Beloit hires Youngblood for men's basketball

Beloit has selected Augustana (Illinois) assistant coach Cecil Youngblood as head men's basketball coach.

Youngblood joins Beloit after serving as an assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach at Augustana since 1990.

He fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Beloit coaching legend Bill Knapton, who stepped down after 40 years at the school.

Youngblood will have additional duties as the Buccaneers' head men's and women's golf coach, beginning with the 1998 season.

A 1976 graduate of Augustana, Youngblood was a two-sport letter winner in football and basketball. He was an assistant coach for the Augustana football team from 1980 to 1990, and he also has been strength and conditioning coordinator for all intercollegiate sports at Augustana.


GENERAL

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Mary Pankowski, vice-president for the North Campus and university outreach at Florida International, named interim athletics director. Pankowski, who has announced that she will retire June 30, will oversee the university's athletics department and guide the search for a permanent AD ... Lynn Sheedy, AD at Salve Regina, resigned effective June 30 to return to teaching.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Grace Collins, associate athletics director for finance and administration at Florida International, resigned to become associate AD for business affairs at Cal State Northridge. Collins, who joined Florida International in June 1995, also was senior woman administrator.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Bowling Green appointed Jane Myers assistant athletics director for athletics development, with primary responsibility as Falcon Club director. Myers takes over for Jim Philo, who has been coordinator of Falcon Club activities since last July. Myers has been student-services counselor in the office of admissions at Bowling Green since 1988 ... Florida named three assistant ADs: Colleen Hayes, director of human resources and risk management, promoted to assistant AD for administrative services; Mike Spiegler, coordinator for compliance and special events, to assistant AD for compliance and support services; and Chip Howard, coordinator for operations and facilities, to assistant AD for auxiliary services ... Alan LeForce, assistant AD at East Tennessee State, named head women's basketball coach at Coastal Carolina. LeForce was head women's basketball coach at East Tennessee State from 1990 to 1996.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

COACHES

Baseball--Tom O'Connell, head coach at Princeton since 1982, announced his retirement, effective at the end of the 1997 season. O'Connell spent 10 years at Brandeis before joining the Princeton staff. In 25 years of head coaching, he has compiled a 475-363-11 record ... Mike Florak hired as head baseball coach and sports information director at Waynesburg ... Buena Vista announced the resignation of head coach John Ward.

Men's basketball--Royce Waltman hired at Indiana State, succeeding Sherman Dillard, who resigned to become head coach at James Madison. In five years as head coach at Indianapolis, Waltman compiled an 89-49 record. He also has been head coach at DePauw ... Todd Sturgeon appointed head coach at Indianapolis ... Canisius head coach John Beilein hired at Richmond. Beilein had a 89-62 record in five years at Canisius, including 17-12 this season ... Canisius promoted assistant coach Mike MacDonald to head coach. MacDonald has been at Canisius for nine years, two as a graduate assistant and seven as a full-time assistant coach ... Bowling Green head coach Jim Larranaga selected at George Mason. Larranaga led Bowling Green to a 170-144 record in 10 years as head coach there ... Ohio State appointed Jim O'Brien as head coach. O'Brien has been head coach at Boston College for 11 seasons ... Jerry Green, who took Oregon to the National Invitation Tournament this season, hired at Tennessee. Green, who has been at Oregon for five years, earlier was head coach for nine years at North Carolina-Asheville and an assistant at Kansas for four years.

Idaho announced the resignation of Kermit Davis, who accepted the associate head coaching job at LSU. Davis was head coach at Idaho from 1989 through 1990, when he left to become head coach at Texas A&M. He returned to Idaho for the 1996-97 season after serving for two seasons as associate head coach at Utah State ... Kevin Bannon, head coach at Rider for the past eight seasons, selected as head coach at Rutgers. Bannon's overall coaching record is 276-151, including a seven-year 145-48 mark at College of New Jersey ... Longtime assistant coach Don Harnum promoted to head coach at Rider. Harnum has been on the Rider staff since 1989 ... Ron "Fang" Mitchell, head coach at Coppin State, given a seven-year contract extension.

Men's basketball assistants--Bernie Pearson named assistant coach at Missouri-Kansas City. Pearson spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach at Lamar ... Tim O'Toole and Rob Jackson appointed assistant coaches at Seton Hall, succeeding Greg Herenda and Kenny Williamson ... David Rose and Nathan Call hired at Brigham Young ... Georgia Southern announced the resignation of assistant coach Ken Smith and the appointments of Stu Brown as assistant coach and Archie Grubb as part-time assistant ... Kermit Davis Jr. named assistant coach at LSU, succeeding Johnny Jones, who resigned ... Phil Cunningham selected as assistant coach at Georgia State ... Doug Durham hired at Jacksonville, where his father, Hugh Durham, is head coach. Durham was an assistant coach at Georgia Southern for four years, including a stint as interim head coach. He also was an assistant coach at Georgia under his father ... Brian Gregory and Billy Schmidt appointed assistant coaches at Northwestern.

