Western State names wrestling coach

Miles Van Hee, assistant wrestling coach at Western State for the past four years, has been promoted to head coach.

Van Hee succeeds Greg Waggoner, who relinquished his coaching duties to focus more
attention on his responsibilities as athletics
director.

Van Hee was a two-time all-American wrestler for the Mountaineers before graduating in 1993 and joining the Western State wrestling staff.

Waggoner was assistant wrestling coach under Tracy Borah for two years before assuming the head coaching role 12 years ago. He was given the additional duties of athletics director four years ago.

The Mountaineers compiled an 11-2-1 dual meet record last season while winning the Colorado Collegiate and the Rocky Mountain Athletics Conferences titles and finishing sixth in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Ernest McNealey, associate provost and dean of undergraduate academic affairs at Stony Brook, appointed president at Stillman effective July 1 ... Maj. Gen. Tad Oelstrom named superintendent at Air Force. Oelstrom was commander of the Third Air Force at Mildenhall Air Base in Britain ... Chancellor William Tucker of Texas Christian announced his retirement effective in June 1998. Tucker was a member of the NCAA Presidents Commission from 1987 to 1989 ... Mississippi State announced the resignation of President Donald Zacharias effective in December.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Middlebury associate athletics director Russell Reilly promoted to athletics director effective July 1. Reilly, who recently completed his 18th season as head men's basketball coach, will relinquish his coaching duties when he assumes responsibilities as AD. He joined the Middlebury staff in 1977 as assistant men's basketball coach and became head coach a year later. He was named associate AD in 1994.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Mike Gentile named assistant athletics director for compliance at UTEP. Gentile has been director of compliance, eligibility and student services at Buffalo since 1991. UTEP also appointed Barbara Burke as assistant AD/senior woman administrator. Burke has served in the same positions at Marshall since 1994.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS

Texas Tech head women's basketball coach Marsha Sharp relinquished her administrative duties as senior woman administrator to concentrate on coaching. Sharp will retain the dual title of head women's basketball coach and associate athletics director ... Barbara Burke appointed at UTEP, where she will be an assistant AD. Burke has served in the same positions at Marshall since 1994.

COACHES

Baseball assistants--John Nielson and Jim Christensen hired at Carleton. Christensen has been an assistant football coach at the school.

Men's basketball--Metropolitan State appointed Mike Dunlap interim head coach for one year. Dunlap has been head coach of the Adelaide 36ers, a professional team in Australia, for the past three years ... Russell Reilly, head coach at Middlebury since 1978, relinquished his coaching duties to become athletics director at the school. He will become AD in July ... Joey Stiebing, a former assistant coach at New Orleans, hired as head coach at the university. Stiebing, New Orleans' head recruiter for the past three seasons, resigned last month to join the staff at Memphis. Steibing had been an assistant coach at New Orleans for the past seven years ... Ed Conroy appointed head coach at Francis Marion. Conroy has been an assistant coach at Furman for the past three years ... Jay Smith selected as head coach at Central Michigan after serving for the past year as head coach at Grand Valley State. Before that, he was an assistant coach at Kent and Michigan ... John Becker hired at Gallaudet ... Paul Hewitt selected at Siena ... Ernie Kent appointed head coach at his alma mater, Oregon. In six seasons at St. Mary's (California), Kent compiled a 90-80 record ... Murray Arnold selected as head coach at Stetson. Arnold was head coach at Okaloosa-Walton Community College in Niceville, Florida, for the past four years, leading his teams to an 82-41 record ... Bill Lee named head coach at Denison. Lee coached the Big Red on a part-time interim basis this past season, earning North Coast Athletic Conference coach-of-the-year honors.

Men's basketball assistants--Todd Lee and Len Stevens named assistant coaches at UC Irvine. Lee was an assistant for the past three seasons at Cal State Bakersfield and Stevens coached the Neuchatel Basketball Club team in Switzerland for the past two seasons. Stevens was head coach at Nevada from 1987 to 1993 ... Phil Cunningham hired at Georgia State. He was an assistant coach for the past two years at James Madison ... Bill Courtney and Mike Gillian appointed at George Mason. Both Courtney and Gillian were assistants last season at Bowling Green ... Evansville announced the resignation of assistant coach Steve Bennett ... Scott Beeten hired at California ... Paul Biancardi, Davie Spiller and Rick Boyages named assistant coaches at Ohio State.

Women's basketball--Joanne Renn named interim head coach for the 1997-98 academic year at Virginia Wesleyan, replacing Valerie Kepner, who is leaving effective May 31. Renn has been assistant women's basketball coach and head women's tennis coach at Virginia Wesleyan for the past three years ... Bill Vermette, an assistant coach at St. Anselm for 10 years, promoted to head coach. Vermette was interim head coach for the 1996-97 season ... North Carolina-Wilmington announced the resignation of head coach Susan Yow, effective June 30 ... Cheryl Littlejohn, top assistant coach at Alabama, hired as head coach at Minnesota. Littlejohn, a four-year letterwinner at Tennessee from 1983 to 1987, has been on the Alabama staff for the past three years and was at North Carolina State before that ... Jennifer Reimer named head coach at Juniata ... Kathy Sanborn resigned at New Hampshire ... Beth Burns hired at Ohio State. Burns, a member of the Ohio Wesleyan athletics hall of fame, compiled a 151-83 record over the past eight seasons as head coach at San Diego State.

Women's basketball assistants--Alayna Jankunis hired as assistant coach at Marist ... Corbett Grigsby appointed associate coach at Morehead State ... Melissa Pfefferle promoted to top assistant coach at St. Anselm. She also will be head women's softball coach.

