Schedule set for I basketball officiating clinics and clinic video conference
The NCAA Basketball Officiating Committee has established dates and sites for the 1997 Division I men's and women's basketball regional officiating clinics and for the 1997 officiating clinic video conference.
The regional clinics will be conducted for all Division I game officials, full-time coaching staff members and supervisors of officials. Specific information was mailed May 16 to all Division I conferences.
The men's clinics will be held at the following sites: Dallas Airport Marriott, October 4; Greensboro (North Carolina) Airport Marriott, October 5; Atlanta Airport Marriott, October 11; Los Angeles Airport Marriott, October 12; Newark (New Jersey) Airport Marriott, October 18; and Chicago O'Hare Airport Marriott, October 19.
Women's clinics will be conducted at the San Francisco Airport Marriott, October 4; St. Louis Airport Marriott, October 5; Atlanta Airport Marriott, October 18; Dallas Airport Marriott, October 19; and Newark (New Jersey) Airport Marriott, October 26.
As in the past, selected Divisions II and III conference officials will be invited to attend the regional clinics. Divisions II and III conferences will receive additional information later this month.
The officiating clinic video conference will be conducted October 22, with the men's clinic beginning at 9 a.m. (Central time) and the women's clinic beginning at 11 a.m. Satellite coordinates for member institutions to downlink the video conference will be provided at a later date.
If an institution's head basketball coach is unable or chooses not to participate in the live video conference, the institution is required to send a full-time basketball coaching staff member to attend one of the regional clinics.
Although the October 22 date is during the approved practice time for the 1997-98 basketball season, it will be permissible for an institution's basketball coach and his or her student-athletes(s) to view the video conference together without including such time as a "countable athletics related activity," as long as the student-athlete(s) does not miss class to view the video conference.
