Drury, Oakland win II swimming

Behind Zuhal, Gadd, Tompkins, Panthers thrash women's field

It didn't take long for Drury to climb the mountain.

In just its third year in Division II, the Panthers swam away with the team title at the Division II Women's Swimming and Diving Championships March 12-15 in San Antonio.

Buoyed by three wins from senior Nida Zuhal and sophomore Viktoria Gadd and two more from junior Christina Tompkins, the Panthers piled up the second highest point total in championships history and cruised to a 200-point win over second-place Oakland.

Oakland, trying to win a sixth title before moving to Division I next year, failed to win a single event but had enough depth to post 490 points and edge third-place North Dakota by 52 points.

For Drury, Gadd dominated the freestyle events, winning the 200-yard race for the second consecutive year and adding wins in the 100- and 500-yard events. Zuhal, a three-time winner last year, captured three more titles this year, including the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard butterfly, in which she set a meet record. Zuhal also was cochampion with Tania Younkin of North Dakota in the 100-yard butterfly. Tompkins successfully defended her crown in the 400-yard individual medley and added a win in the 1,650-yard freestyle.

Gadd's win in the 500-yard freestyle helped Drury post a huge lead after the first day's events. Drury swept the top three spots and scored 75 points in that event alone. Gadd also placed second in the 50-yard freestyle to Jamie Minnich-McDaniel of Ashland, who prevented Gadd from defending her 1996 crown in the sprint.

Drury added two relay wins, taking the 400- and 800-yard freestyle events, with Gadd anchoring both.

Third-place North Dakota rode Younkin's win in the 100-yard butterfly to its highest place finish since 1990. And Clarion, which finished fourth, won three relays, its first since 1988, and picked up another victory from Christina Tillotson in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Claudine Gruver of Kutztown was a double winner, taking the 100-yard backstroke and sharing the 200-yard backstroke crown with West Chester's Diane Burkett.

In diving, Sarah Loquai won St. Cloud State's first individual championship in the one-meter event, and Tina Hoagland of Cal State Bakersfield took first in the three-meter for the second straight year. Hoagland's brother, Trevor, won the men's one-meter this year.
