time. The Eligibility and Infractions Committee will divide itself into two subcommittees -- the Elgibility Subcommittee and the Infractions Subcommittee-- and membership of those subcommittees will be determined at the full committee's first meeting.
