ODD CHAMPS

Augsburg wins another team title in odd year; Lewandowski grabs second 190-pound crown

Dan Lewandowski repeated as 190-pound champion and led Augsburg to its fourth Division III Wrestling Championships title in this decade March 7-8 at Ohio Northern.

The Auggies, who have won in each odd year during the 1990s, got another individual crown from 118-pound Henry Gerten and ran away from traditional rival and defending team champion Wartburg, 122-80. Gerten defeated Ithaca's John Gemmell for the second straight year in the finals, 7-4.

Two Auggies earned runner-up honors. Jess Bakalyar bowed to most-outstanding-wrestler honoree Aaron Fitt of Lycoming, 10-2, in the 150-pound class final. Justin Hahn fell to Ricky Casarez of Loras, 4-3, in the 158-pound class.

Wartburg claimed two individual championships of its own as Tom Smith repeated at 126 pounds and Dusty Rhodes claimed the 134-pound title. Smith beat Joel O'Brien of St. Thomas (Minnesota) in the finals for the second straight year, but O'Brien, who lost, 13-9, last year, narrowed the gap this season, falling, 3-2.

Paul Elsen of Wheaton (Illinois) successfully defended his championship in the 177-pound class. Brockport State's Ron Vosburg, named most outstanding wrestler last year after winning the 134-pound class, won this year's 142-pound competition.

Heavyweight Perry Miller of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, who was pinned in last year's final, scored a 4-1 win over Manchester's Nick Primozic in this year's championship.
