Kenyon women have easy time in taking 14th straight III title

Kenyon coach Jim Steen had forecast a close meet, but his Ladies surged ahead early and were never threatened in capturing their 14th consecutive team title at the Division III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships March 13-15 in Oxford, Ohio.

Kenyon's Kathryn Petrock won three events and swam on three winning relays to help the Ladies extend the longest streak in NCAA women's sports.

Petrock won both the 200- and 400-yard individual medleys, setting meet records in both. Her time of 4:23.30 in the 400 IM clipped more than three seconds off her record set in last year's event, and her time of 2:04.25 bested former teammate Jennifer Carter's 1993 mark by more than one second.

Petrock also won the 200-yard backstroke for the second time, and swam the leadoff leg of Kenyon's record-setting 200- and 400-yard medley relays and anchored the winning 800-yard freestyle relay. The senior finished her career with eight individual titles and 11 relay crowns.

Sophomore Marisha Stawiski won two more events for the Ladies, including a record-setting defense of her 50-yard freestyle title. Stawiski touched the wall in a meet-record 23.52 seconds, topping Carla Ainsworth's mark set in 1996. Stawiski also touched out teammate Katherine Varda in the 100-yard freestyle for her third career victory.

Kenyon compiled 206 points during the first day of the meet, winning five of the six events and setting meet records in two. In all, Kenyon won four of the five relays and eight of the 15 individual events. The 12 event wins were the most since the Ladies won 13 in 1993.

Sarah Buntzman, Amelia Armstrong and Anna Drejer were Kenyon's other champions. Buntzman won the 100-yard butterfly, Armstrong captured the 500-yard freestyle and Drejer won the 200-yard butterfly for her third career victory.

Williams finished second in the team standings for the second time in three years. Erin Anderson was a double winner for the Ephs, capturing both breaststroke events -- one in a record time -- and Jessica Stokes took first in the 200-yard freestyle to become the first Williams winner in an individual freestyle event since 1983.

UC San Diego placed third behind Rebecca Rabe's victory in the 100-yard backstroke. The Tritons finished just 22 points behind Williams. Denison was fourth and Middlebury rounded out the top five behind Heidi George's second consecutive win in the 1,650-yard freestyle.

Two first-time winners were crowned in diving. Diane Maiese of the College of New Jersey won her school's first individual championship by winning the one-meter event, and Williams' Sabrina Oei took the three-meter dive after finishing eighth in the event last year. Principia's Jacquelyn Field placed second in both events.
