Pioneers ride relays and outstanding individual depth to men's crown

Drury took home most of the individual trophies, but Oakland walked away with a fourth consecutive team title at the Division II Men's Swimming and Diving Championships March 12-15 in San Antonio.

Drury won 12 events, but Oakland won three relays and parlayed a big final day of the meet into a team title. The Pioneers, who will compete in Division I next year, have finished either first or second in the team standings in 15 of the last 19 championships.

Oakland's lone individual event winners were Jay Judson in the 200-yard breaststroke, an event he won for the second consecutive year, and Yoav Ritter in the 200-yard butterfly. The Pioneers, however, placed three or more finalists in four events and racked up more than 60 points in three of them.

Oakland's victory margin was 144 points over Drury and 201 over third-place Cal State Bakersfield. Much of that margin was due to the Pioneers' depth in the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke. Oakland placed five finalists in each and picked up 100 points on Drury in both events. Oakland had entered the final day of competition leading by just 29 points but picked up Judson's win and a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay to pull away.

Many of the meet's individual stars belonged to Drury, topped by freshman Peter Domanicky, who dominated the meet with four individual wins. The Slovak Republic native also anchored Drury's two relay wins.

Domanicky swept the two freestyle sprints and added wins in the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly to become the meet's fourth four-event winner in history.

Domanicky's teammate and countryman Miroslav Bobak won all three distance freestyles for the second straight year. Between them, Domanicky and Bobak have captured 10 individual event wins for the Panthers in two years. In addition, David Aniot won the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard breaststroke and now has six career victories.

Drury's other individual winner was Chris Maender, who successfully defended his crown in the 400-yard individual medley. Drury's 12 event wins was the second highest total in the championships' history.

Cal State Bakersfield featured two event winners, Cory Tague in the 200-yard backstroke and Trevor Hoagland in the one-meter dive. Hoagland also finished third in the three-meter event, which was won by Clarion's Ken Bedford. Bedford won the one-meter last year and placed second in the three-meter.

Teammate Andy Ferguson, who won last year's three meter, placed second in both diving events this year.

Clarion, scoring 81 points in the two diving events, took fourth place in the team standings, 86 points ahead of fifth-place UC Davis.
