Douglass takes position at UC Irvine
Pat Douglass, who led Cal State Bakersfield to the NCAA Division II men's basketball title this year, has been named head coach at UC Irvine.
The most victorious coach in Cal State Bakersfield history, Douglass was 257-61 in 10 seasons with the Roadrunners. He led the university to the Division II postseason tournament in each year that he coached.
The Roadrunners won national titles in 1993, 1994 and 1997. His 1992-93 Division II championship team was 33-0.
Douglass was head coach at Montana State-Billings for six seasons before joining the Bakersfield staff. He compiled a six-year mark of 119-57, including a berth in the Division II semifinals during his last season there.
In 16 years as a collegiate head coach, Douglass is 376-118 with 14 Division II tournament appearances, including the last 13 years in a row.
He is a graduate of Pacific (California) with a degree and teaching credentials in physical education and biology.

Lamar athletics director Mike O'Brien hired as associate athletics director for development at Kansas State. O'Brien has been AD at Lamar since 1993. He previously was director of athletics development at Pittsburgh and Ball State ... Bill McGillis named interim AD at Houston, succeeding Bill Carr, who resigned. McGillis, who was interim AD for six months in 1992, has been senior associate AD since 1993 ... Tim Dillon, AD at Alaska Anchorage, promoted to vice-chancellor for university advancement. Dillon is a member of the NCAA Council.
SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR
Cindy Masner selected as senior woman administrator and associate athletics director at Long Beach State.

Bill Husak named senior associate athletics director at Long Beach State, which also announced the selection of Cindy Masner as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator.

