Hager lifts Utah to second consecutive skiing crown

Utah's Christl Hager became the first woman to win three NCAA giant slalom championships and the Utes claimed their second consecutive National Collegiate Men's and Women's Skiing Championships title March 5-8 at Vermont.

Utah has won nine NCAA championships overall and eight since 1983, when the men's and women's competitions were combined. The Utes trailed Vermont after the first two days, but took a slim lead after the slalom events on day three. Utah finished with 686 points; Vermont finished with 6461/2.

"This is a really great group of athletes who didn't give up after the first two days," Utah coach Pat Miller said. "They knew what they had to do, and they put on some stellar performances in the final two days. They showed a great work ethic."

Vermont coach Chip LaCasse tipped his hat to the victors. "Quite frankly, a better team beat us this week," he said.

Vermont's strongest showing was in the men's giant slalom, where the Catamounts took three of the top five places. Brandon Dyksterhouse claimed the title, followed by teammates Michael Curtis (third) and Derek McClellan (fifth).

But Utah's Hager, who finished a disappointing fifth in last year's women's giant slalom, bested Colorado's Kate Davenport by eight one-hundredths of a second. The senior also finished third in the women's slalom, where teammate Marianne Winge finished second.

Utah also picked up key points in the men's 20-kilometer freestyle cross country race, narrowly missing first place as Rune Kollerud lost to fellow Norwegian Thorodd Bakken of Vermont by less than the length of a ski boot. Kollerud's twin brother, Frode, was fourth. Teammate Kurt Wulff was fifth.

Individually, Alaska Anchorage, which finished fifth overall, won three of the eight races, including both classical cross country races. Frode Lillefjell won the men's 10-kilometer race, unseating defending champion Bakken, who lost for only the third time in his collegiate career. Teammate Doris Hausleitner shocked the women's five-kilometer field. After finishing 18th in the West regionals, Hausleitner won the national championship by 1.3 seconds over Colorado's Anne Tyso. Teammate Izidor Jerman won the men's slalom.

Denver's Roberta Pergher successfully defended her women's slalom title.