Women's basketball--Alan LeForce hired at Coastal Carolina. LeForce was head coach at East Tennessee State from 1990 to 1996, compiling an overall record of 108-70. He was assistant athletics director at East Tennessee State during the past year as well as an assistant coach at nearby Tusculum ... Carolyn Peck promoted to head coach at Purdue, succeeding Nell Fortner, who was selected as coach of the USA Basketball Women's National Team. Fortner leaves Purdue after one season, in which she directed the team to a 17-11 record and a share of the conference title. Peck was Fortner's top assistant and recruiting coordinator last season ... Lynn Bria named head coach at Central Florida after serving last season as interim head coach following the death of Jerry Richardson. Bria originally was hired at Central Florida as an assistant coach ... Laura Litter hired as head coach at Morehead State.

Field hockey assistants--Amy Robertson and Michele Meister selected as assistant coaches at Wake Forest. Robertson has been an assistant coach at Massachusetts for the past five years and Meister was a volunteer assistant at Penn State last fall.

Football--Concordia (Illinois) named Rod Olson head coach, succeeding Jim Braun, who headed the team from 1983 to 1996. Olson most recently was offensive coordinator at Tennessee-Martin ... Warren Ruggiero hired as head coach at Glenville, succeeding Rick Rodriguez. Ruggiero was offensive coordinator at Clarion.

Football assistants--Jim Knowles, an assistant coach at Cornell for the past nine years, selected as defensive line coach at Western Michigan. Knowles worked with linebackers and running backs and coordinated recruiting and special-teams efforts at Cornell ... Glenville announced the following appointments: Terry Lantz, an assistant at Virginia Military, named defensive coordinator; Ron Crook, special teams coordinator and offensive line coach at Clarion, given similar duties at Glenville; Jeff Behrman, receivers coach at Clarion, named receivers coach and recruiting coordinator; J. D. Dawson of Valparaiso named defensive line coach; and Kim Neidala selected as defensive secondary coach.

Portland State announced the appointments of Joseph Welch as wide receivers coach, Richard Rodgers as cornerbacks coach, Mark Criner as defensive coordinator and Vic Venuta as assistant head coach ... Tennessee-Martin named these assistants: Jim Abbate as defensive secondary coach; Mike Beagle as defensive coordinator/linebackers coach; Jeff Brookshire as offensive line coach; Matt Griffin as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks and receivers coach; Dave Walkosky as running backs coach/special-teams coordinator; and Jim Rapp as team trainer ... Ed Foley named offensive coordinator and Paul Guenther defensive coordinator at Jacksonville, which also announced the appointment of Mark Fetterman as assistant coach ... Kevin Sherman hired as wide receivers coach and Steed Lobotzke as offensive line coach at Ohio. Sherman was an assistant at Virginia Military for the past four seasons. Lobotzke was a graduate assistant at Air Force in 1992 and 1993 and has been on active duty for the past three years. Ohio also promoted Troy Calhoun from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator.

Eric Jackson, defensive coordinator at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for the past year, hired as defensive backfield coach at Cornell ... Marty Monroe named defensive coordinator and Greg Clough appointed secondary coach at Mankato State ... J. D. Shaw hired as assistant football coach and men's tennis coach at Waynesburg ... Orlando Mitjans Jr. appointed defensive backfield coach at Morgan State ... Tim Davis selected as tight ends and assistant offensive line coach at Wisconsin, succeeding Bernie Wyatt, who became on-campus recruiting coordinator. Davis was a volunteer and graduate assistant at Wisconsin from 1983 to 1986 before becoming assistant coach at Utah. Wyatt has been a member of the Wisconsin staff since 1990 ... Dave Warner and Gary Campbell appointed assistant coaches at Bucknell, which also announced the appointment of Norries Wilson as offensive coordinator.

Men's ice hockey--Bob Gaudet, head coach at Brown for the past nine years, named head coach at Dartmouth. Gaudet came to Brown in 1988 after five years as an assistant coach at Dartmouth, his alma mater ... Frank Bretti hired at Iona, succeeding Bill Conforte, who retired.

Women's softball--Jackie Shimp, head coach at Colorado College for the past two years, resigned effective at the end of the current season. Shimp also was head women's volleyball coach.

Women's tennis--Assistant coach Ronni Reis-Bernstein promoted to head women's tennis coach at Florida International. Reis-Bernstein joined the Florida International staff as an assistant in 1995.

Men's tennis--J. D. Shaw appointed men's tennis coach and assistant football coach at Waynesburg.

