Sacred Heart promotes Radulski
Tom Radulski, whose portfolio includes 20 years of collegiate coaching experience, has been appointed head football coach at Sacred Heart.
Radulski joined the Pioneers last year as offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator. He succeeds the program's founding coach, Gary Reho, who has been named operations manager of the university's new William H. Pitt Health and Recreation Center.
Before joining the Sacred Heart staff, Radulski was head coach for three seasons at Massachusetts-Lowell, where he compiled a 5-25 record.
He earned a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in public administration at New Hampshire, where he also was an assistant coach for two seasons. Radulski's coaching experience also includes stints as an assistant at Columbia, Allegheny, Hamilton and Colby.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Bob Mason, AD at Austin the past 28 years, announced his resignation, effective July 1. Mason will continue his 36-year affiliation with the college by retaining his duties as director of special projects in the office of institutional management. He joined the Austin faculty in 1961 as head men's basketball coach and assistant football coach ... Seton Hall associate AD Sue Regan named acting AD, replacing Larry Keating. Keating, who had been AD for 12 years, resigned.
ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Tammy Light named associate AD and senior woman administrator at Providence. Light has been assistant AD for compliance and SWA at Maine since 1994 ... John Thurston resigned as associate AD at Wingate, a position he held for one year after serving as AD for eight years. Thurston also resigned as head men's basketball coach.
ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Mike Bartley appointed assistant AD for academic affairs at Bowling Green. Bartley was an academic coordinator at the school until being named interim assistant AD in September ... Dennis Kalina, an assistant in the sports promotion and marketing department at Indiana the past three years, named assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions at Northwestern State.
COACHES
Men's basketball--Bob Wenzel relieved of his duties as head coach at Rutgers after nine seasons. He compiled a 128-135 record ... Sidney Green, head coach at Long Island-Southampton, resigned. Green compiled a 29-27 record in his two years as head coach ... Albany (New York) announced the retirement of Richard "Doc" Sauers after more than 40 years as head coach, effective June 1. Sauers finishes his career with a 702-330 record in 41 seasons at Albany ... George Blaney released at Seton Hall after leading his team to a 10-18 record this season, including 5-13 in league play. Blaney had just completed his third season at Seton Hall and had a 38-48 overall record. Before joining Seton Hall, Blaney was head coach at Holy Cross for 22 years ... Finis Horne, who launched Lander's men's basketball program in 1968, announced his retirement, effective June 30. He amassed a 491-379 record in 29 years at Lander ... Ohio State released Randy Ayers after his team went 10-17 the last two seasons, including 5-13 in Big Ten Conference play this past season. Ayers was 124-108 in eight years as head coach.
Kevin O'Neill named head coach at Northwestern. O'Neill just completed his third season as head coach at Tennessee, where he had a 36-47 record ... Steve Cleveland of Fresno City College hired as head coach at Brigham Young, succeeding interim coach Tony Ingle. Cleveland was in his seventh season at Fresno City, a junior college where he amassed a 156-76 record ... Clemson associate head coach Larry Shyatt named head coach at Wyoming, succeeding Joby Wright who resigned after four years at the school. Shyatt will begin his duties at Wyoming after Clemson concludes its play in the NCAA postseason tournament ... Wingate announced the resignation of head coach John Thurston after nine years with the program. Thurston also resigned as associate athletics director ... Hugh Durham hired at Jacksonville, replacing interim coach Buster Harvey. Durham, who took Georgia to the 1983 Final Four during 17 years as head coach there, has a career record of 528-311.
Bill Warden, head coach at North Central the past 16 years, retired as head coach but will remain as an assistant coach. Bob Bray, Warden's assistant the past 14 years, named to succeed him as head coach. Warden, a 1955 graduate of the college, joined the staff as head coach for the 1981-82 season. Bray joined the North Central staff one year before Warden became head coach ... Mark Slonaker, head coach at Pensacola Junior College and a former assistant at Georgia, named head coach at Mercer. Slonaker has posted back-to-back 20-win seasons at Pensacola since taking over the program in 1995 ... Tom Crowley, head coach at St. Michael's, resigned after taking his team to a 23-7 record this season, including the regular-season Northeast-10 Conference championship. Crowley was named 1997 Northeast-10 coach of the year. In seven seasons at St. Michael's, he compiled a 106-86 record.
Women's basketball--Ohio State head coach Nancy Darsch released. Darsch, who compiled a 234-125 record in 12 seasons, led her team to a 12-16 record the past season, including 3-13 in conference play ... Linda Hill-MacDonald resigned at Minnesota after seven years as head coach. Hill-MacDonald accumulated a 66-126 record during her tenure, including a 4-24 mark this past season ... Missouri-St. Louis head coach Jim Coen relieved of his coaching duties following a 5-22 record this season. Coen's four-year record at the school was 32-77 ... Assistant coach Leah Magestro named head coach at Lock Haven, succeeding Frank Scarfo, who resigned after 11 seasons. Magestro has been an assistant coach for the Lady Eagles for six seasons ... Middle Tennessee State announced the retirement of head coach Lewis Bivens. Stephany Smith appointed interim coach ... Virginia Tech released head coach Carol Alfano.