COACHES
Men's basketball--Daniel Costigan named head coach at Southern Maine. Costigan had been interim coach since last July. He joined the Southern Maine staff in 1994 as assistant men's basketball coach and was appointed head men's cross country and track coach in 1995 ... Charles Bradley appointed head coach at Loyola Marymount. Bradley has been head coach at Metropolitan State for the past three years ... Cal Poly San Luis Obispo extended the contract of head coach Jeff Schneider through the 2001-02 season. Schneider took over a 1-26 team in April 1995 and led the Mustangs to a 16-14 mark in 1996. The Mustangs had a 14-16 record this season.
Tulsa head coach Steve Robinson given a new seven-year contract through the 2003-04 season. Robinson has coached the Golden Hurricane to a 46-18 record in two seasons ... Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery given a six-year contract extension through the 2002-03 season. Montgomery, 204-128 in 11 seasons, has led the Cardinal to postseason play nine times .... Lefty Driesell hired at Georgia State. Driesell, whose career record is 683-335 in 35 seasons, was dismissed March 5 by James Madison after he announced the 1996-97 season would be his last ... Jimmy Tillette named head coach at Samford ... Steve Alford, head coach at Southwest Missouri State, given a new four-year contract.
Art Perry named at American. He previously was head coach at Delaware State and also has served as an assistant coach at Maryland ... Tic Price resigned at New Orleans to accept the men's basketball head coaching position at Memphis. Price compiled a 63-27 record in three seasons at New Orleans, including a 22-7 mark this year. He replaces Larry Finch, who resigned after three years as head coach ... Ajac Triplett announced his resignation at Morris Brown ... Utah State extended the contract of Larry Eustachy through the 2003-04 season.
Men's basketball assistant--Richard Bacon resigned at Texas Christian.
Women's basketball--UC Irvine did not renew the contract of head coach Colleen Matsuhara. Matsuhara, who coached the Anteaters for six seasons, has an overall record of 59-109 ... Shelia Moorman, head coach at James Madison, resigned to become facilities and events coordinator at the university. Moorman led the Dukes to a 302-134 record in 15 years as head coach ... Quincy head coach Penny Lewis resigned. Lewis compiled a 32-64 record in four seasons ... Lori Hay resigned as head coach at Lenoir-Rhyne. Hay, who graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne in 1992, was named head coach in 1994 and posted a 19-58 record in three seasons ... Sheila Rhodes appointed head coach at Lander. Rhodes has coached at Greenwood (South Carolina) High School for the past 10 years, leading her teams to state championships in 1995 and 1996. She is a Lander alumnus. She also will serve as women's assistant volleyball coach ... Lisa Fitch hired at Wright State, effective July 1.
Women's basketball assistant--Betsy Sloan-Meeks, assistant coach at Missouri-Kansas City, resigned to spend more time with her family. Sloan-Meeks spent one season on the Missouri-Kansas City staff after four seasons as head coach at Johnson County (Kansas) Community College.
Football--Joe Riccio will resign at Randolph-Macon because of health problems, effective at the end of the academic year. Riccio has been head coach at Randolph-Macon since 1991 and a member of the staff since 1987.
Football assistants--Tim Banks appointed defensive secondary coach at Ferris State. Banks has been a graduate assistant at Bowling Green, working with the defensive coaches ... Jay Boulware appointed tight ends coach at Northern Illinois ... Bob Price named running backs coach at Virginia. Price, head coach of the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League last season, succeeds Andre Powell, who became wide receivers coach. Tom Sherman, a member of the Virginia staff since 1982 and wide receivers coach for the past 10 seasons, left his coaching position to assume administrative responsibilities in the Virginia football program ... The following appointments were announced at Morehouse: Todd Bowles, defensive coordinator; Jeff Fuller, assistant defensive coach; John Wilson Montgomery II, offensive coordinator; Heishma Northern, running backs coach; Mike Pitts, defensive line coach; Michael Roach, linebackers coach; and Troy Wilson, receivers coach.
Women's soccer--Ann Clifton named head coach at Villanova, succeeding Shelly Chamberlain. Clifton has tallied a 146-8-6 record at the high-school level since 1989 ... Michael Joy hired as head coach at Tusculum. Joy has spent the past five seasons as head women's soccer coach at Midway. He succeeds John Eiskamp, who resigned ... Angel Schofield, a former all-American player at Springfield, named coach of the new women's soccer program at Wentworth. She has served as assistant coach at Springfield since 1994.
Women's softball assistant--Shepherd assistant football coach Sascha Hyer given additional duties as assistant softball coach.
Men's tennis--Shepherd named former Ram tennis standout Chris Stambaugh head men's tennis coach. Stambaugh won both a singles and doubles championship in 1988 in leading the Rams to the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships.
Women's tennis assistant--Kirstin Smith hired as assistant women's tennis coach at Loyola Marymount. Smith, who has coached at the high-school level for the past two years, succeeds Julie Oshiro, who accepted a full-time position with the Southern California Tennis Association.
Women's volleyball--Dennis Mundy resigned at Roanoke. His record over three years was 40-37 ... Howard Wallace, formerly associate head coach at Hawaii, appointed head coach at Creighton.
Women's volleyball assistant--Heather Collins selected as assistant women's volleyball coach at Loyola Marymount, replacing Erika Stevens, who left to pursue a career in the entertainment field. Collins was an assistant coach at UC Santa Barbara for the past two years ... Sheila Rhodes appointed at Lander, where she also will serve as head women's basketball coach.
STAFF
Executive director--Dede Rossi selected as executive director of the 49ers Athletic Association at Long Beach State.
Facilities and events coordinator--Shelia Moorman named facilities and events coordinator at James Madison. Moorman was head women's basketball coach at the school for the past 15 years.
CONFERENCES
Brad Bankston selected as commissioner of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Bankston joined the conference in 1992 as sports information director and was promoted to assistant to the commissioner in 1994. In 1995, he was named assistant commissioner. He will replace retiring commissioner Dan Wooldridge at the end of the 1996-97 academic year. Wooldridge has been commissioner since 1976.

CORRECTION
La Roche was omitted from a list of members of the new Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference in the NCAA Record section of the March 10 issue of The NCAA News. La Roche is one of six charter members of the newly formed Division III conference.
NOTABLES
Shelly Respecki, assistant women's basketball coach at Clarion, named graduate assistant of the year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Also, North Dakota State center Kasey Morlock was named the Rawlings Division II women's basketball player of the year by the WBCA. Morlock, a 6-1 senior, is the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,233 points ... Ivan Contreras, an opposite hitter for No. 2-ranked Penn State, named men's player of the week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association after leading the Nittany Lions to their fifth tournament title this year. For the week, Contreras hit .378 and tallied 55 kills, 20 digs and 10 blocks. He averaged 6.7 kills, 2.2 digs and 1.1 blocks in nine games played. He is the first student-athlete to earn AVCA player-of-the-week honors three times in a career.
DEATHS
Mike McGlinchey, who coached Salisbury State football and wrestling programs to prominence in the 1980s, died March 24 at his home in Salisbury, Maryland. He was 52. McGlinchey served as Salisbury State's defensive coordinator for 10 years before becoming head football coach in 1982. His record of 44-11-1 in five years as head coach made him the most victorious coach in the school's history. McGlinchey also was head wrestling coach for 10 years, compiling a 113-32-2 record.
Patrick Kyle Gullahorn, a member of the Vanderbilt football team, died March 22 in a fall from the sixth-floor window of a Vanderbilt dormitory. Gullahorn, 19, was a freshman from Hueytown, Alabama.