Men's and women's track and field assistants--Fairleigh Dickinson appointed three assistant track coaches: Ainsley Armstrong, a two-time Olympian for Trinidad and Tobago, replaces Jerome Pemberton as sprints and hurdles coach; Robert Brady replaces Mike Theuerkauf as weights coach; and Erica Noonan replaces Jennifer McDermott as jumps coach.

Women's volleyball--Sara Martin, head coach at Western Carolina for the past three seasons, announced her resignation effective April 21. Martin compiled a 33-65 record after taking over the Catamount program in 1994 ... Jackie Shimp, head coach at Colorado College for the past two years, resigned. Shimp also was head women's softball coach ... Jim Brinton, head coach at Cal State Chico, resigned effective May 9 to take a sales-management position. Brinton has been the Wildcats' head coach for the past seven years ... Becky Eggering named head coach at Truman State effective July 1. Eggering has been an assistant volleyball coach at Iowa since August 1996 ... Jeannie Henningsen hired at Buena Vista.

Women's volleyball assistant--Denise Baez hired as assistant coach at Cincinnati.

Wrestling--John Hartupee appointed head coach at Duquesne effective July 1. Hartupee served as the Dukes' assistant coach for the past three years.

STAFF

Marketing and promotions director--Mike Hill promoted to director of marketing and promotions at Florida. Hill was coordinator for marketing and promotions.

Sports information director--Mike Florak hired as sports information director and head baseball coach at Waynesburg.

NCAA NATIONAL OFFICE

Dion Gengler hired as a programmer/analyst in the NCAA national office, replacing Danny Roberts. Gengler most recently was a project manager/programmer for 800 Call-KC.

ASSOCIATIONS

USA Basketball announced it is proceeding with plans for a Women's National Team Program and hired a head coach, Nell Fortner, who coached Purdue's women's basketball team to the Big Ten Conference cochampionship this year in her first season. USA Basketball sponsored a 1995-96 National Team to prepare a core of athletes for the 1996 Olympics. Because of the success of that program, which won a gold medal, an ongoing Women's National Team Program is being established. Fortner assisted Tara VanDerveer with the 1996 U.S. National Team and Olympic team. VanDerveer has returned to Stanford to coach its women's basketball team ... Trudi Lacey, assistant women's basketball coach at Maryland, named assistant director for women's programs at USA Basketball. Lacey, who has been involved with USA Basketball as a committee member, coach and player, will assist in the development, coordination and implementation of the USA Basketball women's programs ... Alysiah Bond named director of special programs for USA Basketball. Bond has been an intern at the Big Ten since January 1996.


NOTABLES

Barbara Viera, head women's volleyball coach at Delaware, appointed education and publications chairperson for the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Viera is the author of two books and has had more than 40 articles published. She also has done developmental work on an international level for the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports and Partners of America. The AVCA also announced the re-election of Susie Homan, head women's volleyball coach at George Washington, as AVCA awards chairperson. Homan served as awards chair last year.

Adam Naeve, a 6-10 middle blocker at UCLA, named men's volleyball player of the week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. For the week, Naeve hit .580 and tallied 56 kills, 23 digs and 14 blocks.

Connecticut women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma named 1996-97 Division I national coach of the year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Auriemma directed the 1996-97 Huskies to a 34-0 record before a loss to Tennessee in the final of the Midwest regional. Auriemma also was named Division I women's basketball coach of the year by The Associated Press. It was the second time in three seasons he was selected by AP.

Auriemma's star player, Kara Wolters, was named Division I women's basketball player of the year by AP. It is the third straight season the award has gone to a Connecticut player.

Tim Duncan of Wake Forest, the only unanimous all-American choice this season and the first repeat selection in five years, named college men's basketball player of the year by AP, and Minnesota head coach Clem Haskins, who took Minnesota to its first Final Four berth ever and first Big Ten Conference title since 1982, named men's basketball coach of the year by the AP.


DEATHS

Linda Puckett, former head women's basketball coach at Southeastern Louisiana, died March 19 after a bout with cancer. Puckett was 52. She compiled the best winning percentage in Southeastern Louisiana history with a 175-45 record over seven years for a .795 winning mark. She guided the Lady Lions from the program's inception in 1974 through 1980-81. Puckett's teams had three straight 30-win seasons.

Hawaii football player Shannon Smith drowned March 29 on Kauai, Hawaii, while trying to save his coach's 6-year-old son. Smith was 20. He was a junior place-kicker for the Rainbows.

Robert North, a volunteer assistant men's basketball coach at Hamilton, was found dead April 2 in a ravine near the Indianapolis International Airport. He had been in Indianapolis attending the Final Four and was reported missing April 1. Police said his death appeared to be the result of an accidental fall.