Football--Glen Leonard appointed head coach at Delaware Valley, succeeding the late Chris Bockrath. Leonard served as a full-time assistant under Bockrath, most recently as offensive coordinator. Leonard will retain his duties as head track and field coach ... Barry Fagan named head coach at Wayne State (Michigan). Fagan most recently was a high-school coach and was an assistant coach at Ferris State before that ... James Kent Schoolfield appointed at Fort Valley State.
Football assistants--Michael Muschamp selected as running backs and quarterbacks coach at Mars Hill. Muschamp was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at West Alabama the past two years ... Phil Dorn hired as offensive line coach and strength coordinator at California (Pennsylvania). Dorn has been an assistant coach at Butler the past four years ... Eastern Illinois announced three appointments: Chris Wilkerson, a restricted-earnings coach the past two years, named linebackers coach; Ben Norton, assistant at Vanderbilt and LSU, will coach the offensive line; and Chris Green, a former Miami Dolphin and Buffalo Bill, named restricted-earnings coach for the defensive secondary ... James Saxon, who played eight years in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles, hired as running backs coach at Rutgers ... Women's rowing--Charles Huthmaker selected as interim crew coach at Stetson. Huthmaker, a 1992 Stetson graduate, joins the Hatters from Georgia State where he was in his fourth season as head coach of its crew club.
Men's soccer--Adrian Blewitt named head coach at Methodist. Blewitt has been an assistant coach at Lock Haven the past two years.
Women's soccer--Siegfried Nagele hired as head coach at Eckerd. Eckerd is slated to begin varsity play in the fall.
Women's softball assistant--Shane Weaver, assistant softball coach at Lincoln Memorial, named director of purchasing and accounts payable at the school.
Men's and women's swimming and diving--Gary Binfield resigned as head men's swimming coach at Brown after one year. Women's head coach Matt Kredich promoted to the newly created position of director of swimming. As director, Kredich will oversee both the men's and women's swimming programs at Brown.
Women's volleyball assistants--Meg Fitzgerald hired at North Carolina-Charlotte ... Perry Robinson named assistant coach at Troy State. Robinson was assistant women's volleyball coach and head men's volleyball coach at Fort Hays State the past two years.
STAFF
Compliance officer--Joseph D'Antonio Jr. hired as compliance officer at Providence. D'Antonio has been an associate in a Boston law firm since 1990.
Marketing and promotions assistant--Dennis Kalina, an assistant in the sports promotion and marketing department at Indiana the past three years, named assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions at Northwestern State.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS
Conference USA announced it will realign its men's and women's basketball competition into two six-team divisions -- American and National. The American Division will include Cincinnati, DePaul, Louisville, Marquette, North Carolina-Charlotte and Saint Louis. The National Division will be composed of Alabama-Birmingham, Houston, Memphis, South Florida, Southern Mississippi and Tulane. The conference also will move from a 14-game regular season to 16.
Conference USA also announced that Army will join the conference in football and begin competition in 1998. The conference currently has seven football-playing institutions. It is the first football-conference affiliation for Army.
CORRECTION
The affiliation of Division I Management Council member Percy Bates was listed incorrectly in the March 17 issue of The NCAA News. Bates is faculty athletics representative at Michigan.
SEMINAR
The Buffalo Entertainment & Sports Law Society of the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law is presenting a "Spring Symposium on Sports Law in Western New York" March 27 at the Center for Tomorrow on the Amherst Campus at Buffalo. Washington head women's basketball coach June Daugherty selected head coach of the 1997 USA Women's R. William Jones Cup Team by the USA Basketball Women's Coaching Committee. The Jones Cup team, consisting of top collegiate student-athletes, will be selected in August with competition August 16-23 in Taipei, Taiwan.
Ingo Lindemann, a 6-6 outside hitter for Brigham Young, named the men's national player of the week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. For the week, Lindemann hit .462 and tallied 55 kills, 17 digs and 11 blocks.
Florida junior Robert Floyd and LSU junior Laura Moore named Rolex college golfers of the month for February by the College Golf Foundation.
Michele Tolela Myers, president at Denison, assumed chairmanship of the American Council on Education. Myers is a member of the NCAA Presidents Commission.
Finalists for the 10th class of the GTE Academic All-America Hall of Fame have been selected from a group of more than 100 nominees. The four persons finally selected will be inducted May 6. Finalists are GTE Academic All-America Team members who graduated at least 10 years ago. Dan Harris, athletics director at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, selected for the Wisconsin Soccer Hall of Fame. Harris is considered one of the founding fathers of soccer in Wisconsin, having coached at Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Concordia (Wisconsin) before becoming AD at Milwaukee School of Engineering. He also is involved in youth soccer and soccer camps.
DEATHS
West Virginia football player Danny Van Etten died March 9 in a one-car accident in Camden County, Georgia, as he was returning to campus from spring break. Van Etten, a freshman lineman from Jupiter, Florida, was redshirted last season. The university announced it is naming the school's rookie of the year award for Van Etten and that the 1997 football team will wear his initials on their helmets.