Field hockey--Melissa Moran named head coach at Virginia Wesleyan, where she also will be head women's lacrosse coach. Moran becomes a full-time member of the athletics staff at the school, where she coached part time during the 1996-97 academic year.

Football--Ron Taylor, head coach at Quincy, resigned effective May 31. Taylor completed his fourth season at the helm of the Hawk football program in 1996. The team was 1-8 in its first season as a Division II program. During his tenure, the Hawks went 22-15, including seasons of 9-0 in 1993 and 8-1 in 1994 while in Division III ... Ursinus hired Paul Guenther as head coach. At 25 years old, Guenther is believed to be the youngest head football coach among NCAA schools.

Football assistants--Dave Warner and Gary Campbell hired as assistant coaches at Bucknell. Warner, quarterbacks coach at Kansas for the past nine years, will have the same duties at Bucknell. Campbell, an assistant at Johns Hopkins since 1994, will coach wide receivers. Also, Norries Wilson was promoted to offensive coordinator after serving as offensive line coach since 1995 ... Tom Pratt hired at Coast Guard ... Youngstown State appointed Mike Sullivan defensive secondary coach and Mike Priefer tight ends/offensive line coach.

Women's lacrosse--Melissa Moran hired as full-time women's lacrosse coach at Virginia Wesleyan, where she will lead the lacrosse program from club to varsity status. Moran also will be head field hockey coach. She has served in those positions on a part-time basis during 1996-97.

Men's soccer--Bob Long, assistant coach at Wentworth Institute for the past two seasons, promoted to head coach. Long was hired as equipment manager/assistant men's soccer coach at Wentworth in August 1995 and was given duties as head softball coach in September 1996.

Women's soccer--Kyle Hannan resigned as head women's soccer coach effective May 31 to devote full time to his duties as head men's lacrosse coach and sports information director.

Women's softball--Tom Spoleti appointed head coach at Concordia (Illinois) ... Melissa Pfefferle named head coach at St. Anselm. She also will be the top assistant women's basketball coach.

Women's softball assistants--Julie Nelson, Sherri Langfeldt and Lisa Naas hired as assistant coaches at Carleton. Nelson and Langfeldt have coached at the high-school level. Naas is a 1996 Carleton graduate and was a four-year letterwinner and two-time captain for the softball team.

Men's and women's swimming and diving--Chuck Warner, head coach at Cal State Bakersfield since 1993, named head men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Rutgers.

Women's volleyball--Loyola (Illinois) announced the resignation of Therese Boyle-Niegro. She will be replaced by Liz Tortorello.

Women's volleyball assistants--Denise Baez named assistant coach at Cincinnati after a three-year playing career at Arkansas ... Karen Hopkins named assistant coach at Georgia Tech. Hopkins, who was an assistant at Tennessee last season, will coach setters and coordinate the offense.

STAFF

Assistant to the athletics director--Dick Ellis named assistant to the athletics director and to the football coach at Rice.

Sports information director--Syracuse annouced the retirement of Lawrence Kimball.

Strength and conditioning coach--Lou Hernandez, a five-year veteran of the Houston strength program and assistant strength coach for the past three years, named head strength and conditioning coach ... Kenneth White appointed strength and conditioning/cross country coach at St. Bonaventure.

SEMINAR

The 1997 Business of Sports Symposium will focus on "Creating Opportunity Through Education and Networking" when it convenes May 21-24 at the Lake Buena Vista (Florida) Conference Center in the Walt Disney Wide World of Sports complex. NOTABLES

Lynn Dorn, director of athletics at North Dakota State, named recipient of the 1997 Women's Basketball Coaches Association administrator of the year award. Dorn, who is in her 20th year as AD and currently serves as NCAA Division II vice-president, has been a strong force in Division II women's athletics at both the local and national levels.

Tim Duncan, a senior from Wake Forest, honored as the winner of the 21st John R. Wooden Award, which goes to the male basketball player of the year. Duncan was a runaway winner, receiving 4,764 points from voting by nearly 1,000 sportswriters and sportscasters in all 50 states.

Winners of the AT&T Long Distance Awards for the 1996-97 college basketball season are: three-point field goals per game -- men's Division I, William Fourche, Southern-Baton Rouge, 4.5; men's Division II, Reece Gliko, Montana State-Billings, 4.8; men's Division III, Jeff Clement, Grinnell, 5.1; and women's Division I, Brenna Doty, Buffalo, 3.5; three-point field-goal percentage -- men's Division I, Kent McCausland, Iowa, 52.2; men's division II, Adam Harness, Oakland City, 57.4; men's Division III, Andy Strommen, Chicago, 52.7; and women's Division I, Chrissy Roberts, Eastern Kentucky, 48.8. AT&T donates $1,000 in each of the eight categories to the NCAA Degree-Completion Award Program.

Arizona sophomore Marisa Baena and Mississippi State junior Michael Connell named Rolex College Golfers of the Month for March by the College Golf Foundation. Baena won the award for the second time this year and the fourth time in her collegeiate career.

Peter Murray, a sophomore outside hitter/middle blocker for Springfield, named national men's volleyball player of the week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. For the week, Murray had 78 kills, 15 digs, three blocks and a .323 hitting percentage.


DEATHS

Charles "Rut" Walter, Wisconsin track coach from 1961 to 1969, died April 5 at his home in North Palm Beach, Florida. Walter was 91. He led Wisconsin teams to seven Big Ten Conference championships, including three straight indoor titles in 1967, 1968 and 1969. He retired in 1969 and moved to Florida. Walter was Big Ten champion in the 440 for three years while at Northwestern and NCAA champion in 1929.

Gerry Case, a freshman midfielder for the Loyola (Maryland) men's lacrosse program, died March 22 of meningococcal disease. He was 19.
